I’ve just heard that this will start in the US at the end of this month but Channel 4 haven’t said when they’ll start showing it yet.

Can you imagine what happens to people who aid escapees

After a prominent German in Occupied Czechoslovakia was assassinated, there was a tenuous link to a village and one of the assassins. All the men were shot and the women and children either sent to concentration camps or the children were sent to the homes of SS families to be raised by them.

The entire village was then razed to the ground - Hitler wanted it wiped off the map

I wonder who the person was who was peaking out the window when June was walking. It might not be significant but you never know with this show.

ZibbidooZibbidooZibbidoo · 03/06/2018 23:05

Probably an eye/spy who reported the shifty looking new face.

Apileofballyhoo · 03/06/2018 23:09

I wonder if we will ever find out what happened Omar.

CurbsideProphet · 03/06/2018 23:24

The woman sat behind June on the train also saw her map in the gap between the seats.

Roussette · 03/06/2018 23:29

Diddimus No unfortunately! Can't get to the nest and apparently it's going to get worse, particularly August... it's driving me potty.

AnyFucker · 03/06/2018 23:31

AnyFucker · 03/06/2018 23:32

Oops, just finished.

CurbsideProphet · 03/06/2018 23:33

Thank you AnyFucker!

CurbsideProphet · 03/06/2018 23:33

Will look for it on iplayer!

iheartmichellemallon · 03/06/2018 23:47

Such a tense episode - really hoped she was going to make it.

MrStarkIDontFeelSoGood · 04/06/2018 00:03

On YouTube they have the 30 second promo for next week if anyone's interested you search 2x4 handmaids tale. There's one every week

UrsulaPandress · 04/06/2018 06:28

I thought it might have been the Econowife she had stayed with who was peeping out of the window.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 04/06/2018 07:28

The Econopeople have probably been shown slide shows of smiling Handmaids happily handing over their babies.

ChevalierTialys · 04/06/2018 07:32

What are the distinctions that make people Wives, Econowives, Martha's and Handmaids? I'm reading the book but she doesn't really explain the rules or maybe she does and I'm a bit thick

SoniaShoe · 04/06/2018 07:33

I'm sure there is lots of propaganda to turn the different groups of women against each other. Which is why the econowife had such a negative view about the handmaids. They would have to turn them against each other otherwise there would be more of them trying to help.

Woke up with my head buzzing from last night's episode so I had to read this thread. Such an amazing series!

SoniaShoe · 04/06/2018 07:44

Wives are the wives of the commanders in charge of the regime. The infertile ones have handmaids.

Econowives were married with kids /fertile so they're left to live as families. They have to be first marriage, heterosexual though. And christian.

Marthas i think are no longer fertile but theyve done nothing wrong ie they're straight, compliant Christians. They're trained to be house servants.

Handmaids are fertile women that are not in legitimate relationships ie same sex, second marriage, not married. They got their kids taken from them (if they had any) and they were given to wives to raise. Then they were trained as handmaids.

That's my understanding from the last series and reading the book. But I might have missed something and I'm happy to be corrected.

I'm fascinated with how they mobilised free people into those groups. I hope more of that will be seen in this series. It was great to see how the econo families lived.

theredjellybean · 04/06/2018 08:02

Sonia.. That was my understanding too.
I spend ages thinking what happens to.... Xyz... Scenarios. Such as what about the old and retired...? I'd have gone to colonies as had an affair, now with dp but not married and past fertility. But might have been executed as have signed termination forms as a doctor. However no regime would kill off all the doctors.. They would need some, ditto teachers, accountants, nurses etc.

Cocolepew · 04/06/2018 08:05

I'm always on edge watching this, much more so than the last series.
I'm not 100% sure I'm actually enjoying it! It stresses me out Blush

Processedpea · 04/06/2018 08:08

I agree coco I actually googled last night's ending as I couldn't stand it it's just so grim the first season just seemed more hopeful also where is the end credit soundtrack ?

GandT2 · 04/06/2018 08:17

The Radio 4 Bookclub programme aired yesterday was an interview/Q&A with Margaret Atwood discussing The Handmaid's Tale. It was an interesting listen I thought.

SoniaShoe · 04/06/2018 08:27

theredjellybean there are loads of different real life situations I wonder how it would work in Gilead. I would be destined as a handmaid as we're an unmarried family. But I'm pretty sure I'd end up in the colonies. I'm not sure I'd be strong enough to go along with it and not fight back. But like she said last night, women can adapt to the most extraordinary of situations.

I'm surprised they've put fertile trained handmaids in the colonies (Emily and Janine) as I would have thought they would be a precious resource. Maybe they'll keep them there for a couple of months to break them and then put them back as handmaids.

I'm going to search out the Margaret Attwood interview on iPlayer tonight hopefully it's on there.and the programme on her on BBC1 last night someone mentioned.

CurbsideProphet · 04/06/2018 08:34

@theredjellybean I don't think Gilead would allow women to work, considering all women lost their jobs in the beginning. I would have thought some women would be nurses, possibly in the same vein as the aunts, but not doctors because women can't be seen as an authority on anything?

@Cocolepew I know, it's v stressful Sunday night viewing!

EvilTwins · 04/06/2018 08:43

Are all women banned from reading?

theredjellybean · 04/06/2018 08:45

In the original book.. Yes all women banned from reading. Serena joy had written a book about women's places being in the home and it is on the commanders bookshelf, but she is not allowed to read it
