Just gets better and better

Didn’t expect the explosion

Did expect the shagging

Moving school for his son was a nice touch

Yes would have thought buildings be bugged

Car scene very good. Impressive camera work with phone to spot the sniper. His friend

So it’s now complex

He is paid to protect the woman he hates but is falling in love with her

Or at least lusts and shags her

Deliphant · 28/08/2018 16:11

Watched both episodes last night - it was great.
Shagging v predictable - DH had just said ' I think he'lll kill her, bit not before he's shagged her ', next scene - he shags her.

His ex was in Jamestown, also the bloke picking up the sacked assistant was the blacksmith in Jamestown..given he's a known face will probably have a bigger part down the line.

Wondering whether the beeb are sponsored by Landrover? Every time they have a bit where important people need transporting around they're in black Rangerovers. There are surely other big cars??

namechangedcausebored · 28/08/2018 16:17

Thanks everyone, I’ll watch the episode without him I think - he’s only a month off 14, but really enjoys this style of programme and film genre.

DoryNow · 28/08/2018 16:33

Following closely. Smile

I think the PTSD is hidden because he has never sought official help for it, his wife had had enough of his temper & drinking & threw him out & his mate ( the sniper) told him to get help but he said no as he needed to work for his kids. He's managed to keep it under wraps at work but you could see he nearly unravelled at key times but actually doing some action hero stuff seemed to help him function.

He drove Lavender out of the immediate line of fire & got the back up car to guard her as he went into firearms officer mode
" Look after the P" (Principle.)

There always seemed to be a back up Range Rover with driver & female cop who calls him Skipper & she was with him in the restaurant earlier too.

I think the connection with the sniper may not come to light as they found no ID or evidence of military connections according to someone later, but you'd think they'd do DNA or teeth or something. I suppose he was so paranoid he may well have somehow got rid of his records?

Gina M's character hates Julia for taking the train bomber investigation away from the anti-terrorist police & giving it to the SS so possibly she delayed getting ARV's there to frighten her? Is she secretly leaking stuff?

The arsey PA who got sacked comes from a rich family I read in the blurb about the characters on the BBC website ( I am that sad person who likes to know all about the characters!!) so I guess Daddy makes sure she has a minder maybe? Think she'll be back somehow.

bakingdemon · 28/08/2018 16:50

Man, this was so good!

Can't wait for them to ID the sniper and link to Sgt Budd - I guess given the guy had no criminal record his DNA wouldn't be on any database. Presumably they'll identify his scars as being caused by shrapnel and then ask the military for help - although I did read that the MoD is reluctant to allow their database to be used for that as soldiers give their DNA so their bodies can be identified if they're killed in action.

Really want to know more about this black Land Rover picking up the useless assistant.

And when Julia said to the head of MI5 something about holding up her end of the bargain, what did she mean? Do they have material they'll use to discredit the PM so she can take his place?

Gersemi · 28/08/2018 17:41

Could it be the sacked PA who leaked the information about the school? Or is she going to be made the scapegoat for the leak?

KnotsInMay · 28/08/2018 17:48

"I don't mind a subtle sex scene but she's so frumpy looking it was just plain weird. Bit like when a tipsy auntie starts dancing with the youngsters at a wedding night do" You think? Bit of older woman prejudice there? Men often, OFTEN , have affairs with older women.

Blondeshavemorefun · 28/08/2018 18:02

episode 1 recap

Blondeshavemorefun · 28/08/2018 18:04

Love the guardian recaps of series

episode 2 recap

NicoAndTheNiners · 28/08/2018 18:05

Well I wouldn’t call Keeley Hawes frumpy.

Gingertam · 28/08/2018 18:48

Agree Nico. Shocked that people are calling the beautiful Keeley frumpy.

PollyFlinderz · 28/08/2018 19:03

I could binge watch this very easily given the chance!!!

Fabulous.

Oh and that look on the bombers face just as the bomb went off. Its enough to give you nightmares!!!!

placemats · 28/08/2018 19:17

Men often, OFTEN , have affairs with older women.

