Hi all

Here is the next thread for those who are watching The Handmaid's Tale Season 2 on Channel 4. Please don't put any spoilers on this - the other thread (for those in other countries who are watching ahead of the UK) is:

my poor heart cant take anymore of this. i could barely watch the Hannah scene.
I don't think it was Nick who was shot.

psicat · 22/07/2018 22:55

Oh god, I obviously could not help thinking of those poor Mexican children and parents during this episode. I googled to see if there was any positive news happening with that and heard the audio recordings of the children crying for their parents. Only a few seconds but that was enough. Fuck trump, he would 100% be one of these fucking commanders. Not even a true believer but would keep lip service in order to get the power.
Waterford is more intelligent than him (not hard) but has the same self serving narcissistic ideology. Zero empathy for another living thing.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 22/07/2018 22:57

I think Fred is so angry because he feels emasculated because Serena was doing such a great job of being him behind his back. And Serena authorising the female paediatrician was behind his back too. It's like a drip drip of things undermining his power, his authority as a male. June smirking at him and telling him the baby was not his was like a final straw. The rape was his way of regaining power. I suspect he set the whole house thing up too - he knows how much June wants to see her daughter - that is more power he has over her. And then to take her away again. And getting rid of Nick was probably on his list as I think he knows he is the father, and that can't be allowed to get out, it would again be undermining his authority.

Bringonspring · 22/07/2018 22:59

Interesting the set up concept. How many episodes do we have left? Two? I just hope there is some sort of conclusion

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 22/07/2018 23:00

I'm finding it really hard not to Google and find out what happens!

psicat · 22/07/2018 23:03

Three left? Yes normally I completely anti spoiler but I am so tempted (I won't though).

EvilTwins · 22/07/2018 23:11

Just watched it on catchup. I don’t think it was Nick who was shot. I think Nick & the other one shot the third guy and then took the body away.

The bit with Hannah made me cry too.

The rape was totally Serena’s idea. But at the end it looked like she knew she’d gone too far - I’m really hoping she realises that and does something to try to fix it.

Eden has walked into a situation she can’t control. I feel sorry for her. I actually don’t think Nick should treat her differently - she’s a child, and one he did not want to be landed with. If he starts hugging her or whatever, she’ll totally get the wrong idea, which would make it worse. I fear that kiss with Isaac is going to lead to something bad.

TangelasVine · 22/07/2018 23:11

I'm also desperate to find out but won't look. If they are planning on more series it won't be a happy / conclusive ending I imagine.

MrsAidanTurner · 22/07/2018 23:14

Yy, it's All going to be fine spot on!!

Re Serena holding her down to be raped... Serena helped to create this in essence she has slapped, stunned, robbed, kidnapped and held all women down to be raped.. Because this is what she fough for.

I'm intrigued at the next step. High risk pregnancy... Alone.. Have both of them done this to induce her away from aunt Lydia? Or make her have a section then get rid of her??

TheThirdOfHerName · 22/07/2018 23:16

There are 14 episodes, so 4 more left.

Sassenach85 · 22/07/2018 23:17

I'm sure Fred hinted at a superiors at some point that Nick was a great worker and deserved a promotion? Am I making that up?

Him wanting rid of Nick then is supposed to be an obvious point to us? Very possible he set all that up.,... I thought it was him trying to cover his guilt with a warped "treat" as he used to speak to her like that.

Remember in Jezebel club he said he had a treat and it was Moira....

Kitsandkids · 22/07/2018 23:21

The scene with Hannah was heartbreaking. I have a 1 year old daughter and just couldn't imagine being ripped away from her then seeing her again but having to leave her. Absolutely awful.

seasure · 22/07/2018 23:23

Serena is really beyond redemption now

Oldraver · 22/07/2018 23:25

I only caught the very end where June was hugging her daughter.

Does anyone know the timescale form when it all kicked off and June was seperated from her DD at the beginning of Gilead, to the present.

