Star Afternoon. Star
I love the Oscars, always have. Haven't seen another thread yet. Posting this for red carpet/fashion/ceremony twaddle. Hopefully some of you will join me later Wine
First show without a host since the Snow White debacle. Disney sued. For those of you interested in that, articles here:
www.lamag.com/longform/snow-job/
and here:
www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/oscars-rob-lowes-snow-white-422225

I think Glenn Close's Oscar is long-deserved. Wouldn't mind seeing Reg win for best supporting. Think Black Panther would be worthy enough for Best Film but not sure it will, it would have got a win in the best popular film until they binned the category. Interested whether the Guardian's doc will win and who wins best short. Is it Amy Adams's year finally? no And will Anita Dobson be watching Adam Lambert and Bryan May performing Bohemian Rhapsody on stage? Wine

I am surprised by that one too.
Best Picture - Green Book

OP posts:
CoachBombay · 25/02/2019 04:15

Hmm can't say Greenbook deserved to win at all to be honest.

BartonHollow · 25/02/2019 04:16

They rewarded a story about racism from the POV of a white man

Instead of a story about racism from the POV of a black man

Fucking Travesty.

Dr Shirley's family have refuted it too and called it a "symphony of lies"

BartonHollow · 25/02/2019 04:18

And that which sounded like booing was quite odd Confused

A damp squib there

CoachBombay · 25/02/2019 04:18

Thing is #sowhiteoscars might no longer be outwardly so white, but like many things the inner cogs are still tarnished.

GarethSouthgatesWaistcoat · 25/02/2019 04:19

Oops! I missed Regina, I didn't have a live stream going at that point Grin

I saw Mahershala go up but missed what he was collecting 😂

I'm not familiar with either of them, I'm well out of the film loop this year! I'll have to watch all these nominated films and the various bits and pieces you've all been discussing on this thread.

Julia Roberts (who I do know Wink) looked pretty good. Unusual to see her in a bright frock Smile

RageAgainstTheVendingMachine · 25/02/2019 04:19

Is there no lifetime achievement? Confused

Many thanks to you all for keeping me company x
Have a great Monday Brew

Oh my word I made it to the end of the ceremony.

I'd like to thank my friends and family, my wonderful cat who provided invaluable (sleeping) encouragement, everyone who posted on this thread - I couldn't have done it without you. Reddit for pointing me in the direction of a shady livestream...and above all the universe and everything in it. And Lady Gaga.

Goodnight!

BartonHollow · 25/02/2019 04:33

Usually an honorary

Oprah won it one time Confused

FrustratedTeddyLamp · 25/02/2019 04:38

Personally of all the nominations i enjoyed Green Book the most and i thought it was the best.

BartonHollow · 25/02/2019 04:44

Define "best" though

Graphista · 25/02/2019 05:24

I've not seen any of the films but I watch as much as I can about them if that makes sense? (Currently housebound so not getting to see latest films) and I'm aware I'm writing this 2 hours into the ceremony but I haven't seen any results yet. Don't have sky either.

So this is purely my very biased feelings on the nominations

Best film:

Roma - I hate Alfonso Cuaron for shafting Tess geritsen over gravity so I absolutely hope this film wins nothing for that reason. It's also been roundly slated on mn and elsewhere as self indulgent wankery focusing on dog shit! So...yea hopefully wins nothing

A star is born - I love gaga and Brad cooper and music based films so this is up my street but i also love la Streisand and Judy garland and those are BIG shoes to fill plus not keen on remakes

Blackkklansman - interesting premise for a film but as a white woman not sure I feel safe commenting. It does remind me of my lovely granda who always on subject of kkk declared them facist cowards hiding behind masks

Green book - I love social history and films based on true stories and I love mahershala Ali who I first saw in a small tv role and he leapt from the screen incredible charisma and force of character while not overacting or making it deliberately all about him, he was just playing a cop in lie to me and even then I was googling him and thinking he was one to watch. I know he's won an Oscar already but I adore him

Vice - meh. I'm interested in politics and social history but films abut politicians rarely work

Black panther - I'm a big fan of marvel comics and films and this stars actually another lie to me actor who again really stood out in a very small part. I then watched him in creed I'd been a huge fan of the rocky films and this really revived them I feel, then around the time I watched creed fruitvale station as it was on tv and I'd been googling Michael b Jordan and this performance had rave reviews. It's a heartbreaking story and he does indeed put in another amazing performance in it. Plus he's bloody funny on chat shows

The favourite - I love Olivia Colman but this isn't my kinda thing at all it's too obvious, too silly on the comedy side. I err more toward the sarcastic, satirical side of things than more towards almost slapstick

Bohemian rhapsody - while I was a wham!/George Michael girl I loved queen and Freddie too and for my generation he was the first big really well known celeb to die of AIDS and I remember how shocking and heartbreaking and unfair that felt. Freddie was an incredible showman. Again I've seen and loved other performances by rami too

Best actor:

Christian bale - can't stand the man, so far up his own arse he can eat his own throat!

