Surprised there's no thread on this. Did anyone watch it last night or has the series reached its natural end and is no longer attracting viewers?

OP posts:
ineedaholidaynow · 03/03/2019 22:49

I thought that too Clawdy

Girliefriendlikescake · 03/03/2019 22:59

I think nurse crane was relieved, I don't think relationships are for her she is too dedicated to the job.

AppleKatie · 03/03/2019 23:12

Not enough nurse crane in this series. Let’s hope she gets something proper to do next year.

LoisWilkerson1 · 03/03/2019 23:27

Was that 90's cad Darren Day playing the German dad? Shock It's still a good show even if it does seem a bit predictable. Will we have a scrap over Sergeant Wolf? Grin

Binglebong · 04/03/2019 00:21

Nurse Crane did have a brief romance with someone from her Spanish class. Think he was married or similar - can't really remember but she's not opposed on principle. Just wasn't interested in the copper and relieved that she didnt have to hurt him to get him to lay off.

user1457017537 · 04/03/2019 02:50

I have really warmed to the doctor’s secretary/receptionist in the last episodes. I thought she was going to be an old dragon at first!

Groovee · 04/03/2019 06:04

@LoisWilkerson1 nooooooo some bloke called Nick Waring

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 04/03/2019 07:08

Yes, I thought that Nurse Crane was going to have a romance with the doctor's secretary/receptionist but obviously not.

Not really a surprise that May came back to the Turners.

Very sad about the poor girl with Hodgkin's Lymphoma.

The more senior of the two new to CTM nuns is rather like Sister Monica Joan, don't you think?

Perhaps we should start to take bets as to what gynae/obs breakthroughs and issues will feature in the next series?

SoupDragon · 04/03/2019 07:25

I thought Nurse Crane's smile was rather wistful

I did too. I couldnt really decide what her smile meant. I thought she was warming to him but she also had a little smile when he appeared to notice the secretary. I think maybe she would like the company of a relationship but not with Seargeant Woolfe.

SoupDragon · 04/03/2019 07:27

I think the man fromSpanish class was married but his wife had dementia or something so wasn't really "there" IYSWIM.

glamorousgrandmother · 04/03/2019 07:33

I think Nurse Crane was relieved, the Sergeant wasn't floating her boat.

Did someone say three more series planned? The last one would have to be closing down Nonnatus House, at least as far as midwifery was concerned, due to the Pill. In one of the books it gave the data for the drastic fall in the birth rate after the Pill was introduced, I don't have it to hand and I'm rushing off now but it was incredible.

Bittermints · 04/03/2019 07:50

I think she wanted to whoop and punch the air at the prospect of getting shot of the Sergeant's unwanted attentions but was sitting on her hands instead. More Nurse Crane next season, please!

Bets for next series: have they ever done gestational diabetes?

It will be 1965 so they should be moving towards David Steel's private member's bill to legalise abortion (eventually taken over by the government and made law in 1967). Came into effect on 27/04/68 according to Wikipedia.

Also, we're motoring towards the summer of love. More mention of drugs, promiscuity, generation gap? Hippies must be on the horizon. We should see men's hair getting a bit longer and maybe less backcombing for the women and more sharp, geometrical cuts with dead straight hair, like Twiggy. Hemlines rising towards miniskirt levels.

Bittermints · 04/03/2019 07:51

Oh, and by the way, don't know if there are any other Archers fans here but one of the barristers at the Old Bailey was Rob Titchener, Helen's ex. Recognised his voice immediately, still makes me shudder.

GrumpySausage · 04/03/2019 07:58

Did anyone notice the stand in for Timothy? I read somewhere that he was filming whilst doing exams and so assume he hadn't been available for his scenes.

First appears at the beginning when Sheila is cooking eggs in the kitchen but we just see the back of him and it clearly isn't Tim. Then later at the Dance of Hope (?) he's on the Turners table but it's again a different lad sat with his hand covering his face. It would have been easier to just not include him! All I was looking at was this lad clearly trying to hide his face!

Clawdy · 04/03/2019 08:06

The clothes and hairstyles all look more late 1950s to me. By 1965, it was mini dresses, and long straight hair. That scene with Trixie and the hair in rollers looked wrong.

GrumpySausage · 04/03/2019 08:08

I wasn't impressed with any of the midwifes ball gown. It's like they couldn't decide what era they want to be.

user1457017537 · 04/03/2019 08:12

The ballgowns all looked quite professional as well considering they ran them up themselves at the convent.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 04/03/2019 08:28

I think young women's sewing skills were generally very good in the 50s/60s. DM ran up her own wedding dress. And FWIW, I had a friend at university who regularly ran up her own ballgowns!

TinklyLittleLaugh · 04/03/2019 08:37

Has Tricia given u on dating and love? I so want her to get back with Tom.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 04/03/2019 08:37

Trixie.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 04/03/2019 08:39

No love interest for Trixie at all this series. Yes, I was wondering whether Tom will return (no vicar present for this series) and they will make a go of it second time around. Think she has become more caring with time.

SoupDragon · 04/03/2019 08:48

I agree about general sewing skills in the 60s. Both my parents could sew really well and they are the same generation as the midwives.

BikeRunSki · 04/03/2019 09:04

I was googling to find out when Nonnatus House closed ie: how many more series they can squeeze out!! I didn’t find out that information, but I did find this article on the RCM website about the real MWs and their stories.

Midwife memories

drspouse · 04/03/2019 09:06

My DM ran up her own wedding dress in 1965 - it was pique, A line. Bridesmaids in mini dresses. So not at all what they are wearing in this series.

ppeatfruit · 04/03/2019 09:25

Bitter I knew I recognised a horrible voice in the court scene, but I couldn't place it!!