Just how long has it taken to brainwash the country. The scenes in baseball stadium look as though it had been abandoned for years

Flaskfan · 22/07/2018 23:25

I am not in the country for next 2 Sundays. I'm not sure I can cope that long.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 22/07/2018 23:26

m sure Fred hinted at a superiors at some point that Nick was a great worker and deserved a promotion? Am I making that up?

He did. But he was trying to get Nick assigned to a different (higher) job that would mean he's be sent somewhere far away. As I recall he looked a bit miffed when Nick got a wife instead...

iheartmichellemallon · 22/07/2018 23:28

Horrific episode - first time I've cried at an episode when she was saying bye to Hannah. Totally heartbreaking.

Nousernameforme · 22/07/2018 23:30

That entire episode was just brutal. The Hannah visit was important I feel. Now June cannot escape without her. Before in the plane she had said her goodbyes to her left alone even pregnant June has a chance at escape. This will be why she goes back.

I think the guards who got Nick were just told to take whoever was there and as they didn't see June they assumed he was alone. She wasn't supposed to be left behind

MrStarkIDontFeelSoGood · 22/07/2018 23:37

I think it's meant to have been 3 years

June told Emily Hannah would be 8 now.

Terrible foreshadowing earlier with Emily saying aggressively to June

"You think my son remembers me now?!?"

AWomanIsAnAdultHumanFemale · 22/07/2018 23:38

Now June cannot escape without her.

See I thought the opposite. I thought she was satisfying herself that she had told Hannah it was ok to be with her new parents, to be good for them etc, to keep herself safe and also she said “enjoy your life”. I took that as June “settling” Hannah in her new life so she knew it was ok to leave her in gilead if she could.

Flaskfan · 22/07/2018 23:46

I think June accepts (maybe through being around Ede n), that she won't be able to save Hannah, so at least wants her to.survive and to try to adapt enough to get some enjoyment. Hannah obviously learning about Gilead I'm.depth.

boatyardblues · 22/07/2018 23:57

I'm intrigued at the next step. High risk pregnancy... Alone..

Yes, June is in more imminent peril than at any point before. I hope she survives this.

I took Eden and Isaac as showing that the heart wants what the heart wants & any regime that tries to control people’s relationships is on a hiding to nothing. They cannot kill every transgressor without taking the whole society down with them.

Slim pickings in the supermarket too on the heels of the Canadian’s blow-off. Is Gilead on a terminal slide into oblivion?

colouringinagain · 23/07/2018 00:00

June saying goodbye to Hannah is the most heart breaking moment of all.

boatyardblues · 23/07/2018 00:06

Oh FFS! That apostrophe was unforgiveable. Canadians’, not Canadian’s. I will go & stand in the corner.

theanonymum1 · 23/07/2018 00:10

I sobbed at the meeting with Hannah. ‘Did you look for me?’ Broke me. My son is two and I so see how June wanted to give a life times wisdom in ten minutes - enjoy your life, love your parents. How desperate she was to know they were kind to her and having to ask the Martha to love her. That’s what I would want - I thought about it a lot when the news of trump separating families broke. How awful to not even know if someone is being kind to your child.

That scene was some of the best tv I’ve ever seen.

I disagree that the rape was gratuitous. Horrific, yes, but I think it’s like what a P.O. said about Gilead seeming normal now until we saw the juxtaposition with Canada. Rape has become normal in gilead and is ‘just’ the ceremony, but it isnt ‘just’ a ceremony. Rape is rape, and I think that was a brutal reminder of what all these women are experiencing every month. Just because it’s expected and routine and normal now doesn’t mean it should be glossed over, sanitised and tastefully camera-panned-away from if that makes sense.

I also felt for Eden. She’s just a child. I really do think nick could be kind to her, explain even that she is very young and they have a whole lifetime to grow together etc. Not lead her on but not leave her out in the cold.
