Anyone watching the new series?

Also people don’t check. My DH has testicular cancer and didn’t have the classic lump. Something just wasn’t right and thankfully he went to the GP.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 17/01/2019 10:37

I’m also can’t believe there are many women who don’t know the danger signs already. If it’s absolutely necessary to have major illness why not highlight something that’s not so well known? I’m just so tired of breast cancer being used as entertainment.

I don't think breast cancer is being used for entertainment. It's a really effective way of highlighting societal issues. That's why issues like grooming and teenage pregnancy are covered - it generates awareness and provides an opportunity for a conversation.

For people who are already aware of the warning signs and risk factors, it feels like covering old ground, but it could make a massive difference to people who don't know - and research shows that there is still a high percentage of women who say they don't know how to check their breasts or have never been told to, and a fair percentage who say they know they should but never remember.

That said, any issues need to be dealt with sensitively and there's always the chance that it will trigger people who have experience with it. Personally I struggle with stories about homelessness when it seems like a random choice, a somewhat uncomfortable night infront of a shop, or even worse, sofa surfing. But that's because that is very real to me, it's not an issue with the storyline.

mrsrhodgilbert · 17/01/2019 11:00

I very much doubt it will reflect the bone chilling terror that’s comes with a positive diagnosis and all that follows, but it will trigger it again for the thousands of women watching who have that experience. But hey, if it gets people watching...

whatsthestory123 · 17/01/2019 14:47

so should tv step away with these issues,i dont understand what you want them to do

scripts cant be bland it just dosent work and frankly most pm tv has some sort of topic that somebody would be offended/upset by

tv is very powerful and can get messages across to millions in a very short space of time

im really not sure what you think should be done instead

EveLastNight · 17/01/2019 15:02

'breast cancer is by FAR the most common cancer, especially in that age group'

Yes the most common but not the only cancer. It would be interesting if a drama included lung or bowel cancer in females. Breast cancer is of course devastating but many other cancers need more awareness.

mrsrhodgilbert · 17/01/2019 15:32

I would like them to vary things a little. Breast cancer is very easy to write about and so many programmes do it, it’s lazy and not very original. How about doing a little research and focusing on a different form or even a different illness altogether? MS, kidney failure, diabetes all very serious issues if we must have issues. Ovarian cancer is a huge killer and I would say far more difficult to deal with because women report it late, how about a little awareness of that one? Yes I know dramas have to have drama but must it be so repetitive? Maybe it’s less noticeable if you’re not directly affected by it but please believe me. I bet many women who watch Cold Feet are a similar age to the characters, maybe have watched it from the beginning. Many, like me, will have felt their hearts sink a little when they realised what was about to happen to Jenny, here we go again.

whatsthestory123 · 17/01/2019 15:38

agree/ i actually said up thread that maybe show other cancers etc,i cant disagree with that and would still be very relevant to those watching and hopefully show awareness

Delatron · 17/01/2019 16:19

Having had breast cancer I would agree that I would rather see other lesser known cancers covered or different illnesses. Especially as they have already done a cancer storyline with Adam.

However, I’ll wait and see how they deal with it. Will we see Jenny go through months of chemo and all that entails?

SuperSuperSuper · 18/01/2019 14:26

I'm wondering whether Jenny will get an all-clear which will precipitate a mid-life crisis storyline. I've always felt that she settled for Pete, despite loving him dearly.

Adam's story was handled well. I was cringing for him, he totally misread flirty attention from a person who probably relies on tips to pay the rent. Interesting contrast that the son added years to his age in order to impress the same woman.

Love David. Karen too. Great characters, well acted.

Such a good start!

whatsthestory123 · 21/01/2019 18:37

looking forward to tonights but will be watching itv+1 as watching Vogue Spencer and baby at 9

salsamummy · 21/01/2019 21:05

"it's on my list"
"Anywhere near the top?" Grin

sleeplessinsomewhereelse · 21/01/2019 21:11

Oh god. Drama therapy.

LutherLover · 21/01/2019 21:18

Adam’s son is getting grumpier with age

PrincessScarlett · 21/01/2019 21:30

Fay Ripley just made me cry. And she's normally so annoying!

Scifi101 · 21/01/2019 22:41

@PrincessScarlett

I agree about Fay Ripley. I thought her sobbing in the car was very well done.

I thought the episode today was much better than the previous one.

I liked the flashbacks to Rachel too.

sleeplessinsomewhereelse · 21/01/2019 23:24

Yes! Much better

sleeplessinsomewhereelse · 21/01/2019 23:29

Although do we know why Ellie is now a different actress?

forgivenminds · 22/01/2019 08:00

I think the old actress who played Ellie was doing stuff in America so too busy for the role

southeastdweller · 22/01/2019 09:11

The new actress looks more like 25 than 18. And why can’t they cast someone local, or someone who can do a Manc accent?

DonDrapersOldFashioned · 22/01/2019 11:00

Just watching now.

The drama thing is wanktastic.

Jenny is annoying but Pete is so self-righteous it’s untrue. Last series when Jenny was making redundancies as part of her job, he was all ‘caring’s what I do, Jenny’. ODFOD, you sanctimonious twat. Pete is the MN definition of ‘virtue signaller’. So busy looking after a total stranger, he hasn’t noticed that his wife of 20 years isn’t right.

I quite like Jenny, she’s a tough nut. It’s good to see different types of women represented on tv, not just soft and gentle, ‘yes’ women.

I agree re the actress change. Inappropriate, too old. Plus, they were suppposed to be ID twins, weren’t they? Now one of them is older and totally different? They should have just written her out, sent her travelling or away to work or uni or something.

sleeplessinsomewhereelse · 22/01/2019 15:07

Yes why have Ellie in the first episode and not the second Confused just seems really sloppy.

Agree about virtue signalling Pete. I do like the needy Evan storyline though. 'Take notice of me or I'll keep threatening suicide'

EachandEveryone · 22/01/2019 15:57

Ive just realised HN is the same age as me and het she seems so much older. Not getting at her looks as shes stunning but she always seems so much more together and mature in all her roles.

I dont mind rhe breast cancer story line I have three friends the same age all going through it and all having entirely different treatment plans so it will be interesting to see which route they take.

Was the old film genuine film from the first seasin? I did well up.

sleeplessinsomewhereelse · 22/01/2019 20:39

Yes I've definitely seen that video before. It was really nicely done

QueenOfTheAndals · 25/01/2019 12:30

Does anyone feel like the writers are angling for an Adam/Karen hook-up?

EachandEveryone · 25/01/2019 14:02

Yes and no. It’s always been there, hadn’t it?