Rami - love him, as an actor and he seems a good sort in person too

Bradley cooper - love him, very funny but seems kinda introverted too and seems like a genuine nice guy which is something underrated now

Viggo mortensen - not a fan. Don't rate him as an actor and seems up himself in real life. Think he thinks he's underrated? He's not

Willem Defoe - love him as an actor great baddie

Best actress

Olivia Colman - love her but as I said the film isn't to my taste. I'll be chuffed for her if she wins but not surprised if she doesn't

Glenn close - adore her. Fabulous actress who's out in some incredible performances but I think has been overlooked as she won't suck up to certain people

Lady gaga - love her. Mad as a box of frogs but love her and what I've seen of her acting in this I love too

Melissa McCarthy - loved her since Gilmore girls but not liked everything she's done gross out and slapstick type stuff isn't for me but this film is a whole other ball game and looks right up my street

I don't know the Roma actress and made my feelings clear on the film

Best supporting actor

Mahershala Ali - love him as I said be delighted if he wins!

Richard e grant - love him too and love what I've seen so far of the film and it would be lovely if he wins but I suspect he's pissed off the wrong people (apparently he's brutally honest what he really thinks of certain Hollywood people)

Sam Elliott - love him too, but another one who's apparently rubbed certain people up the wrong way

Sam Rockwell don't know him don't fancy the film

Adam driver - don't like him. Don't like him as an actor hate him as Kylo ren (why'd they cast someone so damn ugly as the child of Harrison ford and Carrie fisher?!) overrated imo

Best supporting actress

Regina King - bloody love her! Seen her in loads and always like her, very funny open lady on chat shows and the film really appeals to me

Amy Adams - generally I love her but I don't like the clips I've seen of her in this and don't fancy the film

Rachel weisz generally love her but don't like the look of the film

Emma stone don't know here never seen her in anything and she comes across very poorly on chat shows, no character

Roma actress no interest in

Best director

Alfonso Cuaron - will be pissed off if he wins

Spike lee - his work is very worthy but I don't find it entertaining or engaging but then it's not aimed at me

Cold War? Not even heard of this one

Yorgos - the favourite - like I say not my cuppa

Adam McKay - not fancying the film not familiar with the director

Just checked winners pleased with all except best director, strongly suspecting bribery & corruption there!

Not checked out the frocks yet either but wtf Is that abomination at 0043?! Who is that? That honestly looks like someone's granny let loose with a sewing machine and 70's curtain fabric that was rejected as too tasteless even for the 70's!! Maya Rudolph - mate with a name like that you REALLY need a better stylist

Rachel weisz dress looks like a maternity dress! Is she pregnant?

Thought gaga looks fantastic but hoped for more original from her, though i guess her dressing classically is a rebellion of sorts

LOVE Kiki lanes look - elegant, glamorous but unusual too

I like the gown-cede think it looks fab

Not loving the yellow and spike lee looks like a demented psychedelic chauffeur!

Love Marie kondos look elegant and pretty

Loved Richard e grants outfit and his dd is stunning!

Linda cardellini wtf! Columbo 70's boudoir housecoat gone very wrong!

Regina King looks effortlessly fabulous

Angela Bassett love it but I'm an 80's girl and that's 80's-tastic

Melissa McCarthy love it! Kinda thing I'd wear

Glenn close - nope! Seen her look much better

Tina fey looks gorgeous

Love Amy poehlers I wore some very similar outfits in the 80's occasionally with piano ties and musical note braces Blush

Amy Adams phwoar! But then I definitely would anyway she's stunning

Alison Janney love it

Olivia Colman - love the colour not sure I like the style, she's actually quite petite and that seems to overwhelm her

Charlize gorgeous as ever

Emma stone - nope!

Tessa Thompson oh no! Looks like a loo roll dolly!! She's a fabulous figure this is not flattering

Laura dern seems to be wearing a 90's bridesmaids dress

J lo - yuk!

Mahershala Ali his wife's dress? What on earth?

WTFIsAGleepglorp · 25/02/2019 10:56

Am I the only one wondering how that creepy little animation about a woman who eats her dumpling baby got the award for best animated short?

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 25/02/2019 11:01

In the 1980s and part of the early 90s I would have stayed up to watch but, in all honesty, I couldn't tell you who is well known now, what films are most popular etc.

Had no idea about Gravity, graphista that sucks

wtf It's a metaphor, init?! Wink With the amount of overbearing MIL threads we get on here, am amazed MN hasn't taken it to their hearts.

Graphista · 25/02/2019 22:37

I'm genuinely and repeatedly shocked people don't know about it and rave about gravity.

When the film first came out and I saw the précis I thought "oh great they turned the book into a film" I googled "Tess geritsen Gravity movie" as I was curious if they'd just bought the rights or she'd done any of the script too as I know she's done screenwriting before too - that's when I got a load of results on the court case.

It was an utter farce how the whole thing was dealt with, it's a very clear case of plagiarism and I'm also appalled and disappointed that screenwriters didn't support her more.

It's also made Sandra bullock and George clooney go WAY down in my estimations - they are BIG powers in Hollywood and absolutely could have made a difference for the good here.

Sorry - big of a rant but as a fan of writers and a published writer myself and wannabe novelist I think it's appalling that writers aren't properly protected from such theft of their hard work.
