Hi all

Here is the next thread for those who are watching The Handmaid's Tale Season 2 on Channel 4. Please don't put any spoilers on this - the other thread (for those in other countries who are watching ahead of the UK) is:

In the book it would have been a stage name, I think you're right, but in the programme it's her real name and I daren't google to see if it it says Joy was her maiden name or not in case I end up seeing another spoiler.

I think they might end the entire thing with some kind of ambiguity again, as they did with the book.

I can't really see how they can end it in a way that will please everybody.

It may be unlikely for June to escape and have both of her children.

If Gilead falls and she does get both children she still can't have both Luke and Nick, and might not have either.

If she never escapes people will be disappointed.

And if all the major characters survive it will be unrealistic.

There's no clear ending that will suit everyone, so I think they might decide vagueness is better.

@MrStark - I'm glad about that.

Fred might be completely awful, but I'm glad Joseph Fiennes managed to argue that one.

I've read it through TWICE and saw no spoilers for UK Pace - obviously proceed with caution however

seasure · 26/07/2018 20:48

Oh, he argued against raping Serena in Canada because it would taint Fred's character a tad bit too much .

DownyEmerald · 26/07/2018 22:28

Showing my ignorance here but I always assumed that having sex to get labour going was based on the woman having an orgadm, and extra hormones washing around. And in the UK it's pineapples, I didn't know it was mangoes in the States!

Celticlassie · 26/07/2018 23:04

Is it not something to do with the semen? Although nipple stimulation also works apparently which I'd imagine is hormonal.

Aridane · 26/07/2018 23:12

No,spoilers in that article

boatyardblues · 26/07/2018 23:12

Prostaglandins in the semen? I was so overdue with #1 that we did research & tried a lot of folk remedies to try to get things started. The worst idea ever the very hot curry: desperate for the loo with flaming shits, but slowed to a zombie shuffle by the mahoosive bump you are carrying.

Aridane · 26/07/2018 23:15

June should really be on the wall with all her shenanigans

Roussette · 27/07/2018 08:10

Is that...

No spoilers in that article.

Or

No, spoilers in that article (meaning there is?)

EmpressOfSpartacus · 27/07/2018 08:20

I was wondering that too, Roussette.

Aridane · 27/07/2018 08:23

Rogue comma! - there are no spoilers in the article

EmpressOfSpartacus · 27/07/2018 08:59

Thanks Aridane!

Roussette · 27/07/2018 09:07

Smile Thx Aridane

The last rape of June is important, I think.

Waterford and the other Commanders could kid themselves on that what they were doing is not actually rape. That it's sanctioned and demanded by the State. Whereas, that was clearly a power thing - which is a new level of wicked from Waterford.

He's been gradually becoming more and more of a despot.

Serena just wants the baby and rid of June. She's utterly selfish, I don't think she was trying to punish or control June. She sees June as a stroppy, insubordinate nuisance and wants rid of her as soon as possible.

I thought that the Commander had set them up, that he didn't want the baby and orchestrated June being left alone to die with a difficult birth. Having read the thread, though, I'm not so sure - PP have said he's not bright enough, and, I agree. I don't think he'd care whether the baby is actually his, he needs that baby to retain his status.

Also, the garage - is that a modern day stable? Is she going to give birth in there and then three wise men will come along?

And, Emily killed her Commander. For sure. She'll go through a couple more before landing up on the wall, I guess.

Am loving it.

Roll on Sunday.

Oldowl · 27/07/2018 10:18

With the house in the woods so isolated, as seen from the ariel footage, why would there be a patrol in the area?

It must have been a set up by the commander as he knew the address June and Nick would be at and the approximate time Hannah and her Martha would leave the vacinity.

noblegiraffe · 27/07/2018 10:24

I think meeting Hannah in a remote location sanctioned by the commander and driven by Nick was the only way the writers could think of to get June in a position where she wouldn’t give birth in the Waterfords’ house. If she gave birth there, she was screwed - removed and sent to her next posting with no bonding time and no chance of getting the baby out of Gilead.

I’m hoping that June will give birth in isolation, have nice time bonding and breastfeeding with the baby (and plenty of tinned food in the kitchen) and that there will be opportunity for escape.

The only fly in that ointment is that the Commander knows where she is.

TangelasVine · 27/07/2018 11:00

I'm trying to think through all the possibilities. It'd be difficult for him to admit he's let her go out on a trip and let her see her daughter. He'll want to keep his position in Gilead and any admission of rule breaking won't go down well. I suppose he'd have to attempt to fetch her back himself with no one noticing.

EmpressOfSpartacus · 27/07/2018 11:21

I suppose he'd have to attempt to fetch her back himself with no one noticing.

Which will be phenomenally difficult without Nick & the car.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 27/07/2018 11:27

If Emily killed her commander that makes a little more sense of the rather weirdly isolated scenes in the Colonies where we learned that she knows about drugs and is not afraid to use them against people.

TangelasVine · 27/07/2018 11:28

Ah yes forgot they only had one car. Eden will be a problem here too. Doubt she'll go long without reporting Nick's absence

MargoLovebutter · 27/07/2018 11:36

So presumably Nick's car is at the house still?

EmpressOfSpartacus · 27/07/2018 11:36

God yes, Eden's going to assume they've run off together, isn't she?

MargoLovebutter · 27/07/2018 11:36

Sorry, for clarity - presumably Nick's car is still at the house in the woods somewhere? I wonder if he left the key in it?

noblegiraffe · 27/07/2018 11:37

The guys who shot Nick drove off in both cars, so no easy escape for
June.
