I so need a thread where I can talk about this drama and what happened. It was so good. I think the drama and the actors deserve an award.

EvilRingahBitch Stella Rimmington's books are ghost written Shock
Shock Shock.
That's ruined them!

Actually this is my favourite tv of the year. I want to love Eve more than Villenelle but she is just so fabulous. I thought the accent was dodgy but then heard a real Russian speaking and realised it was spot on.

SubtitlesOn · 10/10/2018 15:12

Looked on IMDb and Sandra Oh doesn't have any mention of filming 2nd series yet SadSadSadSadSad

Wolfiefan · 10/10/2018 15:30

Dammit. IMDB showed 9 episodes. I thought they hadn’t put the last one on the box set. I was wrong. Series 2 episode 1 2019.
Can’t wait.

SubtitlesOn · 10/10/2018 16:28

Oh ok, I see what IMDb have done

Sandra Oh isn't mentioned in cast for 2019 SadSadSad

So when I looked her up it didn't say 2nd series

Really hope the same actors are in series 2

Wolfiefan · 10/10/2018 16:40

What? They can’t make it without her surely???

Furrycushion · 10/10/2018 18:59

According to DigitalSpy they are currently filming & she is in it.

MarcieBluebell · 23/10/2018 02:01

I don't get it. What was the point in a whole series but not find out anything really.

I'm soooo confused. Surely some questions should be answered???!!!

superoz · 25/10/2018 00:28

Just finished watching entire series - loved it. My favourite Villanelle expression is the sulky child face.
I think Konstantin may well be brought back in season 2. We didn’t actually see him die?
One thing irked me when Anna shot herself, Villanelle didn’t really react. Whereas when she was asked about Anna in an earlier episode (the psych assessment) she looked quite emotional.
Why did Eve look so shocked after stabbing Villanelle?
I still miss Bill, he was the best character!

MarcieBluebell · 25/10/2018 03:16

I miss Bill too. I like the other dude though who is the son.

I know it sounds weird but I really like the name villainelle but obviously it's for villains. It's cute though!

LittleBookofCalm · 25/10/2018 07:07

Eve wasnt a killer, so I guess that is why she looked shocked.

Thymeout · 25/10/2018 09:18

They had already planned a second series before filming the first. That's why the last episode seemed odd to those who were expecting answers. I liked it because I didn't want a steamy sex scene and it showed that Eve has a steely core. She was avenging Bill, as she said she'd do after the funeral. Her panic afterwards was because she's not a natural born killer like Villanelle. I loved her 'Rude' comment.

Don't bother with the books. I downloaded the first on to my Kindle and it doesn't read like a proper book. It was an e-book, which I think means almost the same as 'self-published'? Due credit to the author for coming up with the concept and some ingenious ways of killing people, but it's not a patch on the series.

My son saw them filming in Bloomsbury the other day. The meeting room in the first episode with the croissants was shot in Senate House. (As was the auditorium bomb scene in Bodyguard.)

I love this series. I've watched it twice and it's even better second time around.

DarlingNikita · 26/10/2018 15:22

Carolyn takes phone with few words, after she hangs up her son says 'Konstantin?', she says 'yes'
I think she says 'I'm afraid so,' which I assumed meant he was dead; but then again seeing as it's Carolyn, who is expert at evasion, maybe not!

Thyme, the books were originally self-published but then snapped up by John Murray, who are a pretty solid mainstream publisher. I don't know if they just printed them and stuck jackets on them or if they actually tinkered with the content.

'e-books' isn't a synonym for 'self-published'; 'proper' publishers almost all publish e-books nowadays along with hard-copy books. Although it's true that many independent authors ie those not published by a house do publish electronically only.

nowifi · 26/10/2018 22:17

Thought it was the best thing I've watched in ages, but then I think that about everything Phoebe Waller Bridge has done, loved 'Fleabag' and 'Crashing', just heard she isn't writing series 2 so fear it won't be as good but then the 2nd series usually aren't as good as the first anyway, will still be watching!

Thymeout · 27/10/2018 06:46

Darling - thanks for that. I've never had much success with 'original' e-books on Kindle. Still struggling with this one. Not sure what's wrong with it. It's curiously flat on the page, like an extended synopsis, with a bit of description stuck in here and there. The product placement is v irritating. Every item of clothing has a designer attribution. I get the impression that the author has watched a lot of boxed sets but hasn't read very many books.

