Anyone watching?

The ads looked good but I’m a bit bored by the cliched/lazy writing already.

Can someone please, please explain how they made money at the end? Maybe I've missed something but how did they make money out of their stocks dropping?

Cuppaand2biscuits · 13/02/2019 22:49

I also didn't understand how they made money from the stocks dropping? Surely it's the opposite way round.
Set themselves up nicely for series 2, which I won't bother watching. Could have been done over 3 or 4 episodes this, no.need for 6.

PrincessScarlett · 13/02/2019 23:01

Definitely been set up for series 2. Awful ending with them setting up their dodgy cleaning company. They were very lucky to find one company that had no CCTV and bankers that didn't lock their computer screens, that's not how finance/law firms operate.

To be honest, I really didn't care about Sam at all. She's still a thoroughly unlikeable and selfish character.

ConfCall · 13/02/2019 23:06

It was complete nonsense. Unrealistic. Oversimplified. It's a shame, the idea was good.

Great cast though. I think the actress who portrayed the older daughter is going to do well.

GunpowderGelatine · 13/02/2019 23:18

It's really annoyed me the landlord stuff. You can't just turn up for an impromptu inspection, you need to give tenants notice! And you most certainly cannot boot someone out with 2 days notice. Landlords need to give at least 8 weeks and it doesn't matter if there's no deposit or tenancy agreement when the tenant has been living there and can prove it. Also she shouldn't have ignored her tenants calls, what if there was an emergency?! Can you tell I'm a landlord Grin

Murinae · 13/02/2019 23:21

How come if the girl invested £6000 from her van she only got £2000 to invest in the business and Sam got £14000 to pay off the guy?

GunpowderGelatine · 13/02/2019 23:27

Good point Murinae, IRL Sam would have no friends!

Islathepaella · 13/02/2019 23:34

How come if the girl invested £6000 from her van she only got £2000 to invest in the business and Sam got £14000 to pay off the guy?

I’ve litetally just finished it and thought the exact same thing! They got £16k from Jess’s investment and yet Sam didn’t even ask her it was “I know what I need to do with this £14k” Hmm

I’m really disappointed as someone else has said the potential was there but it’s been far too unrealistic. Where was the twist Sad

Lovingbenidorm · 14/02/2019 01:11

I really enjoyed this😁
I think Sheridan Smith is a stonking actress.
It’s like Mr Toad, despite the fact that he’s deeply flawed, we like him.
SS did this with the Sam character
I’m delighted she came out on top (though not a very good message to those with a gambling problem) 😳

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 14/02/2019 08:51

Best bit for me to watch ?

I think it was when she actually went into the newsagent and she FINALLY turned away from the temptation of the scratch cards . The smiles between her and the shop lady said it all .
As others said, I see this opening up a 2nd series . I don't know if I will watch.

VanGoghsDog · 14/02/2019 09:00

In my job I used to take about ten of those "we're a fabulous new cleaning company....." calls a day at some places and they never got further than that, no way would she have been on the phone that long on a cold call.

Cleaning is very low margin, very hard work, small companies can make money but not loads and with just three people they're not going to get very far.

Re the money - they didn't buy the shares, they bet on the shares falling, they 'shorted' then, knowing they would drop, then you win the 'bet' when they do. But even that was unrealistic. Plus, any large 'bet' placed the day before something like that would trigger an investigation (though I suppose £6k isn't 'big').

I loved the twist that the HR person was FCA (and is now after Sam), I'm in HR and can only dream that I could be an under cover FCA (and the only reason Sam could keep the money and could do the 'short' was due to her - Sam wouldn't have been able to do any of that on her own - series 2, FCA woman 'turns'!)

southeastdweller · 14/02/2019 09:20

I felt insulted after watching that final episode with the stupid fairytale ending. ITV drama's tend to be 'dumbed down' which is fine for escapism but the last episode in this series was ridiculous. I don't like the fact that Sam came out on top. Crime should never pay.

Romcomjunkie · 14/02/2019 09:27

Yes murinae, poor Jess didn’t get a lot for her 6k investment - a third share in a dodgy cleaning business. And the lodger didn’t get paid back either. That Sam is just a selfish cow!

LightAsTheBreeze · 14/02/2019 09:29

I enjoyed it, it was a very ridiculous in parts but then so was stuff like Dr Foster which I also enjoyed, I shall watch the obviously planned series 2

PrincessScarlett · 14/02/2019 09:31

I love stuff SS has been in before but this role as Sam has really turned me off her and I won't be watching a second series.

The80sweregreat · 14/02/2019 11:42

I wasn't paying much attention at the end but she seemed to get out of the scrapes without much violence and threw her poor lodger under the bus ( so to speak)
I was baffled by it all really , but a lot of that was my own fault for not really caring I guess!
I bet there's another series. I might not bother to watch it though.

purpleme12 · 14/02/2019 11:55

I gave up with it anyway I just didn't care about any of them

MinniesAndMickeysNeedCounting · 14/02/2019 11:59

I think the reason Jess was supposed not to mind Sam taking the 14k from her van sale was because she originally had something like £500 which increased because of Sam's investment info, so she was still up iyswim.

I think Sam's a terrible friend and surely anyone with any self respect would drop her.

I didn't like how they ended it, bizarre.
I thought with a topic like gambling they would have to show things not work out for her.

oreoxoreo · 14/02/2019 13:09

I enjoyed watching, that's not to say that the plot was totally ridiculous. Setting up a dodgy cleaning business whilst everyone else was sent under the bus? Is that the outcome we were looking for? No karma, no putting things right? Disappointing!

I think SS did very well as an actress but her character was so terrible, I could not hate her enough for all the people she gambled with!

GunpowderGelatine · 14/02/2019 13:18

It annoyed me too that she paid back the loan shark and not her lodger. Especially when the loan shark randomly added £2k on to her bill! She should have gone to the police because IRL what a loan shark would do is come back a week later and demand more money.

GunpowderGelatine · 14/02/2019 13:19

My heart broke for her though when her arsehole husband asked her for a divorce.

Fairylea · 14/02/2019 14:35

I really enjoyed this! I don’t want a second season though. I think it was quite interesting in that the main character was so unlikeable and yet charming at the same time. I think it showed the whole gambling thing really well.

motheroreily · 14/02/2019 19:11

I totally missed Frances was undercover FCA. I thought she was an insider trader and jist dropped the others in it. So she wasn't dodgy at all? I didn't like sam at all. I know it's bad but I wanted her to get caught and I sympathized with her husband Blush

VanGoghsDog · 14/02/2019 20:31

Francis wasn't dodgy, no. |She was pretending to be dodgy.

I thought the husband was long-suffering and fairly reasonable really.

motheroreily · 14/02/2019 21:50

Wow that's really clever. I wouldnt expect an undercover FCA person to be the compliance officer. So she properly snoop and it would look like she was just doing her job.
