Argh, three a week Blush.

drearydeardre · 24/05/2018 17:25

sorry Bluths - it made me laugh Smile

WhatMakesYouHappy · 24/05/2018 17:45

Just catching up, a stone cladding salesman just knocked on Vera's door...

Kannet · 24/05/2018 18:38

The Gail and brain story has come out of nowhere. They where happily getting remarried a few months ago (surely less than a year in Corrie time). Did the actor who played Brian decide to leave suddenly

He got married around that time to Leeza Gibbons (who was a big star on US TV). I think his paln was to leave Weatherfield and make it big in Hollywood. I'm sure he had a blink-and-you-miss-it part in the original Robocop film.

kikashi · 24/05/2018 19:06

IIRC Christopher Quentin (Brian) wanted to leave because he thought he could make it big in America. In the last year or so on Corrie he spent a lot of time being papped at Stringfellows in London and boasting in the tabloids about how many women he was shagging etc (so it seemed appropriate that Don saw him slipping into a night club in the last episode)and how famous he should be and wasn't so committed to travelling up to Manchester and the Street anymore - so they decide to kill him off.

He somehow managed to get Leeza Gibbons (a famous US talk show host) to marry him (they had a child) but he didn't secure work and returned to the UK running events for Stringfellows - I think he manages it now (and was accused but acquitted of rape several years ago).

BluthsFrozenBananas · 25/05/2018 10:22

Poor Dawn, the scene where she was trying to explain to Alan why she didn’t want to have lunch with him was so realistically uncomfortable. That’s excatly what predatory men do to young women, twist their words knowing that the woman won’t want to be rude or rock the boat.

kikashi · 26/05/2018 08:25

It's really heating up. Mark Eden is fantastic as Alan Bradley , really creepy. You are right Bluth so uncomfortable. Gail was so feisty back in the 80's compared to the soppy idiot she is these days.

drearydeardre · 26/05/2018 08:41

kikashi - yes Gail has morphed into what the current writers perceive as a soppy and silly OAP - it would never do to have a feisty 60+ year old would it as it does not match the perception of how the old should behave. We older women need to know our place.
I am still feisty - but it gets me nowhere Smile

BettyFlower · 26/05/2018 11:36

I do find Ivy very interfering tho, would hate to have her as a MILGrin

kikashi · 26/05/2018 12:16

Ivy is interfering - especially how nosy and judgemental she is about Audrey. Vera Duckworth would be a worse MIL IMHO - I find her terrifying!

dreary I like to think I'm still quite feisty but agree it seems to get you nowhere. Although there is a lot more blatant misogyny in Classic Corrie the women do seem stronger and want to get ahead (Gail with the sandwich business, Deirdre on the council, Betty and Phyllis taking no prisoners etc) despite set backs. The current crop of women are quite drippy in comparison with little ambition.

drearydeardre · 26/05/2018 12:27

The current Corrie women - (with one or two exceptions) seem to be only concerned with men, men, or other women and constantly whinging
You only have to compare Bette with Toyah in the Rovers Smile

kikashi · 28/05/2018 18:04

Brian's stabbing was handled well I thought. I actually feel a bit sorry for Ivy that Gail is being so intransigent about burying Brian next to his dad.

I can kind of understand Gail not wanting a big Catholic funeral (although I think Brian would have wanted to follow his mum's wishes) but it does seem a shame to be buried somewhere random when it would give Ivy a lot of comfort to have him next to his dad (especially since Gail had just told Brian she didn't love him and they should seperate again). Is Gail being vengeful? Although Ivy shouldn't have said what she did about Gail driving Brian out of the house.

My stomach turned for poor young Dawn with lizardy old Bradley and Baldwin leching over her in the restaurant.

ChevalierTialys · 29/05/2018 13:29

I can't help thinking Gail was unnecessarily cruel to Ivy. She'd fallen out of love with Brian, what difference did it make to her if his funeral was a requiem mass or not? Why would she refuse to let him be buried beside his dad? The one thing that might have been any comfort to his poor mother, what an absolute cow. I really feel for Ivy, actually have done the whole time I've been watching classic Corrie. She may be a bit difficult and judgmental, but Gail and Audrey really treat her absolutely horribly.

ChevalierTialys · 29/05/2018 13:34

@kikashi just read your post and realised we've said basically the same thing!

When Gail said to Don "hes not Ivy's son, he's not Bert's son, he's my husband" I was so annoyed. She'd just asked for a divorce! From my point of view (30 years in the future Grin), it looks like pure spite from Gail towards Ivy. Can't really blame Ivy, on the back of losing her only child, for saying some pretty harsh things.

ChevalierTialys · 29/05/2018 13:36

On a completely unrelated note - THE STONE CLADDING!!! I've genuinely wondered for years why that one house is different to everyone else's (my mum couldn't remember) and now I know!

WhatMakesYouHappy · 29/05/2018 14:08

Slightly behind, by enjoying how Alec's tax return has been going on for at least 3 episodes....

WhatMakesYouHappy · 29/05/2018 14:09

Grin Chevalier

kikashi · 29/05/2018 14:45

Yes Chevalier I was annoyed by Gail's comments to Don and her aggression. Brian was Ivy's son a lot longer than he had been Gail's husband. It seems really spiteful - Ivy would have paid for the funeral no doubt - who will do that now? (Or did Brain have life insurance?) and it would give Ivy so much comfort.

You are right about how badly Audrey and Gail treat Ivy -she was Brian's mum and they went ahead and had Alf make funeral arrangements without consulting her and when Ivy went to Gail's house Audrey was quite rude - have a heart- her son had just been murdered.

WhatMakesYouHappy · 29/05/2018 15:28

Cuddly Toy on the bladders radio!

Mammyloveswine · 29/05/2018 15:56

Oooh just watched this after discovering this thread!

Poor ivy, but when she came and apologised to Gail I thought it was very touching!

So is nowadays Jenny the daughter of Alan Bradley? And did she go out with Kevin and kidnap his little boy at some point? (Sorry I'm straying a few years!).

How awful for poor Dawn... I thought that was a very powerful.scene with the attempted rape!

sparklepops123 · 29/05/2018 16:57

Yes it's the same annoying Jenny

CoolCarrie · 29/05/2018 23:01

Gail was a totally bitch towards Ivy, as pp have pointed out what difference would it have made to let Brian be buried beside his dad?

Mammyloveswine · 30/05/2018 07:31

Ive set it to series record... Will be my guilty pleasure when the kids are in bed!

BluthsFrozenBananas · 30/05/2018 09:55

I’ve just caught up and was coming on to say the same about Ivy and Gail. I can just about understand Gail not wanting the full catholic requiem if she felt Brain wouldn’t have wanted it, but it seems wrong not to have him buried next to his father.
