So was Gadi's secret all along that he is an elderly English lady who is into gardening and teapots?

I wished they had followed the book and showed Charlie's breakdown after working for the Israelis. The book ending may be a bit overwrought but I thought it conveyed the cost of the mission on both Charlie and Becker.

Having said that, Kurtz is a less sympathetic character than in the book, and it was satisfying to see his hastily extended plans for Khalil come to end because Becker couldn't stand the idea of Charlie being with Khalil in the long term. Gadi basically pushed her into sleeping with Khalil so that Gadi can kill him and have Charlie for himself.

The very end was quite a lot sunnier than in the book, really - literally and figuratively.

LadyPeterWimsey · 02/12/2018 22:33

I did enjoy seeing a smilier Gadi at the end, though.

The whole series looked gorgeous, and the director is a genius at framing shots, and cutting away. I love that all that creative energy was poured into a Sunday night spy series, albeit one based the very best of the genre.

I'm obviously going to have to watch the whole thing from the beginning again...

PrincessScarlett · 02/12/2018 22:59

I wondered if the ending tonight did justice to the book Lady Peter.

I thought it did show the toll it took on Charlie so can only imagine the book ending is darker still. To me, as with the previous episode, it felt like I was living it through Charlie's eyes.

At the outset the Israelis made out the Palestinians were the baddies but the last 2 episodes showed them as humans, and nice ones at that. Even Kahlil who was meant to be the evil mastermind and killer came across in an endearing way. I felt Charlie's pain at all the killing her intelligence reaped.

BeanBagLady · 02/12/2018 23:20

I’m not sure I would describe Khalil as endearing. Principled, perhaps, within his position.

These radios.

Am I going wrong or did I miss something?

How did Charlie come to have 2?

Charlie had one radio, and Khali took the batteries out in the wood. He put it back in her rucksack.

Then after the bomb drop Gadi swapped that radio with the new one, the one that would stop transmitting when she took the batteries out.

Then in the night, when she left the bedroom to turn the TV off, she took the batteries out of her new radio, but they were still getting a signal in the van.

Then when Khalil asked her to turn on the radio, and she did and then handed it over and he took the batteries out, the signal stopped.

So did she have 2 radios? Confused

UrsulaPandress · 02/12/2018 23:23

She didn't take the batteries out.

UrsulaPandress · 02/12/2018 23:24

All the killings just before the end. Who was killing whom?

StripySocksAndDocs · 02/12/2018 23:25

No just one. She didn’t take the batteries out at night. Almost did but didn’t.

friskybivalves · 02/12/2018 23:25

The Israelis were systematically and ruthlessly wiping out all the Palestinian cell - Helga, the camp, Fatmeh, the lawyer etc etc.

friskybivalves · 02/12/2018 23:26

The way Gadi emptied an entire
Clip of bullets into khalil. Talk about overkill. That felt very personal.

BeanBagLady · 03/12/2018 00:22

Oh, thank you for clearing up my batteries question.

In a way Gadi was killing off his alter ego. He had trained Charlie to fall in love with Salim and then all the way through this episode she referenced her ‘practice’ scenes with Gadi when in the situation with Khalil.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 03/12/2018 06:45

Yes, it was personal with Gadi killing Khalil wasn't it? Do we suppose that Charlie and he would end up properly together?

Excellent series.

PrincessScarlett · 03/12/2018 07:43

Beanbag, I mean Khalil was endearing to Charlie as he was telling her she didn't have to do it, he wouldn't come after her, the banter between them, he came across as though he had a softer side with Charlie.

Thought the actress that played Charlie was brilliant, and I actually found her quite annoying in the beginning.

Ontheboardwalk · 03/12/2018 19:37

Just finished I enjoyed it. Must admit I waited till near the end to watch them all together in the shortest amount of time as possible so found it easier to follow. I struggle to remember one day to the next let alone what happened a week ago

princess I agree with you, I found Charlie really annoying at the start but thought she was brilliant by the end.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 03/12/2018 20:36

I guess Charlie grew up lots over the course of her performance of a lifetime!

misscockerspaniel · 03/12/2018 20:39

We have been spoilt this year with some brilliant drama. I thought Killing Eve was excellent but The Little Drummer Girl is even better.

Melamin · 03/12/2018 22:55

Yes they have both been brilliant. Totally spoiled - long may it continue!

I am putting this book on my Christmas list as it is one I haven't read.

Xiaoxiong · 05/12/2018 15:31

I'm so relieved they didn't completely ruin the ending. I had a mortal terror they were going to try and shoehorn in a season 2 for a minute when Kurtz was saying "let them run".

Wonderful series and it improved so much over the course of the episodes. We both thought Charlie was so utterly annoying at the start and it was all so confusing - I kept having to explain to DH what was going on and he was ready to give up after the second episode but now he's so glad I forced him to watch to the end!!

For those of you who haven't read it, you really must, it's brilliant and the book is so rich in detail and psychological insight into all the characters, even ones that were peripheral in the series like Schwili the forger or the people that owned the house in Hampstead who moved to their country home in Marlow, anything to help Israel, etc.

IPromiseIWontBeNaughty · 09/12/2018 06:55

Have finally watched all of this. Loved watching it all unfold.

Florence reminded me also of young Kate Winslett which I found off putting to begin with. Pugh will go far.

Was the tv ending very different to the book?

Everincreasingfrequency · 09/12/2018 09:17

As Charlie didn't remove the batteries was she aiming to let Khalil escape? I can see that it would be plausible that she would have balked at helping Gadi/?Max man to kill him (rather than have him and the others put on trial). But her apparent affection for Khalil a few hours after he had (he thought) had the lecturer blown up was a bit odd - or was the lovingish chat in bed more 'acting'?

Where was the place in the woods? Was it supposed to be quite near London - trying to think of a possible location that would have got her into central London very quickly!
