I’ve just heard that this will start in the US at the end of this month but Channel 4 haven’t said when they’ll start showing it yet.

You've put into words how I was feeling partway through ep1. Some of it seemed... porny. In a sadistic, 'look how much they're suffering' way.

I hope that the intention is to build a sense of darkness before the light.

MyDcAreMarvel · 26/04/2018 22:12

You can watch it on solar in the U.K.

In a few reviews I've read there was mention of the terms Torture and Misery porn in relation to the series.

I personally things that it's far too heavy handed and gratuitous.

I didn't feel that way at all about the first series- sure it was heavy subject matter and wasn't exactly pleasant viewing but this is different.

Destinysdaughter · 27/04/2018 00:20

Have not RTFT cos spoilers. But really really want to see this! Hope it's on C4 in May. It was great to be able to discuss each episode last time with pp here as it was so horrifying yet compelling.

Come on C4!!

PenelopeFlintstone · 27/04/2018 00:21

I also found S2 Ep1 way too much at the start. I could only watch it with one eye, and said to DH that I don't think I'll be able to watch this second series. But it did settle down, thank god. I hope they don't try to beat Series 1 in terms of violence and gore, just to keep ratings high. I'll turn off.

macnab · 27/04/2018 10:35

I'm in Ireland and watched the first 2 episodes of season 2 last night (am exhausted this morning!)

It's so good, I can't wait for it to be aired in the UK so that we can discuss it! Interestingly, Margaret Atwood is listed in the credits I think as an Associate Producer, so I wonder how much input she had?

Like others have said, I don't think this is something I could binge-watch, it was hard enough watching 2 back-to-back, I definitely need time in between episodes to think about it all. It's tough viewing in parts. I think the acting is excellent, the 'aunt Lydia' character in particular is brilliant.

FairfaxAikman · 27/04/2018 13:32

I just watched the first two. Blimey it's good, especially considering it's filling in a massive gap in the source material.

This reply has been deleted

Message deleted by MNHQ as this post did contain some fairly massive spoilers for those in the UK who haven't seen it yet.

What are The Colonies (forgotten the explanation from series 1)

MyDcAreMarvel · 28/04/2018 15:07

I think it’s just a heavily polluted area, so you will die living there very soon.

OohMavis · 28/04/2018 15:16

Colonies are groups of women (and men?) that are surplus to requirement, for example infertile, elderly or disabled, who are put to work. Clearing nuclear waste, farming and generally sustaining the Important People. The nuclear waste colonials die of radioactive poisoning.

OohMavis · 28/04/2018 15:25

In the book it was implied that potential Handmaids were given a choice at the beginning, a life in the Colonies or life as a Handmaid. June mentions that "it isn't really rape, I consented to this, I chose this life" though she does acknowledge it wasn't really a choice, given what a life in the Colonies meant.

In the series it doesn't mention that choice (as far as I remember) and it's portrayed as plain old slavery. It didn't make much sense to me that they'd give them the choice, given that fertile women are so rare and valuable to Gilead in the book, so it makes sense that they made that change imo.
