I loved it. What a great show. Love love love Will. Amazing actor such great facial expressions.

And you'll know what you want to do about this.... I found myself saying no yes no today and smiling.

YesVeryGoodVeryStrong · 23/10/2017 23:07

Arghh I can't believe it ended with no Ian/Lucy!!

I love the micro expressions. There's not many TV programmes that are so dialogue heavy with not much action, it's such a delight to watch. It's almost like a radio programme in that respect.

I like how Anna's "yes. exactly yes" finally backfired on her when Simon said he wanted to dance with her.
"Yes, exactly-I'm sorry - what?!?!" Grin

I still think Claudia Winkleman's history of the elephant should be commissioned.

I thought it was great that nothing was really resolved. Very W1A (and 2012 before it). I predict Izzy sleeps with Will and then regrets it forever as he is destroyed by her not wanting a relationship. Equally Izzy should probably get the sack for slapping Wotshischops (what the hell is that guy's name? In my defence, I watched the final episode online last week). I'd quite like it if Siobhan got the sack for the Tardis incident (even though I love Jessica Hynes) but in any case, it must be time for Ian to move on? Obvs 2012 had a natural end to it whereas he could stick it out at the Beeb forever. But in reality these types float between industries and he'd be off to the MoD or AstraZeneca or similar. Esp as he has shown rather too much leadership for one human being at the Beeb in the last few episodes.

Absolutely brilliant season if it is its last - the subtlety and sparseness of the writing really makes the cast up their game. Nothing is wasted.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 23/10/2017 23:41

We cheered Izzy smacking the smug guy finally. The actor who plays Will is great, reminds me of a young Hugh Grant.

I think my favourite bit was Anna saying "No I don't want that" about the mouthwash. She has a vocabulary of about 10 sentences and yet can get a high flying job in LA.

coconuttella · 24/10/2017 08:00

Dh works for a huge car company and he said ' more for less ' is pretty much the buzz word for them. They are all at it.

Isn’t the W1A phrase ‘more of less’ which makes absolutely no sense, and is a play on ‘more for less’ which is an annoying bit of management speak which is quite common, but actually does make some sense.

coconuttella · 24/10/2017 08:06

I thought it was a bit OTT for Izzy to hit the other guy for saying what he said about Will - not nice, but not really bad either - i can see why she was upset, but going around hitting people isnt on!

Come on, he deserved it!

NotAgainYoda · 24/10/2017 08:08

I was surprised how I felt about the slap. You used to see women slapping men around the face a lot on the telly. It really jarred though

He did deserve comeuppance though

I love Will, and the actor who plays him. Excellent

stonecircle · 24/10/2017 10:19

Coconutella - exactly, yes, exactly. I thought that, but didn’t want The80s to think I was being funny or anything.

YesVeryGoodVeryStrong · 24/10/2017 10:37

tribpot I think he's called Jack. Yes I agree in a way, it's more true to the programme for it not to be resolved, it's just exasperating!

I think Anna would be perfect for LA, I bet they all talk constant shite out there, her 5 sentences probably can't be any worse!!

I thought it was good that it was a rubbish slap, rather than those big walloping fake slaps they do on soaps.

Optimist1 · 24/10/2017 10:48

The whole series was terrific! I think they're right to call a halt now, whilst it's still buzzing - nothing worse than a series that's recommissioned for series after series with the quality deteriorating each time.

spiderlight · 24/10/2017 11:16

Absolutely loved this series. The actor who plays Will also plays Prince William in 'The Windsors' and is equally brilliant in that.

kazzaD66 · 24/10/2017 15:29

Such a great cast of actors brilliantly playing great characters. Aswell as the fab dialogue, there are some brilliant facial expressions, esp from Hugh Bonneville. Also, a word of praise for David Tennant's narration, obviously relying solely on his voice and words.......meanwhile, somewhere else in the building, the same day but later on......Grin

ShoutyMcShouty · 24/10/2017 22:31

I love how jobs and decisions get "re-imagined"!

