@mogloveseggs*

I always watch them individually on you tube dwts channel. I have seen a youtube live stream in the past but it was always at 3am

On that channel there is a week one playlist (all 14 videos) if that helps. I miss my crush Tom Bergeron but needs must.

It makes a difference to enjoyment coffee I think...Strictly this week I know 11/15 but Stateside I knew 4/13 and that's been the case with the DWTS music for a while now.

I thought the whole point of no elimination in Week 1 was so they all got a chance to show both ballroom and Latin? Seems like they're playing to Dr Ranj's strengths a bit by giving him Latin again, I do like him but I'm not sure that's fair.

Speaking of ballroom/Latin - which do Charleston and jive come under? Ive never been sure.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 25/09/2018 21:29

I think Charleston and Jive are generally lumped in with Latin, mostly because they are clearly not ballroom. I think of them as more similar to Latin because they are fast and not in hold, like the Samba and Salsa.

HumbleCrumble · 25/09/2018 21:30

Thank you! It's always confused me because they didn't seem to quite fit with either but that makes sense.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 25/09/2018 21:34

I'm pretty sure that the Charleston doesn't exist on the competition circuit, it was added to Strictly as an audience pleaser because it's jaunty. So it isn't really latin either, but it's less different from latin than it is from ballroom.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 25/09/2018 22:38

Jive is one of the five international Latin American dances in Dancesport. Smile

Standard: Waltz, Tango, Viennese Waltz, Foxtrot, Quickstep
Latin American: Cha cha, Samba, Rumba, Paso Doble, Jive

The others are just extras, or some are from American Smooth and Rhythm, which is competitive ballroom with a different set of dances.

xsquared · 25/09/2018 23:35

Giving Dr Ranj Salsa must have something to do with Janette not being able to choreograph ballroom very well.

xsquared · 25/09/2018 23:39

Quite daring for Katie to do Paso on week 2. Gorka seems to have a tradition of doing Paso early on
In the series.

I hope Vick does better with a ballroom dance. I think it will suit her long willowy limbs.

Looking forward to it!

CoffeeShortbread · 26/09/2018 08:53

Not knowing the music definitely makes a difference, mozzie. There’s a lot of what looks like recent chart stuff in there so Confused. Plus, I always thing Dave Arch and co make a bit a of a hash of the clubby stuff.

ppeatfruit · 26/09/2018 09:25

Ref Cotton eyed Joe. I LIKE it!! Blush I meant to say earlier that is was KATE not Katie who refused to wear a wig. Room for confusion there donchya know Grin.

MrsJayy · 26/09/2018 12:10

Charelston was dropped in a few years back to lighten it up a bit the Jive is an afro/american dance so it doesn't fit latin either. I agree with a pp they used to do week about with Ballroom/Latin now they are doing any old thing Hmm

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 26/09/2018 12:17

I used to like the way it was in the beginning with half of them doing the same ballroom and the other half doing the same latin. As it is now people, even quite good people, often go out on a samba or a rumba because they are less appealing dances, if you are the only person doing a rumba that week then worry. If half of the cohort were doing the same dance then you only have concentrate on not being the worst samba/rumba.

MrsJayy · 26/09/2018 12:21

Well exactly least you knew where you were it seemed a competition .

MrsJayy · 26/09/2018 12:22

A fairer competition*

CoffeeShortbread · 26/09/2018 13:13

Yes, mrsJayy. Much more about entertainment than dancing.

ppeatfruit · 26/09/2018 14:50

But if you're a good ballroom dancer and a rubbish Latin dancer or vice versa what used to happen? Did the winner have to be best at both?

MrsJayy · 26/09/2018 15:31

I think it worked out on average iyswim winners were never great on both I think it has gone a bit xfactor the producers work out their favourites to shine

SchadenfreudePersonified · 26/09/2018 16:04

I have conferred with my teen DCs on whether they are familiar with Cotton Eye Joe and after singing three separate comedy parody versions they admitted familiarity with the original.

So my theory still stands: the blindfolded dart-throwing monkeys picking music for Joe are specifically focussing on a rather narrow subsection of pop in the Venn diagram overlap between 70s-90s kitsch pop classics which will appeal to the core SCD audience and the heavily memed and parodied musical currency of the Youtube generation. Put your money on Africa, Never Gonna Give You Up and You Spin Me Round.
