KDrama Addicts Anonymous (thread 2)

A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the Kdrama-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, but the more seriously addicted have other sources, including dramabus. To our surprise, we managed to fill a whole thread, which is full of recommendations (and ones to swerve): www.mumsnet.com/Talk/streamed_tv/3337309-K-Drama-recommendations?pg=1

We have some recommendations for newbies:

My (current) top 5 – all Netflix
Live
Prison Playbook
Don’t Dare to Dream
Black
His Master’s Sun

Betty’s top 5
Black (Netflix)
Fight For My Way (Drama bus)
What’s Up With Secretary Kim (Viki)
I Hear Your Voice (Netflix /Viki)
Don’t Dare To Dream (Netflix / Viki)

Bea’s top 5
Strong Girl Bong Soon (netflix)
What's Wrong With Secretary kim (Viki)
She Was Pretty (dramabus)
Healer (netflix)

Our lovely occasional posters who have lived in Korea, are Korean or have Korean partners/family members pop up to provide the context for some of the more baffling cultural references.

We love a good kdrama bingo card to mark off the regular tropes – white truck of doom, drunk/med evac piggybacks, stalkers, rooftop apartments etc

We also stray into Korean cookery and kpop when the mood takes us. To get to grips with the lingo, try dramaloveaddicts.proboards.com/thread/24/korean-word-day?page=1

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in…

I have a question about WYWS. FL’s mum is now feeding ML + brother + 2ML a banquet style breakfast every morning with many, many dishes. How is this feat achieved? I have seen the households dig out boxes of side dishes from the fridge, but do women really get up at the crack of dawn to prepare the soups, stews and grilled meats, or is this just TV land fantasy?

Another random question. I saw mention of a character not having his car with him on a particular day because of “the 10th day rule”. Are there restrictions on driving in Seoul which mean you have to leave your car at home every so many days? I recall Athens had a scheme like this based on your vehicle registration number, possibly the last digit/letter and all the rich people just bought extra cars which were allowed into the city on the other days.

Breakfast!... Yes I've thought this often!... There's sometimes a full blown banquet to be had!... How do they function with eating that much!!... 😯... Not to mention the time it must take cooking it!...

boatyardblues · 22/01/2019 20:15

Tsk. LJS is only doing rescue breaths. You need cardiac massage to circulate the oxygenated blood....

Haha

I too think they eat a hell of a lot in all the shows or movies I have seen so far . Upset ? Let's eat . Happy ? Time for food. #Tough Day ? Let's go to get food .

Yet the women are so dainty . But boy they can all eat a lot .

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 22/01/2019 21:04

I think the only exception was Joint Security Area (444 from Black is in it, ever so young) but as that concerned the border of North and South Korea food didn't feature heavily .

The cooking and dining is a big bonus for me. As I’ve mentioned before, I glean tips and ideas for my own culinary adventures.

Sigh!... WYWS... all finished!... In my top 5!!... It's sooooo lovely! I laughed loads and blubbed!...

Toasty LJS! what are we going to do without you for 2 years!!... They should stockpile their dramas and drip feed them over the two years whilst they're away!! 😊

I loved the plot of this one and like I said before all the characters were ever so likable!...

Yes! In my top 5... But what do I have to shove out to make room?? 😂... Yes! Boatyardblues! I know you'd be happy for me to relegate Sec Kim and Vice Chairman!! 😂😂😂

boatyardblues · 22/01/2019 22:56

I’ve just finished it too. Not top 5 for me, but I have really enjoyed it.

Bea · 22/01/2019 22:57

What next then??...... 😂😊

boatyardblues · 22/01/2019 22:57

And yes, Sec Kim is definitely demotion worthy. Wink

Something in the Rain? More of a straight romance, but big on family dynamics, social expectation and workplace culture. The leads have good chemistry, the supporting cast are really good & I thought it was a useful (dramatised) primer on Korean social mores. All of this makes it sound dull, but the central love story is really lovely.

Also, lots of Jung Hae In. 👌

Have you seen
It's a mini web drama where a shopgirl is given the chance to kiss 7 famous men inc. Toasty LYS, Ji Chang Wook & Park Hye Jin

Just to tide you over for a few mins while you decide what to watch next Grin

Bea · 22/01/2019 23:06

Hmmm! You could be right!!... Started to watch the guardian before my evening stint... Think Rabbits mentioned it earlier... As it was on netflix... Ease of use and all that... However I've watched WYWS on my telly by casting it and it's worked beautifully!! 👍👍

bettys · 22/01/2019 23:25

I’m holding off on starting something new until Kingdom drops this weekend.

Zombies!!! Sageuk!!! Handsome men wielding swords!!!

bettys · 22/01/2019 23:27

I think I need bit of guyliner action and simmering tension

boatyardblues · 22/01/2019 23:48

I’m dipping my toe in Devilish Joy on Viki. So far, so fluffy. The ML is another mountain of a man - as I said before, kdrama seems to love casting very tall men. I am having a moment’s Father Ted-style small/far away angst ‘cause it could just be that the FL is 4’10. They look like Action Man and Pippa (remember Pippa dolls?) standing next to one another.

OP posts:
boatyardblues · 22/01/2019 23:50

Viki says he’s 186cm and she’s 160cm tall, so 6’1 and 5’2 respectively.

boatyardblues · 23/01/2019 00:43

Oops. I’m not even sure I intend to continue, but there we go. Episode 1 was a solid 6/10 but not stellar viewing. It managed a few bingo boxes early - white truck of doom, wrongful conviction amongst them. The follow-up ‘meet cute’ gets special mention for its oddness.

Bettys! That was hilarious!!... 😁😁😁
A drama before breakfast!! Scandalous!!

Good morning all! And may you all sit down to a freshly prepped breakfast with at least 20 side dishes!! 😂

Bea · 23/01/2019 07:31

Boatyardblues! Yes!
.. Tall men seem to be the thing!... I loved all the jokes about Toasty LJS in Pinnochio! 😂😂

boatyardblues · 23/01/2019 17:49

It’s noticeable how much this thread has slowed now we are all back to work. My earlier post about prepping for a new thread seems waaaaaaay keen. Grin

Bea · 23/01/2019 19:13

Well according to my page count... We're on page 9 and 10 is the limit as far as I can tell!
Prep away Boatyardblues!! I'm sure we can fill this one quite easily!! 😂

boatyardblues · 23/01/2019 19:15

This one makes 876/1000 limit.
