Apparently she called Charley the N word in a 'joking manner' whilst they were dancing and was chucked out at 3 in the morning.

Stupid, silly naive girl

Brill post beetle bug & I agree milk chocolate, the music industry has a duty, hip hop is no longer a form of rebellion, it is a leading influential music genre and has a duty to be wary of the message it is sending. As another aside, jamaican artists are now banned from using a certain word which is offensive to homosexuals. The radio stations won't play it. Infact, they don't play songs with swear words either, no matter what time of the day!

Oncebitten · 08/06/2007 11:30

Ought to go do some house work now!!!

plummymummy · 08/06/2007 11:31

That's good. I still remember that interview with Buju Banton where he was trying to defend that track "Boom bye bye"

Oncebitten · 08/06/2007 11:34

Yes plummy mummy, Sizzla is not allowed in the UK because of his homophobic beliefs and his reluctance to keep them to himself but that is a whole other thread!

DebitheScot · 08/06/2007 11:35

I was expecting to find a thread on this this morning but didn't expect it to be quite so big. I have skim read the bits after 10pm last night (didn't see the point in reading the earlier stuff as the media reports during the day yesterday turned out to have the context all wrong).

What shocked me the most was that it was in part of a normal conversation and it slipped off the tongue so easily. I think that is almost worse than if she'd said it in a heated arguement as when you are arguing you might say words that you don't really mean just to piss that person off.
I just can't understand how it was in her vocab and not something that she knew about but is at the back of her mind because it's not something that comes up day to day.
When she was in the diary room being told off she appeared to genuinelly have no idea how bad the word is. She seemed to be very nieve (sp??), esp for someone who appears to be quite intelligent.
Does this mean that it's noones fault because we noone ever told her because its not something that is discussed or does it mean that her parents/teachers/friends or whoever are at fault for allowing her to use the word and not explaining how bad it is.
We obviously don't know the answer to that.

I also think that maybe because it is such a bad insult that it doesn't get mentioned at all anywhere and so 'young' people don't ever hear the word except as a lyric in hiphop music and so don't know it's a wrong word.

I think they had to chuck her out because of the Shilpa thing. If that hadn't happened she would maybe just have been severly punished (although the response when she was evicted would have been huge probably).
And I think they probably kicked her out then because Charley was obviously still bothered about it and discussing it.

I'm not a big Charley fan as she always stirs things and makes big deals out of things and wants to be centre of attention but I did feel for her last night. I think that the more she thought about what had been said the more she realised that it had actually offended her. Also she has no idea what Emily is like in 'real life'. For all she knows Emily could be a racist.

Well I'm sure some of this has already been covered but I wanted to add my bit anyway

LieselVentouse · 08/06/2007 11:37

This debate is good - its even got me thinking about things I might say in jest that unknown to me are deeply offensive - although I would never dream of using the N word I do have a couple of Welsh friends and I have jokingly called them something that I now beleive might be v. offensive.

kel4mum · 08/06/2007 11:38

Just spoken to dp about this thread and he asked me to ask if anyone knows about The Barbery Coast Pirates? Apperently this never gets taught in history either.

DebitheScot · 08/06/2007 11:39

I do actually personally think she should have been kicked out regargless of the Shilpa thing but I don't know if BB would have kicked her out. Thats what I meant in that bit in my previous post.
I sat in shock for ages after seeing it as I was horrified.

Her parents must be mortified.

calordan · 08/06/2007 11:39

Did anyone see the show balderdash and piffle about the origin of words, it was talking about reclaiming the word c*t, I normally wouldnt have a problem typing or saying that word but I am aware it might offend others. Basically it was saying that the oppressors (men) gave the power to the word but we as women were overthrowing that meaning and turning it against ment to shock and belittle them, before anyone has a hissy fit, I dont think you can do the same for (N)maybe cos if anyone called me a c*t I wouuld not be offended, but if I heard (N) said in any context I would be offended, why is that?

BeetleBug · 08/06/2007 11:41

KerryMum 'This comes down to education not only at home but also in schools, churches, community centres, etc.' I completely agree with you 100 percent.

PlummyMummy and Oncebitten, the Sizzla and Buju Banton thing. I this the use of the N word would be easier to solve!

Mercy · 08/06/2007 11:46

Ke4mum, I know a (very) little bit about the Barbary coast Pirates - but I certainly didn't learn about the situation at school

Backtobasics · 08/06/2007 11:49

Do you think it would have been as offensive if black person said it? I mean is it because it was the word nigger or is it because it was a white girl saying it?

milkchocolate · 08/06/2007 11:52

Maybe Emily's parents should be mortified, but it again refers back to the same issue of education. What are we taught, and what one should and should not say out loud. Who knows what people say at home but would not dream of saying in public. I think one have to show consistency. If you listen to rap at home, refer to people in such and such way, be it racist or homophobic, you cant expect your children to go out and NOT do it. Children need to learn right and wrong behaviour from a very early age, and the parents need to set the example. This is not just about one unfortunate silly girl saying the wrong word to the wrong person, it transcends it, I think. It is about how we, as parents, educate our children to become moral and aware young citizens, how we equip them to deal with life and interpret life.

calordan · 08/06/2007 11:52

Emily did say on BB that the word had already been used, by somebody else and charley said yeah her, but I think that Emilys attitude of not thinking she'd done anything wrong was at least partly responsible for her being chucked

Backtobasics · 08/06/2007 11:55

Charlie tried to be nice about it and said she wasn't offended but you could see she was reall offended.

DebitheScot · 08/06/2007 11:56

In newsbeat on radio 1 yesterday someone was talking about the fact that some black people do use the word when referring to other black people in a non-offensive way yet it is very offensive for a white person to use it.

Its kind of like the thing that was mentioned earlier about the girls chasing Ziggy to get his shorts off. That was portrayed as being a bit of fun but if it had been the other way round the guys would be kicked out and up in court for sexual abuse. Not fair surely??

Backtobasics · 08/06/2007 11:56

If a black person called me racist names it wouldn't bother me.

Backtobasics · 08/06/2007 11:58

Debithescot, i said that too. Double standards or what eh. They would never let a load of lads try and remove a womans clothes!

LieselVentouse · 08/06/2007 11:58

I would be highly offended if someone called me a c*

Backtobasics · 08/06/2007 12:00

i would offended too but c* isn't a rasist word. I don't know any rasist words towards a white person actually?

calordan · 08/06/2007 12:01

Would you be offended because they are trying to offend you or because it is an offensive word,

Backtobasics · 08/06/2007 12:02

C**t in not a nice word for anyone to use. It''s quite vile actually.

kel4mum · 08/06/2007 12:02

I was called a honky once. I wasnt offended because the person that said it was immature.

FlossALump · 08/06/2007 12:03

Either the word should be used by everybody or nobody. One group claiming they can use it while another can not is divisive and not progressive.

milkchocolate · 08/06/2007 12:06

I have been called: Scandinavian C*, which I found highly offencive, actually doubly offencive as it was making a point about my heritage too. But I guess it is not a standardized white racist term....
