They do this a lot - it's like they can't be bothered to finish the story line.
With Karen we saw them come into her house to take the telly & the dog - you would think they would show the money lenders getting their comeuppance when she got the police involved.

With The Stacey & the baby story - one minute it's touch and go for both of them, the next minute baby's home and everything's fine

mrswhiplington · 06/12/2017 10:58

I wonder if Keegan is going to get mixed up with Phil / Aidan / Vince. He seems to have popped up randomly lately. First with Aidan, then at the hospital with Phil saying "I owe you one".

Nice to see Phil back on form, arranging for Luke to be bundled off in the van. Not sure that's the last we'll see of him though.

The80sweregreat · 06/12/2017 11:22

No. I doubt Luke is dead. Just badly roughed up I guess. Not sure how they will resolve the forged signatures tbh. Will James pursue it or just threaten as he wants them out so doesn’t care? It’s a mystery. Money is always a mystery too. How Lauren keeps going ( and Abi) makes me wonder. Not to mention Stacey! ( even if Whitney becomes a lodger).

nancy75 · 06/12/2017 11:30

Martin & Stacey would probably get some housing benefit, tax credits & child benefits, they have got 2 babies and Lily - they would get some help.

The80sweregreat · 06/12/2017 11:32

I suppose so. I didn’t think of that!

BlackPeppercorn · 06/12/2017 12:58

Jack is ex-police so may have a bit of pension coming in depending when he joined up
He also has the rent from the 2/3 flats that he made out of Max's old house
I can't remember if he still owns the gym/boxing club too

The80sweregreat · 06/12/2017 13:51

Yes, i guess Jack isnt too badly off.
I suppose just live hand to mouth a bit - Ian was always fairly well off - did they say what was going to happen to Beales? I guess he is semi retired now he has sold on the chip shop and the cafe.

Abi is still a mystery though - unless her mum is now loaded and bank rolling her.

BadHairDay0 · 06/12/2017 14:08

Kim was amazing.

The80sweregreat · 06/12/2017 14:25

Kim is great, she deserves more stories really - she is a natural with little Pearl as well.

Akire · 06/12/2017 18:11

WOuld be good if Densise organised food bank collection especially as she promised to pay them back. But months later nothing! You think she least go back let Cora know she’s been on her feet.

Shame they not had her studying after the genus she is supposed to be. She could be running council in a few years.

Why/when did Ian sell cafe? Thought selling chippy was fund new house? What’s supposed to be happening with restaurant? Did they say insurence would pay out or not? Either way he could sell land.

Am I imagining it but years ago didn’t he/someone make restaurant out of old archway lock
Ups or something?

goldenclaire · 06/12/2017 21:51

Did Ian not sell the cafe when he was looking to leave the square with Jane?

nancy75 · 06/12/2017 22:28

No matter when Ian sold the cafe his solicitor would not complete on the sale until all of the paperwork was in place, Ian said the contract didn’t turn up, so the sale wouldn’t have been completed. When you sell a building you know exactly when the sale has gone through - it’s like when you sell your house, you don’t just sit there wondering what day the buyer is going to turn up with a removal van!

Akire · 06/12/2017 23:31

So Ian is retired now? With no business? But must be loaded!

iknowimcoming · 06/12/2017 23:54

I think Ian implied that whilst the Café sale had gone through - the paperwork relating to him staying on and running the cafe as a tenant hadn't materialised - still nonsense of course, no solicitor would process an incomplete sale like that except perhaps Johnny sausage Wink

LineysRunner · 07/12/2017 00:09

Yes, they all seem to have managed to sell the freeholds for a pittance, fucked up the related and crucial leasehold / leaseback agreements, and just not really bothered with paperwork or chasing up solicitors. ALL OF THEM.

Akire · 07/12/2017 01:41

They are making the pub into such a big story but whole soap relies on the pub so it can’t close.

Yes very strange about freehilds, are we supposed to believe creepy Luke it wB will sit there and advise Cathy on how much butter to put on the toast like Fi n pub? Surely if you flogged it then retire and employ muggles to run it

Thymeout · 07/12/2017 01:57

The freeholds hugely increased in value once they were part of a viable redevelopment plan. So long as the freeholders were in the dark, they probably congratulated themselves on having got a good price.

There was some connection with the mayor that I can't remember the details of. There was a demo when she turned up to open Walford in Bloom? I think she squashed a rumour about redevelopment? Possibly some backhanders from WB to the planning c'ttee? They weren't ready to go public about their plans because they hadn't secured enough freeholds?

