Oh how could I forget Jamie L? But he doesn't wear tights dies he? Love Jon Snow.

Ok Lassies prepare to be impressed by my incredible brainwave.

As I lay awake at 3am gin and curry not a good combo I was thinking about Claire's crazy hair when she first unpins it in Jamie's room. It's an analogy:

Her mass of wild, unruly curls symbolise her coming back to life. Throughout the 20 unhappy years her hair was stiff, controlled and without life but unpinning it when she is reunited with Jamie symbolises her waking up again as a woman ........

Must be the gin.

Tomorrow's lecture will be on the meaning behind Older Ian's wooden leg. Grin

MoNigheanDonn · 26/10/2017 09:22

Oooh dry you've hit the nail on the head there

quirkychick · 26/10/2017 09:26

Toby Stephens wears a good tricorn. Just saying Grin.

AKAmyself · 26/10/2017 10:11

I love your brainwaves Dry! More! More!

AKAmyself · 26/10/2017 10:12

Ps nothing in outlander is casual. The costumes, the hair, Jamie’s dirty finger nails... everything has meaning. This is one of the things I adore about this show.

Fantasticmissfoxy · 26/10/2017 10:23

AKA you're right! That was one of the reasons I fell in love with the series - I'm a bit of a horse geek and the saddlery / harnesses and even horses they used were so much more authentic and 'right' than most period dramas (not perfect mind you, but better than most 😉)

I noticed the inky fingernails too - that man has gorgeous hands

Fantasticmissfoxy · 26/10/2017 10:27

I'm also glad they've moved away from the Boston stuff - all I could think when I watched those scenes was ' that's Glasgow' and couldn't concentrate on the plot.... glad they kept the filming in Scotland though. Location wise I know some perfect Scottish locations they could use as Fraser's ridge although I know the tv series may not get that far 😭

Lessstressedhemum · 26/10/2017 10:29

Everything means something. Hair styles are characters in their own right, so Clare's mad, unruly hair definitely means something - a breaking free and a relinquishing control. So does Jamie's loose hair. With Geneva it remained bound and contained, with Claire, it was free and curling. A metaphor for his feelings and, of course, the shaggingGrin
You could drive yourself mental thinking about all the symbolism.
Do you sometimes feel as if everyone else spends more time thinking about these things than DG ever does? It's a bit like when you have to study set texts at school - did the poet actually mean to say/do all the stuff that the teachers tell you or did they just write a poem?

Foxy, I know. Every time they were at "Harvard", I was heard to mutter, that's not Harvard, for goodness sake! Any clown can see that's Glasgow Uni. It better get to Fraser's Ridge, what will we do otherwise.

Sam's hands are beautiful. All big and strong and manly, just like the rest of him.

Am loving this thread . . . I also only go for Jamie not SH. I got into outlander after amazon kept recommending it to me as I’d watched poldark via amazon & initially dismissed it as I thought Jamie not all that from just images (I still think aiden turner / Ross is better looking- he’s the king of the tricorn). But then I watched it and Jamie totally eclipsed Ross (monigheandonn asked if it was worth getting into, well I was pretty obsessed after binge watching the first 2 seasons this year, for some reason I didn’t catch it when actually on tv, but then I got into outlander and it seems a bit meh so after outlander I’m not sure you’ll be that impressed - it’s too BBC and the actors don’t quite have the chemistry).

breadwidow · 26/10/2017 10:51

It in the bit in brackets in gobbled is thread below refers to Poldark

CourtneyLoveIsMySpiritAnimal · 26/10/2017 10:56

but then I got into outlander and it seems a bit meh so after outlander

That’s how I feel about Poldark now. I was obsessed with S1 then I found Outlander.

Poldark could’ve been as brilliant as Outlander but they’re racing through the books as fast as they can. It’s a shame Amazon or Netflix didn’t get their hands on it first.

MoNigheanDonn · 26/10/2017 11:03

Thanks. I'll maybe give it a go when this series finishes. Almost halfway now!

Lessstressedhemum · 26/10/2017 11:11

Aiden Turner is a beautiful man, but I just couldn't get along with Poldark, tbh. I read the books about 35 years ago when I was a teenager and didn't really like Ross much then. My mum fancied the breeks off Robin Ellis, but he did nothing for me, so I was probably sceptical to begin with. I just think that there is no fire between Ross and Demelza, can't stand Elizabeth. Och, I don't know, it's just maybe not my thing.

Fantasticmissfoxy · 26/10/2017 11:23

Agreed AT is lovely but the character of Ross Poldark I just couldn't like - seemed like a pig headed selfish twat to be honest. Not like lovely Jamie oh no no no......

CourtneyLoveIsMySpiritAnimal · 26/10/2017 11:30

Aw, I love Ross and Demelza. I think they were great casting. Hated Elizabeth to start with but I think she was ace as a laudanum-addled sot last series. Also love the Dr but can’t stand his wife.

And Aunt Agatha was fab. She’s #oldladygoals Wink

Lessstressedhemum · 26/10/2017 12:31

Aunt Agatha is my role modelGrin

I was reading the Poldark books (up to book 3, I think) then started watching Outlander and switched to reading the books too, after recommendations. I found the Poldark books a slow burn but quite exciting once they got going. I love Demelza, such a strong, self-made woman.

AlbusPercival · 26/10/2017 14:20

I'm hoping it goes GOT and the tv overtakes books and ties up the loose ends nearer than the author.

JuneFromBethesda · 26/10/2017 16:33

I’m another one whose first obsession was Poldark, before discovering the greater joys of Outlander. I only started watching Outlander because I needed something to fill the Poldark gap after series 2 ended! I very nearly didn’t persevere, either - my attention span is terrible these days and the initial scenes with Claire and Frank didn’t grab me (why is this woman blathering on about owning a vase??). Fortunately I have it another go, and here I am ... Grin

CourtneyLoveIsMySpiritAnimal · 26/10/2017 16:41

Same june

I watched the first few episodes with half an eye on the telly. I thought it was really slow and boring. Then it drew me in and once I’d finished, I had to go back and rewatch them all to catch what I’d missed the first time.

LouiseBrooks · 26/10/2017 17:20

I started watching Outlander on Prime last year. I watched 3 or 4 episodes, went on holiday and couldn't be bothered to watch any more when I got back. I wasn't especially impressed.

Then, when it started showing on More4 there was nothing else on so I thought I'd give it a second chance. When it finished I raced through series 2 and up to episode 5 of series 3, having become absolutely hooked. I am finding it hard to wait a week for the next episode, having watched basically 2 per day for the last 2 weeks.

I still like Poldark though I don't remember Ross being such an arse in the original but I was in my teens and less discriminatory perhaps?

snozzlemaid · 26/10/2017 17:24

Another Poldark fan here who then moved over to Outlander.
Have loved Poldark my whole life but I’m afraid my loyalty now lies with J&C.
I’ve even watched Poldark being filmed close to where I live and met Aidan Turner but I can’t stop myself loving Outlander more.
When I first watched Outlander I thought I’d put the wrong thing on. I’d seen pictures of Jamie in his kilt clearly not in the 20th Century and it started in the 1940s! I had no idea it was about time travel.

JuneFromBethesda · 26/10/2017 18:22

I honestly thought having seen Episode 6, J&C finally reunited, I would find it easier to wait for subsequent episodes. But no. I'm feeling more impatient now. Damn it. Monday is too far away!

snozzlemaid · 26/10/2017 18:29

I can’t wait to see more episodes now they are back together. Outlander is at its best when they’re together.
