A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the Kdrama-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, but the more seriously addicted have other sources, including dramabus. To our surprise, we managed to fill a whole thread, which is full of recommendations (and ones to swerve): www.mumsnet.com/Talk/streamed_tv/3337309-K-Drama-recommendations?pg=1

We have some recommendations for newbies:

My (current) top 5 – all Netflix
Live
Prison Playbook
Don’t Dare to Dream
Black
His Master’s Sun

Betty’s top 5
Black (Netflix)
Fight For My Way (Drama bus)
What’s Up With Secretary Kim (Viki)
I Hear Your Voice (Netflix /Viki)
Don’t Dare To Dream (Netflix / Viki)

Bea’s top 5
Strong Girl Bong Soon (netflix)
What's Wrong With Secretary kim (Viki)
She Was Pretty (dramabus)
Healer (netflix)

Our lovely occasional posters who have lived in Korea, are Korean or have Korean partners/family members pop up to provide the context for some of the more baffling cultural references.

We love a good kdrama bingo card to mark off the regular tropes – white truck of doom, drunk/med evac piggybacks, stalkers, rooftop apartments etc

We also stray into Korean cookery and kpop when the mood takes us. To get to grips with the lingo, try dramaloveaddicts.proboards.com/thread/24/korean-word-day?page=1

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in…

Because the viki subtitles are so much more faithful, I have a lot of questions right now. [[https://www.90daykorean.com/oppa-hyung-noona-unnie/ This site]] answered some:

oppa (오빠) = females speaking to older males

hyung (형) = males speaking to older males

noona (누나) = males speaking to older females

unnie (언니) = females speaking to older females

Sometimes I have to pause to read the Viki subs especially if they’re explaining colloquialisms

Sometimes I have to pause to...
... Catch a handsome face!
... Gasp at a crazy suit!
... Puzzle at a ludicrous storyline
... Sob into a tissue!
😍😂😭

Bea you do make me laugh! 🤣

Same here, but also to admire good tailoring like Bea.

Bea - I recognised that b/w checked suit immediately from your thumbnail. I believe I commented on the thread about how awful it was. Not the kind of tailoring I meant at all!!!

OP posts:
Bea · 16/01/2019 17:54

Ha ha! That suit!.... When it appeared I was like!.... 😯😁😯😁😯... Watching Shopaholic Louis at the mo and that's hot some humdinger suits in that!! 😁😭

boatyardblues · 16/01/2019 17:59

I’m still trying to forget Goblin’s mustard yellow tanktop. 😫

I’m trying to work out what the FL is in Just Between Lovers. Structural or civil engineer? Technician? She seems to have a hugely diverse skill set that is wasted on model building. I was also surprised to see so much paper-based stuff too. No CAD?

OP posts:
bettys · 16/01/2019 19:38

Def. not an engineer. I thought she was a model-maker/draughtsman who had read around the subject massively due to her personal interest & involvement. They sent her on site for dramatic effect & to meet up with lovely eyes tousled hair.

Yeah not much evidence of CAD or Revit but they still use models as clients can't always think in 3D or read blueprints and still a lot of paper plans used in architecture & engineering offices.

bettys · 16/01/2019 19:44

On the same note, in many dramas I notice a huge amount of books, whether it is in the characters bedrooms or coffee shops. They are piled everywhere. I love the look of it but it is not something you see much in the UK any more (well, you do in our house 'cos we can't bear to chuck 'em) A lot of my friends houses have very few books or vinyl/CDs.

boatyardblues · 16/01/2019 20:05

lovely eyes tousled hair

😂 (Spot on, though.)

You could be right about her being a well-read hobbyist.

I keep wondering why no-one has proper site boots and how ML gets away with not doing up the chin strap on his hard hat. 🙄

I have just spent far too long looking for pictures of JCW in Healer in a 3/4 length coat re tailoring.

Some sweet pictures of Jisoo at the Fendi show on instagram

In the same way that surgeons don't wear wear eye protectors against arterial spray Hmm

boatyardblues · 16/01/2019 20:16

Lovely Jisoo pic, Betty.

Um, am I the kdrama ‘elf ‘n’ safety’ killjoy? 😞

OP posts:
bettys · 16/01/2019 20:22

Lol it’s okay to suspend disbelief & have goblins & grim reapers but be aghast if a chinstrap isn’t done up 😂😂

You’ve got to admit it’s in keeping with his character though.

bettys · 16/01/2019 20:28

Is it just me that is secretly chuffed when I discover a new oppa and can have a spiral of dramas?

It's like a sub-genre of kdrama to explore when that happens.

Was that an ad? A short? It was a bit ‘Princess Di’ in the Martin Bashir interview for my liking, but I am genuinely looking forwards to JCW’s return to tv/film work as he is properly lovely to look at.

I have no idea what that video was about but 'twas v v enjoyable
Oppa JCW Smile

I thought I caught the word “chingu” (friend/s) part way through, but it could have been a completely different word. 🤷‍♂️

The police detective in shopaholic Louis is rather dashing! ❤️😁
