Just to say, regarding Karen, she still has to pay some towards council tax, water bills, gas and electricity, food for ALL of them and no doubt some tube fares (not sure how it works). They also have a dog.
School uniform isn't cheap either.
Plus so many other payments to make.
It is very hard being in her position.

noone Expects her to be loaded but she runs out of food and electric every week! She must be getting £400 a week as gets extra disability benefits plus not on benefit cap and not tipping up private rent. In London kids get free travel on buses anyway so not paying for that. Even if she spent £200 week on food and £100 on water gas electric that’s still £100 left to use for normal things.

If she was on Jsa and private rent and only had £50 week for food and bills you could understand

OK finally went on benefit site and did “Karen” as 4 kids two getting least mid care because she isn’t on job seekers and low mobility. They could on theory get more. Said £100 month council tax and £100 week council rent.
She would get £346 tax credits
£45 income support
£62 carers allowance
£13 towards council tax she pays £1.39 a week
£100 full housing benefit
£62 child benefit.

So total of £630-100 rent. Left in pocket £530 plus DLA which wasn’t included in total. So that’s.... £150 week. So £680 to cover bills food electric. No way should she be broke!!

Don’t forget Billy and Honey now pay half the dog’s food bill so Janet and Will can visit him when they want to.

How much are cigs? She is a heavy smoker.

Food will cost a good bit as apart from the twins, the others are practically adults and need spending money too. Why isn’t the Keanu claiming or being sent in some course to get a qualification?

I think perhaps Karen always owes money so it is hard to get on top of things? So every week or month, a big chunk of money is taken away to pay an outstanding bill/loan shark etc and she is behind again?

Akire, those figures are what she would get per week & I don’t think she’d have to pay any council tax - on entitled to she would get over £3000 per month ( using lowest mobility option)

£3K a month for a single mum with four dependents. Really? That’s a huge amount.

Er..folks. This is supposed to be a thread about a fictional east end community, not a discussion on benefits eligibility . Nothing on EE is realistic so hardly expect the facts to be accurate on this issue.
Lets get back to musing on what's happening to the so-called plot.

I did it for my council tax I im on disability benefits I have to pay 10% of mine. Some areas no one get 100% council tax benefit anymore and pay up to 30% of it.

Of course she could have extra disability expenses and loads of debt but story lines don’t make sense. At least if she was on job seekers and no DLA and no carers then be under benefit cap and high rent would make sense.

JUSt feel like the story writers are missing a trick and just being lazy. Mean while those with no visavle income or means support never ever mention money problems!

Just to be clear I live on benefits myself so wasn’t bashing anyone but unless there is good reason and no great disasters in household you can usual manage keep your electric on.

I agree - lazy writing. It is different to unrealistic storylines eg Kaffy coming back from the dead because there are people who are unable to manage on benefits and EE putting on a storyline about someone who is struggling on £3K a month and has to resort to swindling and stealing does those who are really struggling a big disservice.

Surely Mick would want to know what he was going to do before agreeing to it?

Do the carters know that there are other pubs, not just the Vic & the one in Stratford?

If SOC was still the boss then maybe we would have had or about to have a PSA about Karen and what she’s entitled to but thankfully the new boss is moving away from patronising stories that bore us.

So Keanu has too many principles to sign on but he doesn’t mind getting involved with the Don Corleone of East London?

JWB obviously thinks Luke is off living it up with a new boyfriend somewhere - wonder when we will get to see what they’ve really done with him? I think Phil having Luke might be the key to the square takeover falling apart.
