Anyone going to be watching the new Doctor Who now it is a woman?
Love Jodie as an actress. Never been fussed on the doctor before!!

And the superfluous mushy bits took up far too much time!

StarbucksSmarterSister · 01/01/2019 21:19

Just dire. I've been watching since the very first episode. Some doctors are better than others, it's personal taste, but this is terrible. The writing is awful, JW is awful and so are the companions. And why did it turn into Eastenders?

Anyone who thinks this is good needs to get on I player and watch the last 13 years, which is what I've been doing recently. Even the dodgy episodes were 100 times better than this.

TheNumberfaker · 01/01/2019 22:55

What happened with the bits of the dalek that were in Siberia and the Pacific island? Perhaps I was distracted when that was shown...

I enjoyed it and I have enjoyed the whole series. I thought it was a great way to introduce a dalek, much better than the usual invading army. I have been watching since 2005 and would agree that the Christopher Ecclestone and David Tennant series were outstanding. However, I found the whole complicated story arcs/River Song/Clara stories difficult to follow and didn't enjoy those series nearly as much. I also loved Tom Baker and Peter Davison as a child, so have been watching Doctor Who a long time.

RebelWitchFace · 01/01/2019 23:04

It was...fine.

They kind of beamed to the piece in Sheffield.

ikltownofboothlehem · 01/01/2019 23:06

Ryan's dad was a waste of a good actor. I'm soooooo over Daleks. I never found them scary. I was kind of Hmm 'not this again'.

Goodness knows. I think you have identified a major plot hole.

Also the plot was nonsense. It referred to this terrible, almost mythic final battle on earth in the Dark Ages but there have been Dalek on earth stories much later than the Dark Ages.

The bits of the Dalek were all beamed to Sheffield.

I think there are too many assistants at the moment. I can't stand Bradley Walsh, so I wish they'd lose him.

MargueritaPink · 02/01/2019 00:06

You're right -I missed that bit.

Tonight the assistant tally went up to 7. I expected to hate Bradley Walsh as I usually do but as the other 2 are so boring (and terrible actors) he is the least worst of the 3.

SoupDragon · 02/01/2019 08:02

Bradley is utterly shit and has been from day 1. No proper emotion crosses his face or enters the tone of his voice. He just has a slightly constipated spaniel look about him at all times.

I thought the actor who pays Ryan did a good job of the scene which was just him and his dad though.

Badcat666 · 02/01/2019 09:22

Oddly I think Bradley is the only one on the entire set that could act so that's saying something.

The rest are like they are fresh out of Am dram. "Now lets pretend we are being controlled by the bagpipe monster!!" twitches

And when was Doctor Who all about "me and me mates". What now she's a woman she can't go off into dangerous situations by herself "without her mates". What, are perilous life threatening plots like going to the loos in a night club now? "can't go without me mates!"

Well tonight I 'm going to try and find some Sarah Jane Adventures to watch to try and purge it from my mind. You know it's bad when a spin off of the actual programme is a thousand times better than the actual main series.... now JW could learn a thing or two on "how to act" from the amazing Elisabeth Sladen.

MargueritaPink · 02/01/2019 09:32

I thought they were both made of wood in that scene. Yazz is by far and away the worst actor although the actor playing the male dig assistant ran her a close second.

The "me and me mates" stuff is cringe-making.

Thesnobbymiddleclassone · 02/01/2019 09:43

I've caught up on the episode now.

It's better than some in the series but still a disappointment and just leaves me with a few questions:

  • Why does Jodie needs so many companions to back her up? The series had the three of them and this episode they added three more. It's not needed. She's great and her and Walsh bounce off of each other nicely. The other ones just aren't needed.
  • I don't really get what the purpose was of Ryan's dad? The story was just there for no reason and the other archeologist could have been the host for the dalek at the end and the story wouldn't have changed.
  • Is UNIT now not coming back also? I know Chibnall wants to create new things, but what makes Doctor Who work is the fact that it integrates both the new and the old together. Even after 55 years, you still need to have a bit of the old for continuity and familiarity.
Thesnobbymiddleclassone · 02/01/2019 09:46

@MargueritaPink She used to be in Hollyoaks and was awful then! If anything, her acting has become worse

MargueritaPink · 02/01/2019 12:00

You are right. There is an interaction between them which is lacking with the other 2.

Samcro · 02/01/2019 16:18

we rewatched some old stuff last week. it was so much better.
I felt like its all gone a bit soapy. and too many people going in the tardis.
wouldn't it end up all over social media? also after the woman/darlek killed policeman and other people. wouldn't she be in big trouble????

beenandgoneandbackagain · 03/01/2019 11:06

Finally watched it on catch up. The Ryan and Ryan's Dad interminable conversation seemed to have been spliced in from Eastenders.

Also, could the script writers have a side character who isn't always "incidentally gay" the security guard having a boyfriend was nothing more than virtue signalling, remind the writers/casting agents that in the UK it is okay to have two people of the same skin colour and opposite sex in a relationship. It's like an am-dram version of "tick the diversity boxes".

Some better actors and a new script writer might help too.

Like many others I really want this Doctor to be good, but she's being held back by the rubbish script, and the way the writers are (unwittingly?) making her conform to feminine stereotypes.

SoupDragon · 03/01/2019 13:43

Most things bounce off wood.

SoupDragon · 03/01/2019 13:45

It is really interesting how we all view the actors and characters differently though. I genuinely think the Ryan/Dad scene was good (although totally unnecessary for the programme) and I put Bradly firmly at the bottom of the heap when it comes to acting skills.

beenandgoneandbackagain · 03/01/2019 14:20

The Ryan/Dad scene was okay - but I think that most mediocre actors can do the intense emotional scenes okay and struggle with more nuanced delivery. That's where the acting really falls down. Ryan was an okay actor with the blind girl in a previous episode, but elsewhere is awful.

Actually - nuance - that is what the entire series and acting within it has lacked!

MargueritaPink · 03/01/2019 15:24

Yes, that was so heavy handed. And the couple on the dig were of course of different ethnicities as well.

Frozenteatowel · 03/01/2019 15:50

To me they all act like planks of wood. JW is like a piece of wood that’s been activated by a Duracell battery.

ISaySteadyOn · 03/01/2019 18:45

The lady first possessed by the Dalek was Barbara from Call the Midwife, wasn't she?

KnockMeDown · 05/01/2019 10:28

Crikey Isay you're right! I thought she looked familiar, but couldn't place her. And I'm a keen CTM watcher.

Thanks for that Grin
