KDrama Addicts Anonymous (thread 2)

A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the Kdrama-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, but the more seriously addicted have other sources, including dramabus. To our surprise, we managed to fill a whole thread, which is full of recommendations (and ones to swerve): www.mumsnet.com/Talk/streamed_tv/3337309-K-Drama-recommendations?pg=1

We have some recommendations for newbies:

My (current) top 5 – all Netflix
Live
Prison Playbook
Don’t Dare to Dream
Black
His Master’s Sun

Betty’s top 5
Black (Netflix)
Fight For My Way (Drama bus)
What’s Up With Secretary Kim (Viki)
I Hear Your Voice (Netflix /Viki)
Don’t Dare To Dream (Netflix / Viki)

Bea’s top 5
Strong Girl Bong Soon (netflix)
What's Wrong With Secretary kim (Viki)
She Was Pretty (dramabus)
Healer (netflix)

Our lovely occasional posters who have lived in Korea, are Korean or have Korean partners/family members pop up to provide the context for some of the more baffling cultural references.

We love a good kdrama bingo card to mark off the regular tropes – white truck of doom, drunk/med evac piggybacks, stalkers, rooftop apartments etc

We also stray into Korean cookery and kpop when the mood takes us. To get to grips with the lingo, try dramaloveaddicts.proboards.com/thread/24/korean-word-day?page=1

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in…

I finished Goblin this morning. I was so wrung out at the end, I was going to have a break. I just rolled into ep 4 of Chicago Typewriter. 😩 Earlier night tonight though! Honest....

Oh I loved W - nice chemistry between the leads, good story, well shot, Lee Jong Suk, the bloke with curly hair that always plays the comedy character that was the uncle in WLFKBS....the writer has also done Memories of the Alhambra currently running on Netflix which looks great but I have decided to stop watching until I can binge a wodge of it.

Just when I think I've seen it all I find something new....or rather it's one that Heechuloppa recommended. Manhole (Drama bus) which from the poster image I thought would be frilly & frothy is actually so much more after the first couple of episodes. It's about a man who time travels through a manhole to try and get his first love to marry him, but is more multi-layered than it sounds.

bettys · 28/12/2018 22:24

Ooooh you are so bad boatyardblues but Chicago Typewriter is so good!

bettys · 28/12/2018 22:26

What did you think of the ending to Goblin? I was disappointed I must admit.

Btw the ML in Manhole is a ringer for JCW without the black clothes and spy gear.

boatyardblues · 28/12/2018 22:34

It kind of went out with a whimper, Betty, I agree. I also thought it had 18 episodes (they are unsubbed specials tacked on at the end), so was a bit surprised when it suddenly screeched to a halt. However, it was so consistently pleasing all the way through that I will forgive it. I got a good vibe from Gong Yoo & think he would probably good company over a pint or two in the pub. DS2, who watched some of it with me, said Goblin looked like a kind person. (If there is press coverage about him drowning kittens and/or drug fuelled rampages, I’d rather not know.)

Agree Gong Yoo seems like the kind of bloke you'd have a fun evening with. And quite dishy to boot. If you can track it down he is great in Coffee Prince and also Last Train To Busan (Amazon Prime, zombie film). I did rather like his long hair and sad eyes when he was the General in ye olden days. I didn't like the age difference between the two leads though, and was very exasperated with the white truck of doom.

Hope you're enjoying Chicago Typewriter, I found the historical section fascinating.

boatyardblues · 29/12/2018 00:02

I have just shut down viki and am heading up to bed now. Chicago Typewriter is very well done, but I feel we’re still stuck in first gear in ep 5. Things need to kick up a gear or it’ll drive me nuts.

W.... ❤️❤️❤️👍... But time for bed now! 😭😭😭

bettys · 29/12/2018 07:55

Bea !

I think I remember Chicago Typewriter having a slow patch and then picking up again, stick with it!

Bea · 29/12/2018 10:40

I love the comic colours of W.. It is beautifully shot like Bettys said!... I'm on ep14.... Don't want it to end!!...

Bea · 29/12/2018 14:43

Ugh! The mental gymnastics I have to perform to keep up with W...!... I'm exhausted!... My brain hurts!... Or that could be just surviving on 5 hours sleep for the last two nights!! 😭😂😯

bettys · 29/12/2018 15:05

Oh I didn’t try & understand the whys & wherefores just went with the flow!!

Have just driven home for several hours pondering (due to a comment from boatyardblues) on who out of my Oppas list I would spend a night in the pub with most happily.

Bea · 29/12/2018 15:34

Hmmm! How many can we have?

boatyardblues · 29/12/2018 15:37

Jo Jung-Suk (DDTD) looks like he’d be a good laugh.

OP posts:
boatyardblues · 29/12/2018 15:40

I’m not sure whether he’d be good company, but I could happily spend an evening gazing at So Ji Sub. I am particularly fascinated with his beautiful hands.

Couldn’t work out here whether it was the 900+ or the 15+ year age gap that you found problematic, Betty. Grin

OP posts:
Bea · 29/12/2018 16:04

Lee Joon Suk... Purely because he looks so slightly mortified and embarressed at

I'd ply him with drinks and then put the song on!! Grin
bettys · 29/12/2018 16:13

Ha ha the 15+ yr age gap, and although I know they're 18-19 I find the school uniforms make them look so much younger.

Hmmm Jo Jung-Suk would def. be fun to get drunk & sing songs with before tipsily lurching home.

So Ji Sub would probably want to go to a rapping gig

Gong Yoo would have the conversational edge on PSJ I'm sure but I wouldn't be able to choose between them for who would wear their knitwear best.

bettys · 29/12/2018 16:20

That video of Lee Jong Suk is one of my favourites!!

He's not the most natural of dancers or singers Grin Although he has a couple of songs on OST for While You Were Sleeping he's admitted he's tone deaf and it all goes a bit wobbly when he sings live!

He looks so shy he'd need a fair few drinks, but be fun when tipsy.

boatyardblues · 29/12/2018 16:22

In a hard-to-separate-fiction-from-reality way, I suspect his hard core fitness & diet routine in Oh My Venus is not a million miles from his RL habits. I therefore worry he’d be a bore in restaurants and out drinking, judging my sloppy habits.

Absolutely! While I am drawn to the perfection of their physique & looks IRL I'd get on much better with the ones who look like they'd be happy to throw their diet & fitness routine to the winds and sink a bottle of pinot with me and have a bag of chips on the way home

boatyardblues · 29/12/2018 16:48

Gunner Jang would be a much better bet for Korean BBQ and soju. Smile

Siwon In She Was Pretty ! He’d be good for a piggy-back ride too😆

Bea · 29/12/2018 19:59

Getting ready for this evenings last two eps of W!.... I'm dying to know what happens and yet torn with the fact that it'll be over! 😭😭😭

Bea · 29/12/2018 22:07

All done!... Fabulous! What a story!! Loved it!.. Another favourite!... What next!...
I loved the colours and the comic book style! Very beautifully done!...
These dramas are amazing!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️😁