YesVeryGoodVeryStrong · 25/10/2017 11:39

I love how the bleeping out, which is ridiculous, becomes even more ridiculous!

  • She's been offered ** Thousand pounds.
  • ** Thousand?
  • Yes, ** Thousand.

I really want to see the outtakes, are they included on the DVD - does anyone know? On Claudia Winkleman's Instagram she said she laughed so much she had to be removed at one point.

OP posts:
MissFitton · 25/10/2017 12:36

As someone who is very fond of outtakes (sometimes preferring them to the original programme) I would love to see the outtakes from this.

RhiannonOHara · 25/10/2017 13:02

The80s, Izzy's slapping the smug horrible guy had been building up for AGES: he is constantly horrible to Will and tries to tell her what to do too. I don't blame her at all; in fact my household cheered. Grin

I think Anna just fainted because of the stress of the restructure and interviewing for Amazon etc. The paramedic said 'These things happen for a reason', which I took to mean that Anna was under pressure and suffering.

I am being a bit thick here and obviously I don't really know how this stuff works but I still don't quite get how they sorted out the Hugh Grant thing. David Attenborough talked to Tony Hall, I got that, but wouldn't Hugh Grant's people have to be involved as well and agree to drop their complaint? I don't think anyone mentioned that?

I'd love another series. I'm not worried about diminishing returns; it's been consistently good. I want to see where Izzy and Will go, and even if Anna leaves (I'll miss her!) I'd like to see what if anything happens with Ian and Lucy.

YesVeryGoodVeryStrong · 25/10/2017 14:15

Rhiannon this is very much not my patch of scrubby ground, and you'll know how you want to feel about this, and indeed whether you think it to be true or not, but here's the thing: I think Hugh and David are friends and I'm not being funny or anything but I think David maybe rang up Hugh and persuaded him to drop the whole thing. So that's all good. Hurrah!

Or have I misunderstood?

OP posts:
The80sweregreat · 25/10/2017 14:51

Yes, he may have deserved her hitting him. But if a man had done this to her there would be uproar! ( I know its just a show! ) I liked the will character, at least someone was on his side in the end.

tribpot · 25/10/2017 15:21

I agree, the Izzy slapping looked out of place because that's totally unacceptable workplace behaviour. Ironically it was too TV-ish.

Yes, Sir D phoned Hugh and got it all straightened out. I cannot imagine what he said - 'look Hugh, this guy is clearly the Beeb's village idiot, he didn't mean any harm'.

RhiannonOHara · 25/10/2017 15:28

Yes, brilliant, very clear, VeryGood. Grin I think I was confused because I could have sworn that they talked about 'David' and 'Tony' but not 'Hugh' –I was wondering what the Tony link was –but I must have misheard.

I think the slapping had been earned, and arose from well-set-up story and background, rather than looking out of place or too TV-ish – horrible man had been consistently sniping at and bullying Will for a long time; it didn't come out of nowhere. It was shocking precisely because it's totally unacceptable workplace behaviour, and that was made clear; Izzy looked shocked and appalled to have done it. It was definitely done in extremis.

sickofsocalledexperts · 25/10/2017 18:43

I loved how Siobhan Sharp just didn't bother in meetings any more : "I'm bored now" and in fact usually her useless ideas ended up getting implemented. BBC Me, it's you!

TeachesOfPeaches · 25/10/2017 23:06

I don't understand how Will and the David Attenborough thing worked? Does David know Will?

tribpot · 26/10/2017 07:46

No, Will just stalked him at his recording studio and then found him getting into a car nearby and explained the situation to him. Attenborough would have had no clue who he was (but I suppose might have heard of Ian Fletcher), but I assume no reason to doubt his ludicrous story either!

stonecircle · 26/10/2017 08:34

Teaches - did you not see the penultimate episode where Will was stalking David Attenborough? Ended with Will spotting him down an alley as he was cycling away and he headed off to talk to him.

YesVeryGoodVeryStrong · 26/10/2017 10:58

I'm surprised Will didn't turn around and tell everyone David Attenborough was his godfather or something and that's how he got his internship at the BBC.

Peaches I love your username!
