i love Sally's outfits too. Wacky 80's multi coloured numbers :)
Mrs O is brilliant, so quick, and the ducks on the wall - classic.
Ken was a misery old so and so even then!

Kannet · 22/11/2017 16:08

Love sally wedding dress

Taping all these. Just watching the one where Gail is drinking wine with Audrey.....whilst pregnant.

Dontsweatthesmallstuff · 22/11/2017 21:05

Im loving watching these too, thanks to this thread Grin

I was going off the current corrie quite rapidly and watching these oldies has put me off even more. There are alot less characters but they all have alot more depth and personality.

Its funny though, i used to think Vera was great/funny and Ivy was horrible. Now I'm quite liking Ivy and thinking Vera is a nasty gobby cow who got what she deserved when she got sacked.

Wormulonian · 22/11/2017 21:30

Don't I used to loathe Percy but find him quite amusing now. I also disliked Alf and thought no amount of money could compensate Audrey for having to be married to him but he is much nicer and less of a skinflint than I recalled. I still think Vera is terrifying and seriously nasty.

I had a good laugh when Bet and Hlda were discussing Adam and Eve via materialism and Bet said she would have looked stunning in a loin cloth and Hilda said that she (Hilda)would probably look like Gandhi!!

scrabbler3 · 22/11/2017 23:18

That Gandhi comment was funny!

I agree with dontsweatthesmallstuff re going off current CS and the superior old shows making it look even worse. It's nice to see Kev and Sally's friendship though - he referred to the day they met today. What would Hilda have made of Sally as mayor?!

zukiecat · 23/11/2017 13:11

I’ve stopped watching current Coronation St, I’m loving the old episodes so much

Loved the scene the other day with Hilda and Kevin singing that daft song and dancing

Also where Sally told Hilda she was the best mum she’d ever had, Hilda’s emotion made me have a wee tear in my eye

Has Jean Alexander’s death ever been referred to on screen?

Quite a few of the current characters would know Hilda

Kannet · 23/11/2017 15:55

Well I thought the wedding was lovely.

OP posts:
zukiecat · 23/11/2017 16:30

So did I Kannet

Just the simple ceremony, no big drama, no sensational storylines, it was lovely

Felt a bit sad too though, knowing all that's going to happen in the last 31 years

HerNameWasCleo · 23/11/2017 20:00

Did people like Jack and Vera? They’re so horrible to each other. By the time I got to Corrie in the 2000s they seemed to be seen as some sort of golden couple.

Mrscaindingle · 23/11/2017 20:00

As far as remember 19 was about the standard age for settling down

Not in the circles I mixed in it wasn't and I was 19 in 1986 the same as Sally. I am also seeing old characters in a new light, they are all more sympathetic and likeable than I remember apart from Vera who I also thought deserved to get the sack. Ken is still as dull as ever, I don't remember the trousers being quite so eye wateringly tight though! I can't keep my eyes off everyone's nether regions. Blush

EdithWeston · 23/11/2017 20:06

Oh yes, the 1980s was definitely a time of tight trousers! I remember it well....

There are so many more words spoken, and it seems like fewer characters but more going on. With people really talking about what is happening.

Vera was pretty unlikeable in this era. She mellowed, and she and Jack stuck it out through thick and thin, and we went through so many highs and lows with them so they morphed into more popular and valued residents.

Mrscaindingle · 23/11/2017 20:15

Yes the writing is vastly superior and I think that that's what makes it so much better as some of the acting isn't that great...Brian and Gail I'm looking at you.

Even Ivy was wearing skintight trousers in one episode, I was definitely wearing baggy ones.

EdithWeston · 24/11/2017 07:36

I was watching the repeat this morning, and the other thing I noticed was how much less stuff people owned. There are far fewer knick-knacks in the houses.

But there are ashtrays on the bar of The Rovers

scrabbler3 · 24/11/2017 08:17

The houses were definitely sparser.

I love Hilda's pale blue tea set. And the Duckworths' similar cream one. The Bradleys have it in green. I was surprised that Emily had mugs rather than a set.

Terry is likeable. I can't remember when his character became so dark.

buggerthebotox · 24/11/2017 08:50

Didn't Terry have a child who lived in Blackpool? I think children out of wedlock were still quite taboo.

Wormulonian · 24/11/2017 09:02

I think just before these Classic episodes started that Terry had got a girl pregnant but that she had decided to leave Weatherfield - I think Curly mentioned it in an episode.

Wow - my eyes!!! Terry in his underpants - everything was on show. The stag/hen do and wedding etc was just lovely. Felt like a proper community on the street- no one seems so kind now, its all too frenetic. People were much nicer to one another and genuinely helping out on the show.. I used to love a pub sing song with the old timers.

I love the clothes - pastel coloured matching jackets and skirts for the older women, big hair and shoulder pads. I had Gail's purple mohair cardi in black. Good times

Bumblina · 24/11/2017 16:25

i like the way they used the fake water board people coming round to Emily's to highlight a common crime at the time - con men who would steal from the elderly whilst pretending to be from the water board.
i know there was a huge problem with that at one time.

Off topic - i'm enjoying the old episodes of a Touch of Frost after Classic Corrie too.

cloudyweewee · 24/11/2017 16:44

I'm glad someone else mentioned the tight trousers- Kevin's jeans are pretty much sprayed on.

HerNameWasCleo · 24/11/2017 19:21

Does Hilda every take her rollers out? What is she waiting for? Genuinely wondering!

HerNameWasCleo · 24/11/2017 19:21

ever not every!

ChevalierTialys · 24/11/2017 22:21

Quite fancying Terry too Blush

katycantrip · 24/11/2017 22:26

She did take the rollers out for the wedding

CactusCactusCactus · 24/11/2017 22:36

I was wondering about the rollers too - I’m a bit behind so not up to the wedding yet!

olliegarchy99 · 25/11/2017 06:49

loved the line re con men from Hilda - she would not be taken in because she is a lot more 'incredible' (or words to that effect Smile)
one-liners that make you smile.
