Surprised there's no thread on this. Did anyone watch it last night or has the series reached its natural end and is no longer attracting viewers?

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 18/02/2019 10:38

what has a boil on the bum got to do with being an abortionist!?

Like I said, it's an infection.

SoupDragon · 18/02/2019 10:39

If, say, she got pus on her hands from a previous one and transferred the bacteria to instruments for example.

HemlockStarglimmer · 18/02/2019 10:41

I didn't make a connection between boils and abortionists either. I had a couple of doozies when I was a child. Luckily not on my bum! Have a scar from one of them.

Girliefriendlikescake · 18/02/2019 10:49

Sister Monica Joan can't die!!! The series would not be the same without her Sad

I've missed Patsy and Delia so hope they come back, still find it strange how Cynthia and Chummy are never even mentioned.

I don't think Val's gran is the abortionist, agree that Val would know if something was going on.

Yy to Timmy joining a commune or running off to join the circus, I think he is getting more and more frustrated but his sickly sweet parents.

Poor little May getting passed around like a new toy, she is going to have attachment issues for life.

I think the storyline writers take issue with marrying the main characters off as in reality that would have been the end of the midwifery career, afaik most married women gave up work and had babies up until fairly recently really.

Glamorous I was asked by a patient (i'm a nurse) if I intended to keep my baby when I was pregnant and single, when I said 'yes i did want to keep my baby' she was very snotty and said 'well I suppose thats what girls do these days' Shock this was in 2006!!!

SoupDragon · 18/02/2019 10:50

The connection is more between the boils/pus and the infections that killed the women. That plus the theorising on the thread about a family connection between Val and the abortionist. Little things that make no sense for a story point of view - why show all the money in the oven and why the graphic depiction of the boil for example? Neither make sense, nor does introducing her grandmother out of the blue.

ToKnowAnything · 18/02/2019 10:51

My gran is nearly ninety and like Val's Gran still gives us grandchildren pocket money. My gran will say 'go upstairs and get yourself £20' or 'go upstairs to bring down my money's which is kept in an old purse. Ive also thought while seeing grand stash of nearly a grand (sometimes more if she's not been to the bank for a while) that maybe not all of my cousin's would be as trustworthy just to take £20. From that scene I saw Val being honest and respectful enough not to count the money etc. She took the bare minimum.

It's not as my gran doesn't believe in banks but with the post office 100m away and her bank in a different town it's easier for her to keep her pension at home unless she has a big bill to pay which one of us has to go deposit some money.

Toddlerteaplease · 18/02/2019 11:25

I bet nurse Crane was the wards nightmare patient!

iklboo · 18/02/2019 13:29

I had a dream the other night I was a Victorian detective searching for a Lord's missing son. The Lord was the sergeant from CTM. Grin

RedForShort · 18/02/2019 13:42

It'd be a really plot twist if the sergeant turns out to be a Lord!!

Val's gran I thought we were just wrong about the abortion, but it is that she'll lose it somehow (fire) and then be homeless and penniless.

Blobby10 · 18/02/2019 13:50

Had to google the cast list for last night as was sure I recognised the Union Rep from the docks - it was Mark Wingett - ex Jim Carver from The Bill!!!

Dragonlight · 18/02/2019 18:40

The Bill meets CTM! I loved Jim.

CocoLoco87 · 18/02/2019 18:55

Well blow me down I never recognised him!

diddl · 18/02/2019 19:25

Mrs Pilkington was Cully Barnaby!!

Bittermints · 18/02/2019 19:32

Really? Gosh, so her acting career really did never come to anything then. Grin I always thought Joyce and Cully were smug. They'd knock Dr Turner and Sheilagh into a cocked hat!

ConfCall · 18/02/2019 20:11

I always think of Cully as being about 19! Wow. Would never have noticed that it was her.

Polarbearflavour · 18/02/2019 20:24

NewModelArmyMayhem18 - from memory, the sisters moved to Birmingham in 1976 and continued practicing midwifery until 1990.

They then turned their attention to people with HIV and the homeless. Jennifer Worth wrote a rather nice line in “Farewell to the East End” which was something like the sisters felt their work in the East End was completed and God was calling them to a new challenge.

Phylis in hospital - can you imagine being in hospital in traction now sigh sciatica?!

Polarbearflavour · 18/02/2019 20:43

Also, I’m so glad we have Health and Safety laws these day to help prevent work related deaths.

diddl · 18/02/2019 22:03

Was anyone else hoping to see Miriam Margolyes ride a bike?

MissEliza · 18/02/2019 22:51

I was quite bemused to see Sister Mildred me surprised that the dockers supplied their own clothes. My ds is working on a gao year on a building site and we've supplied all his gear including high viz hoodies and steel cap boots. Should the employers be doing that?

BrieAndChilli · 19/02/2019 00:10

I have to admit I was in tears watching last nights episode with little may and Sheila was going on about her being passed from puller to post and not being able to be sure she won’t be taken away again.
I was put into care age 5 and then adopted by another family when I was 7. It’s definitely had a huge impact on me and I have huge issues with abandonment.

MissEliza under UK Law (The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations, 2015), ut is the employer’s duty to supply appropriate and suitable Personal Protective Equipment.

Toddlerteaplease · 19/02/2019 08:07

We had a five year old at work who has had 7 different homes. Hope the Turners will keep May.

drspouse · 19/02/2019 08:11

I noticed they also talked about seeing faces like yours in this episode (as they did in the previous episode about May).

Blobby10 · 19/02/2019 09:51

I did chuckle when MM character was in the house apologising for being rude - she looked so short and squat!! I googled and she is over 5ft tall but looked about 3ft tall in that particular shot Grin
