Surprised there's no thread on this. Did anyone watch it last night or has the series reached its natural end and is no longer attracting viewers?

That looked like a pretty big nest egg for a woman living in grotty council housing that was about to be demolished. Most of those residents were living hand-to-mouth, not keeping wads of cash in the kitchen.

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 18/02/2019 00:17

She is also Cora in EastEnders

The smugness from Dr and Mrs Turner was very syrup like tonight .

Soubriquet · 18/02/2019 07:26

I did cry at the end there when Mr Brittall died

Such a poignant scene

glamorousgrandmother · 18/02/2019 07:28

Good point about the source of the wad of money in the oven.

I gave birth as a single mother in 1980. When I went into labour I was asked if I intended to keep the baby although it wasn't that unusual then.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 18/02/2019 08:19

I thought that about the money in the oven BUT shouldn't Val have expressed surprise that she had so much if it was unusual?

HoraceCope · 18/02/2019 08:21

Was it the doctor's secretary who took on the single mother?

HoraceCope · 18/02/2019 08:22

A girl i went to school with had a baby in about 1980 and had it adopted, i thought it was pretty unusual then.

Saucery · 18/02/2019 08:26

Val did hesitate when she saw the money, but as it seems she doesn’t visit her Gran very often, perhaps she didn’t want to raise it and cause any bad feeling. I think there may have been some trouble in the past and that’s why she doesn’t visit?
Maybe Gran was an abortionist but Val doesn’t want to think she still does it. Or face the fact lots more women are being harmed by Gran now.

Clawdy · 18/02/2019 08:28

But if the cash in the oven is suspicious, why did the gran ask Val to get it from there? Surely she would have just taken some out, and not let her see how much was there?

Sweepingcalamity · 18/02/2019 08:31

So agree about the saccharine Turners! The doctor used to be a decent (well reasonably decent) actor in the early years, what on earth has happened to him? I reckon he's been emasculated by over consumption of Ovaltine or something?

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 18/02/2019 08:32

TBQH I was expecting to see abortion instruments in the oven.

Remember that in those days there were £1 notes so the bundle could have looked a lot but not been more than about £15-£20 (cross referencing with the amount Fred pulled out of his pay packet).

glamorousgrandmother · 18/02/2019 08:33

shouldn't Val have expressed surprise that she had so much if it was unusual?
Perhaps she had always had a stash there and Val had never thought to query it. Presumably she doesn't bake or do a roast very often.

Pebble21uk · 18/02/2019 08:57

There are only 2 episodes left to this series... and given that last night's episode was a a bit of a plot-pusher-on rather than anything very dramatic in its own right, they must be setting things up for Season 9. I know it's already been commissioned, but they don't know if they're going to do a season 10 yet.

To be honest I think it's kind of had its day. I miss some of the older characters, can't stand Dr Turner and feel so many storylines are being re-hashed now. Having said that, I still watch!!!

I'd rather it went out with a bit of bang and got a few older characters back for a guest appearance (Patsy, Delia, Mary Cynthia, Chummy et al!!)

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 18/02/2019 09:13

At what point did the Nonatus nuns stop practising midwifery out of interest?

Don't the series usually end with a big finale (wedding, death, departure)? What are we expecting for this series - something to do with the Turners' foster child? I'm somehow expecting that she won't be adopted to another home?

HoraceCope · 18/02/2019 09:41

No the turners child is going but they have made her a scrap book of memories.
imo

i hope gran doesnt have a fire and lose her money, her money in the oven must play a part in an episode.
perhaps nurse crane will marry?

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 18/02/2019 09:46

No the turners child is going but they have made her a scrap book of memories. Yes, it's looking like that but it could play out that the adoption doesn't go ahead?

Nurse Crane still seems rather ambivalent about the overtures of romance she's receiving? I find it hard to believe that she will go from reticence to marrying in two episodes?

SoupDragon · 18/02/2019 09:47

Val's gran could well be the abortionist. Lots of money, has an infection (why the boil onthe bum otherwise? It makes no sense)

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 18/02/2019 10:01

I would have thought that the older midwives/nuns, doing their rounds in the same area for years on end, would have had some idea as to who the local abortionists were though, wouldn't you?

iklboo · 18/02/2019 10:11

I'm getting a bit fed up of O'Patrick and SighShelagh and their smugness. I'd love Timothy to rebel and join a hippy commune or something.

certainlymerry · 18/02/2019 10:15

Ikiboo! That would be great!!

AppleKatie · 18/02/2019 10:19

A Lucille whirlwind marriage is a possibility. Once she’s let him past her wall of steel and he’s accepted Christ back into his life I can’t see her seeing the point in a long courtship.

Bittermints · 18/02/2019 10:19

Not just one pound notes back then, also ten shilling notes! Ten shillings = 50p now. A stack of those wouldn't add up to all that much for an old lady living alone on a pension. I do hope she has nothing to do with the abortion storyline. I can't see Val growing up unaware of that going on in her family and doing nothing to stop it or at least get them to sterilise their instruments.

I'm assuming the big season finale is Lucille and Cyril getting married.

CocoLoco87 · 18/02/2019 10:32

Sister Monica Joan isn't getting any younger. Presumably we're going to have a sad episode at some point for her? Or maybe they'll wait till next series. I'd love a Lucille & Cyril wedding! And Nurse Crane and the policeman.

Clawdy · 18/02/2019 10:33

Er.....what has a boil on the bum got to do with being an abortionist!?

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 18/02/2019 10:37

I had a boil on my bottom when I was a young teenager - presumably an ingrown hair?
