I’ve just heard that this will start in the US at the end of this month but Channel 4 haven’t said when they’ll start showing it yet.

No, the mock hanging and the other punishments were not conducive to pregnancy/conception. But I don’t think it’s really about that is it. The main aim in gilead is power and when they think it is slipping from their grasp they must act.

If it was just about babies they could use artificial insemination, but they choose to rape. It’s about power.

My DD (aged 14) read the book and enjoyed it, but I've not let her watch it - series 1 - and she's lost interest in watching the new series.

I just found the visual presentation of the story too graphic for my teen - she got the full horror from the book, I just didn't think she needed to see it. I've found the tv series quite scary at times myself.

Morgan · 22/05/2018 22:56

I’ve watched all of season one since yesterday (recovering from a sick bug ) and agree that it seems a little ridiculous punishing the “fertile” ones - hardly conducive to getting pg which would seen imperative given the fertility issues .
I too think we saw AL in that jogging scene - I bought it on Amazon so can check if I know which episode that was in ?
I agree that the pre-scenes are chilling as they do seem close to home somehow .
I cried when Moira met the husband but can’t imagine how they can all have a happy ending even if June escapes what about Hannah ?

Morgan · 22/05/2018 22:58

Also meant to say my DS said he is/might be studying it for A level in Sept

boatyardblues · 22/05/2018 23:03

Ann Dowd is a fantastic actress. Worth watching 'the leftovers' for her alone, if anyone hasn't seen it

I was just about to post the same. Ann Dowd is awesome as Patty Levin in The Leftovers, especially near the end where her role develops significantly (you'll know it when she pops up in the very sharp suit). The woman chews the scenery even when she is silent in a scene. She is a very, very good actress.

boatyardblues · 22/05/2018 23:09

The nurse’s questioning of June - not so far from reality is it?!

DH said it made him feel uneasy too, because you get a lot of that when you are both working full-time and trying to manage poorly kids around work.

DiddimusStench · 23/05/2018 08:56

I saw the torture and scare tactics as a sign that Gilead is losing control. It’s the beginning of their downfall and their frantically grasping to rein the control in

GColdtimer · 23/05/2018 12:07

Totally agree it's not just about making babies. It's all about control. And as people start to rebel they have to tighten their grip.

I’m not sure which rock I’ve been hiding under as this hadn’t been on my radar until I saw my first episode last week, I ended up binge watching the first series on Sky yesterday. Absolutely brilliant series.

papayasareyum · 23/05/2018 13:28

It interests me how Elsabeth Moss, who plays June/Offred squares her beliefs in Scientology (she’s a member of the church of Scientology) with the themes in Handmaids Tale and comparisons between Gilead and Scientology. I believe that Elisabeth Moss responded on this subject via instagram last year, but her response seemed a bit wishy washy.

eloisesparkle · 23/05/2018 16:57

Papyasareyum
Shock I was thinking the same thing.

SomeAreMoreEqualThanOthers · 23/05/2018 16:59

Just watching S2 Ep1 just now. Felt nauseous at several points.

DiddimusStench · 23/05/2018 17:28

papayasareyum

That’s shocking!! Shock

papayasareyum · 23/05/2018 17:37

Yep Diddi, I was shocked too. I’m surprised she took the part

GhostsToMonsoon · 23/05/2018 19:05

Was did June cut out of her ear - a microchip or a tracking device? Wouldn't they have been able to track her in the lorry? Or is Gilead's technology not that advanced? Even DH found the ear-cutting scene hard to watch, and he normally watches all sorts of violent films. I think the TV series is harder viewing than the book.

Soubriquet · 23/05/2018 19:13

I didn't see it as a tracking device but as an ear tag similar to the ones pigs get.

Identify them to which centre they are registered to

Roussette · 23/05/2018 19:18

Hi all, I need to join in as I nearly ended up in a spoiler thread!

Oh my... Elizabeth Moss is a scientologist, I am gobsmacked by that. I'm speechless. Scientology covers up rape, condones subservience, and forces women to have abortions. I just cannot work out how she can square that religion with this role. Anyway enough of that...

I found the first episode gruelling and cannot imagine where it is going to go.

Aridane · 23/05/2018 19:27

SayNoToCarrots · 23/05/2018 19:49

DunkAndEgg are you talking about ep5? Most people on this thread are only on 1! No spoilers Smile

Soubriquet · 23/05/2018 19:51

Yes. NO SPOILERS!!

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/telly_addicts/3239228-Handmaids-Tale-Season-2-SPOILERS-VIEWING-AHEAD-OF-UK-SREENING Spoiler thread for those who have watched episode 2 onwards. That way no one accidentally gets spoilers

Hisashiburi · 23/05/2018 21:47

Question: it always seems to be assumed that the Handmaids are sent to the colonies after giving birth. Why is this? Surely they'd want them to stay to give birth again? Or is it because they are too much trouble?

Dancingmonkey87 · 23/05/2018 21:52

Janine wasn’t sent to the colognies following the birth of Angela she was actually placed with another family before she stole Angela. I would imagine depending on the behaviour of the handmaidens would depend if they were moved along to the next wife and commander or if they were compliant they would stay.
