So far I have to agree, if only they hadn't gone for the stupid love angle with Martha in the 1st place eh?

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 12/04/2008 22:07

If only Billie Piper hadn't left.

Nyeh · 12/04/2008 22:15
Sad

Well I liked it. I liked CT too (but I didn't watch her comedy show, so haven't any history to mix up with it) I enjoyed the contrast between the humour at the beginning and the intensity of the emotions at the end (10 being directly responsible for the death of Pompeii) Kudos to Donna for saying they don't matter and pushing the lever with the Doctor.

So, MN verdict so far - not so good. Geek verdict on geek forum was the opposite, about 90% of posters were giving it either 4 or 5 out of 5.

PersephoneSnape · 12/04/2008 22:29

geek forum (outpost gallifrey?) refuses to admit there could be anything wrong.

I didn't mind the martha unrequited angle. I found it all very poignant.

serenity · 12/04/2008 22:32

No, not Outpost Gallifrey (far too scary) general geekery rather than specific. No, they aren't 'head in the sand' types, they can be very harsh (overly in my opinion) when they don't like something. They were quite divided over last weeks episode, but so far seem to be pretty keen on todays

PersephoneSnape · 12/04/2008 22:35

probably on the basis that it's better than last weeks!!

Peter capaldi was good though!

(gallifrey is as scary as hell! i only lurk on the basis that i might do doctor who asa mastermind category one day - and to impress my 10 year old)

serenity · 12/04/2008 22:43

LOL. I only lurk on there when they're filming to follow the threads posted by people stalking the film crew in Cardiff. It's a little bit too intense for me otherwise - I have other things to obsess over apart from DW

NoBiggy · 12/04/2008 22:46

That "Positions!" thing...

Oh, hang on.

It's Mary Poppins.

As you were.

MrsTweedy · 12/04/2008 22:58

So it is! (Positions that is)
I liked the Spartacus bit. In fact Donna seems a bit more knowledgeable in general than other assistants.

Shadow proclamation was mentioned again, and what was that about Donna having something on her back?

AitchTwoOh · 12/04/2008 23:27

i thought it was okaaaay, bit muddled, should have been tighter. too much shouting. CT v good at crying but agree about Nan voice coming out too often. it's not that funny...

QueenMeabhOfConnaught · 12/04/2008 23:30

Wasn't impressed at all - the monsters were crap and CT spends all her time pulling funny faces.

David Tennant makes me want to shout "If the wind changes your face will stay like that" as he does that wide-eyed, gaping mouth thing YET AGAIN.

NoBiggy · 13/04/2008 01:35

We see too much of David Tennant I've decided. I'm quite happy to see him as the doctor, or any other part - happy to see him thesp anywhere. But seeing David Tennant all the time, it makes it hard for me to suspend disbelief. And I know he's a fine actor, it's just, as if I've seen how the trick is done now, and it'll never be the same.

I've spoiled it for myself by taking too much interest, instead of just watching the 45 mins and leaving it at that

Well I bloody well loved it, so there see.

The dilemmas/tough choices thing seems a bit foreshadowy to me, and I just totally loved how they used the old circularity time travel thing, with Pompeii actually being the Doctor all along. And the Tardis making Latin sound like Welsh tickled my funny bone, as did the Mary Poppins homage.

I genuinely though CT was really good, and I like the way she actually stands up to the Doctor. Her tears at the end had me all lump int' throat.

OG isn't scary. (Isn't OG anymore, either) You just have know which threads are going to be interminably fastidious, like the legendary arguments about the size of the bleedin' Tardis windows, or, my particular favourite where someone actually photo-shopped the Tardis onto the prow of the Titanic to prove that it wasn't physically possible.

serenity · 13/04/2008 20:23

No, it's the Doctor Who forum isn't it? Outpost Gallifrey sounded better though.

I knew you'd like it. I heart Sue, she's fab

Can someone explain the 'Mary Poppins' bit? I'm a freak, I've never seen it (apart from clips on Screen Test) and now I'm intrigued.......

SueBaroo · 13/04/2008 20:31

In Mary Poppins, there's an old Navy Admiral who's a bit mad, and he sets off a rooftop canon on the hour.

The people in the neighbouring houses can set their watches by it, and the reverberations from the canonfire set everything wobbling like an earthquake. So, on the hour, everyone in the house gets into position to stop all the china crashing to the floor.

Almost identical to the scene with Peter Capaldi en famille.

UnquietDad · 13/04/2008 20:34

8.1 million people watched, so they must be doing something right! (Last week's got 8.4)

I really liked it, so there [defiant emoticon]. My sister did the Cambridge Latin course and was all squeeee when they cropped up (I am ten years older and had to deal with Ecce Romani instead). Apparently they had noticed when doing it that it was all "Quintus has been drinking in the garden... Quintus is drinking in the atrium... Quintus will be drinking in the baths..." so they had concluded that he had a bit of a drink problem and she was extra-squeeee to see that being reflected too.

KatyMac · 13/04/2008 20:46

That's where I recgnised it from

I told DH it was a

serenity · 13/04/2008 21:03

That makes sense, thanks

Homage, KatyMac?

PortAndLemon · 13/04/2008 21:03

They are also (apparently) based on actual archeological evidence of the existence of Caecilius the marble dealer living in Pompeii at the time of the eruption. So it's all true. The pyrocanths (or whatever they were) and everything...

RustyBear · 13/04/2008 21:03

If you look up Caecilius in Wikipedia, there's already a bit about this episode:

"A 2008 episode of Doctor Who set in Pompeii features Peter Capaldi as Caecilius and Tracey Childs as his wife Metella."

KatyMac · 13/04/2008 21:15

That's the word
