DH and I are really enjoying it.
I love things that build slowly.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 05/11/2018 07:01

Haven’t watched episode 2 yet as we’re waiting to watch with DS but we loved it here. Not all drama has to be paint by numbers! Isn’t it good to have something that makes you think occasionally, or does all TV have to be dumbed down these days?

WipsGlitter · 05/11/2018 07:30

I don't think it has to be "dumbed down" but it needs to be well acted and scripted, mostly understandable to the average viewer and maintain some sort of pace. I found last nights jumping about in time very confusing.

Will be interesting to see their viewing figures.

PrincessScarlett · 05/11/2018 07:35

I think it will all add up in the end so it's a case of keep watching and letting things fall into place.

Keen to read the book after seeing first 2 episodes.

Holidayshopping · 05/11/2018 08:53

I just don’t get why she is agreeing to any of this?!

Kinraddie · 05/11/2018 09:16

I think Florence Pugh looks like Charlotte Church & Kiernan Shipka (from Mad Men).

Bootanicbanshee · 05/11/2018 09:17

It doesn't have to be dumbed down, no but it does have to work for the medium it's on and it's not gripping enough.

The scenes at the acropolis were laughable with her prancing about in that awful dress and the music/shadows artsy stuff was trying too hard in those scenes. Charlie playing guitar on the beach holiday was annoying as is her gravelly voice. She also looks too contemporary and the script uses language that jars I agree. The artfully scened nipple shots are cringeworthy too.

Shame as their adaptation of the Night Manager was very good.

PrincessScarlett · 05/11/2018 09:20

I know Holiday. If it were me I'd be asking to be sent home! I'm assuming she is so utterly bored with her life and fed up of being in mediocre plays with no recognition of her her talent. She made up a whole new history for herself (dad being in prison, baliffs etc) which indicates to me she comes from a normal family and is a bit of a fantasist.

That is why she was chosen, her ability to lie to those around her, even when put under pressure.

I'm assuming the book gives more depth to her character and why she lies about everything.

IcedPurple · 05/11/2018 10:54

does all TV have to be dumbed down these days?

Well no. But if it's to fulfill its function of providing entertainment, it has to have plausible, interesting characters and plotlines which make sense, at least within the context of a spy thriller.

None of the above is true here. It's thoroughly unengaging. The idea that people don't like it because they aren't clever enough to 'get' a Le Carre thriller is patronising. Maybe people just don't think it's a very good production?

WipsGlitter · 05/11/2018 12:03

Totally agree @IcedPurple !!

WrenNatsworthy · 05/11/2018 13:39

Or maybe we could just say folk have different tastes in storytelling?
MN is fighty today 😂

Melamin · 05/11/2018 14:26

I'm still loving it! I even love the garish dresses - so much better than that M&S pink binliner - this is where they should have been going. (TBH they can stick the braless look - reminds me too much of my mother in the 1970s Blush )

I watched it twice yesterday, but need to watch episode 1 again when I get the chance.

I don't know where they have the chap in the padded cell's brother - or if they do Confused - need to watch the beginning again.

Holidayshopping · 05/11/2018 14:48

I don’t think they do have the brother, do they? Just him-who they took a photo of under a blanket and then drugged with an orange?? Did they do something with the photo to make it look like the brother?! 70s photoshop?!!

Melamin · 05/11/2018 14:56

I thought they had used the photo of him, but thought that surely he would recognise his own face? Confused. I was going to look at the start again to see if I had missed something.

From when they were looking at the film of Salim at the meeting they were very interested that he mentioned 'brothers' so I don't know how much is a stab in the dark.

Melamin · 05/11/2018 14:57

I don't think they could have photoshopped it - the photo looked like a polaroid instant photo.

Holidayshopping · 05/11/2018 15:06

Didn’t we see them taking the photo of him though?

Melamin · 05/11/2018 17:30

They spent a lot of time arranging him to match what looked like a picture they had when they photographed him. The photo of Khalil had the same outfit and blanket. We don't know what Khalil looks like.

Anyway, he has given them duff information about Salzburg station.

cocopops · 05/11/2018 17:37

I hadn’t a clue what was going on last night 🤣

WipsGlitter · 05/11/2018 17:43

I need to rewatch last nights episode...

Melamin · 05/11/2018 17:45

I am still having trouble naming everyone - especially as they change names a lot. I just have to keep watching it over Grin

thenightsky · 05/11/2018 18:23

Totally lost the plot last night. I'm going to have to re-watch it and try to figure out what's going on.

VillanellesHairPin · 05/11/2018 19:39

Guys, the director is considered an auteur, so we're all wrong about it being shit.

MissMarplesKnitting · 05/11/2018 19:42

Let Carre's sons are producers too. I reckon it might just be a slow burner.

Cocolepew · 05/11/2018 20:04

I loved it and bizarrely understand what's going on, I'm usually stumped.

Holidayshopping · 05/11/2018 20:40

Can you explain it to me slowly @Cocolepew? Blush