A580Hojas · 27/10/2018 07:01

I really enjoyed this series up to the point where Eve got out of the car when they were all being shot at by Villanelle in the countryside. Then the suspension of disbelief being asked of us from that point on just got too irritating. I could not bloody stand Eve by the end of it. Where was this so-called obsession conjured up from? A pile of old twaddle but yes if course I'll watch series 2 😆.

Thymeout · 27/10/2018 07:47

A580 I think we need to know more about Eve's back story to answer your question. We know far more about Villanelle's. Perhaps in the second series? There was all that private research - not part of her job - she'd done into female assassins before Villanelle really came on to the radar, which got her the job with Carolyn.

They'd already met in the hospital bathroom and then there was the present of the perfect clothes and 'Sorry, baby', which may have given her the idea of a personal connection which would protect her when she got out of the car?

I think one of the reasons a second viewing works better is that it takes you some time to work out which genre you're dealing with. It's quite ground-breaking in that respect. Black comedy? Thriller spoof? But then all that changes with Bill.

It's quite subtle the way Villanelle's mother obsession is built up. When she's out walking with Sebastian, she turns her head when a passerby with the same length hair-style as Anna and Eve catches her eye. And there's the American tourist of a certain age. And the drawing of a faceless woman which upset her at the psychiatrist's. I think she was too young when her mother died to remember her face.

I loved the 'fruit cake in the freezer' detail. That was a dead give-away about Frank's 'mother'. No English woman would freeze fruitcake. Villanelle seems to have twigged that it was a bum note.

The awful child was genius. Hope we see more of her.

TigerDroveAgain · 27/10/2018 08:00

Loved the series but like PP I have some unanswered questions.

Did anyone else see this tweet by Jodie Comer twitter.com/jodiecomer/status/1046455000715730950?s=21. Must have been very tempting to tap him on the shoulder and raise an eyebrow Halloween Grin

Belindabauer · 27/10/2018 08:04

I loved this.

A580Hojas · 27/10/2018 09:58

I didn't think Villanelle's interest in women with long dark curly hair was done all that subtley tbh - she turned and looked back at a number of random women passing her in the street. But the thing I don't buy is Eve's fascination with HER. But then I don't believe in the concept of sudden obsessive overwhelming fascination with another person at all so I guess that's why I find it difficult to go along with.

Also, according to the old lady V had been away from her apartment for weeks or months but then she just happens to return 10 minutes after Eve gets let in? Nah.

DarlingNikita · 27/10/2018 10:48

Thymeout, it's true that a lot of independent authors are independent because no reputable publisher or agent will touch them with a bargepole...

I didn't know Luke Jennings was a ghostwriter. I haven't read the Stella Rimington books so I don't know if I think he's any good. I would have thought he'd have to be quite decent as she's a) a big name and b) published by a big publisher.

In his 'day job' he's the dance critic for either the Guardian or Observer, I don't know which, so he must have some writing skills at least, although I know critical writing isn't the same as novel-writing.

I might try a Villanelle book now out of interest!

Thymeout · 27/10/2018 22:40

Darling. Just had a Google. There's a scathing review of Stella Rimington's first thriller, mentioning LJ but saying that it's not clear how much of the writing is his. There's also LJ's own account of working with P W-B on. the series and how he came to write his novellas.

It's only £3.99 on Kindle. Have you read Mick Herron's Slough House series? In much the same vein as P W-B's. Light years ahead of LJ's effort.

Sarcelle · 27/10/2018 22:57

Jodie C was mesmerising. I found Sandra Oh less believable, strange casting. As was her 118 118 husband.

The whole series was amazing with the exception of the last one, which was pants.

I am looking forward to S2 but dreading it too. I think it will be shite like the last episode.

YuhBasic · 27/10/2018 23:12

It was brilliant.

I assume that the old lady called Villanelle’s “people” (dont rheyboay her to keep an eye out?) and they whisked her away. She could hardly stumble off to the nearest hospital.

Loved Konstantin’s annoying genius daughter. I’m sure I recognise her but can’t place from where.

YuhBasic · 27/10/2018 23:13
  • they pay
Thymeout · 28/10/2018 06:05

Sarcelle It was made by BBCAmerica, which is an odd arrangement between the BBC and one of the U.S. cable companies, which is why It was screened there first. It was conditional on having an American actress in one of the 2 leading roles. I've never seen Sandra Oh before, but I thought she was fantastic.

It's a different story arc if it's the last episode of Series One with Series Two already written and in the pipeline. The only thing that's pants is having to wait till 2019 for the next episode.
