Starts tonight, anyone else ridiculously excited about it? Just finishing up rewatching to the end of season 3 now and can't wait.

Yes lego, Sharon Horgan has said that’s the end, they aren’t writing any more.

IcedPurple · 13/02/2019 18:32

As I recall, Horgan said it was the end... for now.

The last scene was sufficiently ambiguous to possibly set up a sequel somewhere down the road: "Rob and Shazza: The American Years."

billydilly · 13/02/2019 18:42

Loved that Arcade Fire song at the end.

Greenglassteacup · 13/02/2019 18:43

I’m waiting for season 2 of fleabag now

feedingfrenzyatfive · 13/02/2019 19:54

I hadn't realised that Boston was in Whitstable/Tankerton! I'd recognise 'The Street' - a shingle bank anywhere.

calpop · 13/02/2019 19:59

Love that song to, The Suburbs I think its called.

No responsible parent would do that

feedingfrenzyatfive · 13/02/2019 20:13

Well, that was a depressing no laughs ending. I agree with PPs about the kids being left in the car. Pfft.

mizu · 13/02/2019 20:21

Just watched. I liked it. Didn't think anything too upsetting at the end. I suppose it was a bit up in the air but I like to think they swam back to shore.

I've enjoyed this series too, they are both very watchable and as for the meaness, I think they just say what a lot of us think but don't actually say Grin

ItsHardToExplain · 13/02/2019 20:59

They can’t drown and the kids are cooked alive just after her dad and his mum died . . . Can they?
It’s a comedy Confused

Lottapianos · 13/02/2019 21:16

'It's classic Mumsnet to focus on that aspect of the ending. Will nobody think of the children grin'

Glad I'm not the only one who was eye rolling at all the panic!

LivLemler · 13/02/2019 21:29

I'm amazed there's ambiguity, I thought it was clear they died. Also, Sharon didn't see the sign, but Rob did. It was a fucking murder-suicide!

Calloway · 13/02/2019 21:32

If in 3 years time they appear for a Comic Relief reunion sketch we'll know they're fine!

LoisWilkerson1 · 13/02/2019 22:07

Ah I'm going to miss this show. Not the best season but still better than most of the crap on tv. Loved Mia's email Grin

BitOfFun · 13/02/2019 22:41

It just broke my heart to see him follow her in so she wouldn't die alone. I can't stop thinking about it.

Encyclo · 13/02/2019 22:55

I’m amazed that people think they all died. It’s a metaphor innit? Rob wading in after Sharon despite the dangers. The two of them trying to stay afloat together. Dark and unsentimental but lovely all the same.

ElspethFlashman · 13/02/2019 23:46

Oh I thought it was a clear, if clunky, metaphor. Oh look rip tides ahead = marriage. Going too far from shore = marriage. "Didn't want to see you floundering all alone" = marriage.

Basically, they have a 3rd baby and move to Boston and take care of the sister and the dying Dad. Sharon understandably hates it and continues to be low-level vile. Rob becomes a bit Republican. The End.

Lottapianos · 14/02/2019 08:14

I don't get the death theory either. I thought it was a very appropriate metaphor for long term relationships - facing possible danger, risk, no idea what's ahead but choosing to face it together

LoisWilkerson1 · 14/02/2019 08:49

Rob becomes a bit Republican. The End
Shock Take that back!

Grin

I hope their not dead. I thought metaphor too.

LoisWilkerson1 · 14/02/2019 08:50

They're not dead.

Princecharlesfirstwife · 14/02/2019 09:21

I don’t get those who think they’ve been cheated out of a ‘proper ending’. It was quite clearly meant to mean that life/marriage is a struggle but that they’d try to get through it together. I mean their marriage was never perfect was it? I know this series wasn’t as ‘funny’ as previous ones but I think that often happens as the characters develop and you get to know them on a deeper level - which makes it all the more interesting. I loved it. I loved them. I thought it was a great ending - ‘happily ever after’ is a cop out and lazy writing.

dogsdinnerlady · 14/02/2019 10:04

Totally agree the ending was intended as a metaphor - all the water-based images you can imagine. In at the deep end, in deep water, all at sea, out of their depth, sink or swim, sunk without trace, lost at sea, shipwrecked. That's them.

Cel982 · 14/02/2019 10:08

It just broke my heart to see him follow her in so she wouldn't die alone. I can't stop thinking about it.

I really don't think that's what happened Smile I agree that it was meant as a hopeful ending, I just think they got the balance wrong a bit and went slightly too heavy on the 'portents of doom' shots. Don't worry, they made it back to shore.

ElspethFlashman · 14/02/2019 10:08

The move was also foreshadowed by Sharon realising she would have to change jobs because of Creepy Principal. So that set up a move nicely so we're not left thinking but what about Sharon's career?

trancepants · 14/02/2019 13:32

Also, Sharon didn't see the sign, but Rob did. It was a fucking murder-suicide!

Wow, that's the absolute darkest interpretation possible. I assumed he wanted to get out to Sharon and get her to come back in without panicking her. I did also think that Sharon might have been less likely to go out to him, risking the children, if it was the other way around and that possibly is because Rob has the more nihilistic streak of the two of them. But it is odd that he recognised how dangerous the beach was and still took time to kiss her and then mess about laughing, instead of telling her to get back in asap and be prepared to swim to the side rather than against the current if caught.

I think it is ambiguous as to whether they get out or not. At the end, they were still swimming in the direction of the shore but not getting anywhere, which could have implied that they were caught in a rip current. The cinematography choices definitely pointed to them being lost at sea as the last shot from land was of their clothes as they faded to a blur of water. They both seemed to be moderately strong swimmers, so they could survive a rip current. My dad was caught in one once and he made himself not panic and swim to the side, out of the current and he was fine. Sort of terrified but fine. But Rob not telling Sharon of the danger makes her less likely to have the presence of mind to swim sideways.

If they did both drown, both kids wouldn't necessarily die. Frankie is old enough to get himself out of the car and eventually have someone help him. Muireann is probably doomed unfortunately as Frankie wouldn't understand the danger and wouldn't try to move her unless she cried and she's more likely to be in the deeper sleep from the heat so wouldn't.

If Sharon and Rob get out of the sea, I don't think she should move to the US with him. There is no way I'd willingly move my children abroad with a man who had threatened to take them without me. If/when they inevitably divorce in the US her options would be severely limited. And even worse, Rob is an alcoholic with a history of relapse and rewriting history (he relapsed before Sharon and the student, not because of it as he keeps claiming). I've known too many parents to be trapped in the country their children reside in, to ever be willing to move my dc anywhere that I wasn't 100% sure I could happily live forever. I might forgive Rob for his horrible outburst after the funeral, and I might be willing to give him a chance to stay sober. But I'd only ever do that where I had as many options as possible to keep as many freedoms as I could to protect me and my dc in the event of a break up.

Blondeshavemorefun · 14/02/2019 15:07

Wow. His outburst was a bit unexpected

Her being preg. Really? Don’t they learn 🙄

And driving to the beach and swimming with riptides m
