Apparently she called Charley the N word in a 'joking manner' whilst they were dancing and was chucked out at 3 in the morning.

Stupid, silly naive girl

milkchocolate - I think maybe you are saying that the so called "under-class" are more likely to verbalise racist attitudes than their upper-middle counterparts? I don't know how true that is, but certainly I don't believe that unspoken racist views are harmless.

TaylorsMummy · 08/06/2007 10:39

but your saying not using it is giving it more power to hurt and harm.that is not what you are being told by people directly effected by it.it's not on,really. are you irish? (going by your name) if i kept saying to you,oh,it's fine, paddy, pikey whatever it is people call the irish and you said to me no it's not but i continued to say it's fine, you'd be a little bit annoyed, wouldn't you? seriously

Thelittlesoldiersmummy · 08/06/2007 10:39

Watching it yesterday was not comfortable Charley was offended by it and was n shock she seem to get more and more upset about it! I hope Emily is made to watch it back and is show that it was not a joke and no one thought it was funny!

ok,lets agree to disagree.i would not dream of using the word.i could not even type it.but if that is your view, then fine.i'd just be careful who you air that view to.

Oncebitten · 08/06/2007 10:43

Concious (sp) black people are making real efforts to try and stop this 'mindless labelling'. It matters not that it appears to be said in 'fondness'. It is this mindless spouting of the word, which has allowed Emily and her friends to call it each other and think it is ok. It is not OK. It is ignorance. Perhaps this debate is good in that EVERYBODY (black people included) who do use the term will think twice about...

persephonesnape · 08/06/2007 10:43

All it takes, though, taylors mummy is one kid overhearing some rap music, asking what a n**r is and their parents replying, ?oh, it?s a black person? without a full explanation for it to catch on in the playground. I don?t think Glasgow is breeding mini Klan members, we?re all to busy hating people for religious reasons, never mind skin colour. (?)

I think the reclamation thing loses it?s argument here, because children are confused by the use of the word, that it?s acceptable as a pride thing in certain sections of the black community, but not others. That it?s a word white people just can?t say. .

Me: Please don?t say that - it?s wrong to use words that are hurtful. Black people don?t like that word because white people in America used it during slavery when black people were stolen from their homes and shipped halfway across the world to be kept in chains and used as slaves.

Son: but if it?s hurtful why do black people use it?

Me: it?s ironic.

Son: what?s irony?

Me: phone your dad and ask him.

You can't seriously lump those names together. Do u know how many people died during slavery? A period when people were called the N word with hatred and despise.

kel4mum · 08/06/2007 10:48

Oncebitten My 7 year old ds has learned all about slavery and Martin Luther King. It is part of history lessons in my dc school. We live in north london, i dont know if that makes a difference. All children should learn about this part of our history as it teaches them to have respect for other cultures.

Taylorsmummy we cant protect our children all the time from hearing bad language or racists comments, we can only teach them that they are wrong.

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 08/06/2007 10:48

Having watched it now.. and not to condone Emily's use of the word one bit (see further down the thread for my views on that!).. but did anyone think that how Charlie got "more and more bothered" by it as time went on was her clocking how it was actually going to be percieved by BB (and wider audience) and how she could actually blow it up as much as possible.. and gain from it?

It was always going to be a big deal, someone using that word.. but I could almost see Charlie's devious little mind ticking over as to how to get the "best outcome" from it!

Even without the stupid racist remark, I did not like Emily, but I like Charlie even less. She portrays herself as hard and rough. And this is not a classist comment (hardly!).. it's about how she expresses herself.. and her constant "me me ME!" speech patterns.

plummymummy · 08/06/2007 10:49

I do see your point but why would anyone use the former description you used without qualifying it. I can't imagine saying that to a child if asked what it meant. I would say something like "it is a very nasty word used to describe a black person and please don't ever use it as it will really upset them and lots of other people too".

Thats brilliant Kelsmum. I think that, that is the way forward...

Mercy · 08/06/2007 10:51

Kel4mum - absolutely.

Does a lot of rap music really use that word? (I don't listen to it so I don't actually know)

Oncebitten · 08/06/2007 10:52

Yeah kerrys mum and lets all wear a burberry cap for the chavs that have been thrown overboard in the atlantic...

yes, its used constantly in rap music.

DrNortherner · 08/06/2007 10:53

Charley kept going on about it though to the other housemates, then when they displayed shock at it she tried to play it down, saying 'don't over react' it's fine, not racist etc etc.

Maybe she wanted Emily evicted?

FWIW Emily showed herself up to be a stupid little girl and she deserved to go. Did you notice she only said sorry after she knew she was being evicted?

Mercy · 08/06/2007 10:53

But in the UK?