They most certainly do. Wink

dracolovesharry · 28/08/2018 19:18

Loved it but annoyed at the usual broken marriage trope. Every single time.

FawnDrench · 28/08/2018 19:20

The driver who picked up sacked Chanel was definitely at the veterans meeting so he has been a serving soldier at least, and will feature again imho.

TooTrueToBeGood · 28/08/2018 19:21

Agree Nico. Shocked that people are calling the beautiful Keeley frumpy.

In the context of the sex scene she did come across as being a bit reserved and awkward. I assume Ms Hawes was playing it that way as directed. I thought it was quite authentic. The character was a career politician who'd just witnessed someone being murdered right in front of her. I think we were meant to see someone desperately needing intimacy and human connection for emotional reasons rather than a frantic shag for the fun of it.

ChiaraRimini · 28/08/2018 19:49

Bullet proof glass is used in government cars so the driver couldn't have been shot.
Close protection officer shouldn't have left the principal to go running after the shooter?
Wish I had a hot young man to keep me safe -and shag me senseless- though

NicoAndTheNiners · 28/08/2018 20:20

Yes it was a bit unrealistic the car shooting scene I thought. No point in having bullet proof body work if you can smash/shoot out a window as all you have to do is shoot the driver and then if the person is hiding in the footwell walk up to the car and stick your gun through the smashed window and shoot them. Didn’t make sense.

TooTrueToBeGood · 28/08/2018 20:22

Bullet proof glass is used in government cars so the driver couldn't have been shot.

There was a program on one of the obscure channels (Quest maybe) about bullet proof glass recently. The stuff they fit to viewing windows on tanks and armoured fighting vehicles can stop high calibre machine gun and sniper rifle rounds but it's several inches thick. The glass you can reasonably fit to cars will stop rounds from regular pistols/assault rifles but a few in the same area will breach it. Assuming the shooter was using a high calibre weapon with appropriate amunition it's entirely possible the druver could have been shot.

It's only a drama anyway. A bit of theatrical license within reason doesn't do any harm.

BagelGoesWalking · 28/08/2018 20:43

Review on both episodes. The comments are the best bit 😬 www.google.co.uk/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2018/aug/27/bodyguard-recap-series-one-episode-two-genuinely-edge-of-the-sofa-tv

Optimist1 · 28/08/2018 21:35

The problem I had with the shooting, apart from the non-bullet-proof glass, was that a lone gunman was able to shoot the stationary vehicle from so many different angles - front, back, sides.

MissMarplesKnitting · 28/08/2018 21:40

Well if it's anything like LoD there'll be more twists than a 1960s nightclub...

Graphista · 28/08/2018 21:46

Someone made a comment on guardian - anyone seen Arlington road? A twist like that could be interesting.

LadyDuplo · 28/08/2018 21:47

Chiara my Dh said exactly the same about David/ Dave leaving her to go after the sniper. He's paid to protect her, so shouldn't have left her. Apparently it's the back up people in the Land Rover that should have gone into Pascoe House.

Graphista · 28/08/2018 21:47

I don't think it's an age thing, I'm bi myself and a good few lesbian as well as male friends and I don't know anyone that finds keeley sexy. Pretty, glamorous yes but in a weirdly asexual way. Even her sex scenes in other work are just awkward and uncomfortable imo.

Dramatic licence yes but as tootrue also says its not as simple as that irl either. 'Bulletproof' materials would be more accurately described as 'bullet resistant' and it depends on the bullet and the gun. 'Bulletproof' metal (which can be used in car chassis) can be made to be more effective than 'bulletproof' glass. Nothing is completely bulletproof, keep at it at the same point, keep weakening the material and you'll eventually get through.

As I said I'm from a military family, I remember anxiously talking to dad after we'd had a nearby IRA bombing if all the precautions we were taking and the army were taking would work. He was honest with me 'it reduces the risk, but if someone is determined they can get through or around any measures you take.'