But this is all too complicated for a soap. Can't imagine Denise and Carmel finding evidence to save the day. More likely that Fi and Josh will turn on dad.

Optimist1 · 07/12/2017 06:43

If you'd contributed to the Save the Vic fund how would you have felt to hear Linda say that now they've lost their pub the fund will at least provide "a nice little nest egg" for their future? I was distinctly Hmm at that one.

The80sweregreat · 07/12/2017 07:52

The whole thing is a farce - James WB probably knew from the start they had forged the paperwork - he may have lawyers he hires to look over things, but i doubt very much that he hired anyone for that. Fi also must have known that mick was abroad when the contract was signed? she was in it then.

Agree that if you had contributed to the ' crowd funding' thing ( as well as the raffle tickets and themed nights ) then you would be a bit fed up that they will use that money for other things!
It is all very complex for a soap, i am not in business and although i have heard of freeholds and lease holds ( and Oreocrumb explained a lot about how pub ones tend to work and nancy knows her stuff too) i am still confused ! Years ago someone , usually Phil, used to just set light to it and get the pub that way!! lol. ( or there was a murder of some sort)

Speaking of my favourite character - why did he lie to Jay about his dad? who was he speaking to on the mobile ? i know it was months ago, but that is bugging me. Will Jay still get the money now for the car lot land? I hope so.
I remember the mayor getting heckled and a bit of a demo which fizzled out. Can't remember why , must have been to do with all this and the council.
My head hurts sometimes trying to make sense of it all.

iknowimcoming · 07/12/2017 08:34

Agree re the 'nest egg', all the stories are so muddled thanks Sean O'Connor that's it hard to see how new guy will sort it out and move on. Perhaps Phil's heavies will refuse to release Luke until W-B tears up all his 'contracts' - that would be ridiculous of course but so was the bus crash/gas explosion Xmas Hmm

I guess it's possible W-B will die suddenly (didn't he say he was dying?) - not sure if they could wrap up the story that way somehow, maybe he leaves a deathbed letter to Caffy confessing to her rape and Josh/Fi will develop a conscience and give the square back in a christmas carol 'gawd bless us everyone' style? Luke has to meet with a sticky end surely I actually dislike him more than Jaaaaaaaaaaammmmmmmeeeeeesssssss Xmas Angry

SoupDragon · 07/12/2017 09:31

I think Luke is a metaphor for Sean O'Connor. Had promise, turned bad, left Ben/the show beaten and bloody on the floor and was then bundled into the back of a van and carted off whilst Ben/the show is left to recover.

The80sweregreat · 07/12/2017 11:17

Max was acting very strangely indeed - Sophie is under her dad's thumb, why he was still ringing her up and wanting to see her was a mystery.
move on max! you have bigger things to worry about than her. Such as most of the square now hating your guts for starters. Abi finding out about Steven will be interesting.
I bet that James's last breath will be very longggggg - he will still be muttering on about Kathy, vile man that he is. Everyone needs closure from his attack on her 30 years ago. He needs to confess and give Kathy some peace.
Luke could have just sacked Kathy and Tina from the cafe - or they could walk out. its now Weyland's problem to find staff to run it.

Littlehenrylee · 07/12/2017 12:00

At the demo (i think it was a save our market? demo), the mayor said something along the lines of ‘Tell them what they want to hear, they will believe everything you tell them but they have short memories’.

It isn’t a terrible short line st all imo but because it is terribly drawn out it isn’t entirely suitable for a soap. It was the same with the bullying story and the constant PSAs. . Again far too drawn out. And there are far too many loose threads. The bus crash, gas explosion, endless little stories that don’t go anywhere, make it nonsensical. The personality changing characters irritate me more than most of all that. Fee and Louise are feisty not cowardly etc.

Thymeout · 07/12/2017 12:30

Yes - it was the personality changing that finished off the Archers for me. Pat used to be one of the more sensible Ambridge women, yet there she was weeping and wailing in court during Helen's trial and all 'me,me,me' about how it was all her fault because she hadn't noticed. And the same problem with loose threads, floods and disappearing strawberry pickers.

There's been more humour since the new guy took over, too. Just the odd bit here and there but it's a start. Real Eastenders do a nice line in black comedy.

southeastdweller · 07/12/2017 12:39

Think the new guy has ordered abrupt endings or breaks to stories he felt were dull (Keanu stripping, Gethin and the love triangle, Janet, Michelle and Tom, etc) so the writers can focus on wrapping up the Weyland story in time for some sort of Christmas showdown.
