GBBO - opinions?

What are people's opinions on the new Bake Off so far? And yes, I know we're only a few minutes in. IMO the new presenters feel a bit like they're trying a little too hard to be Mel and Sue.

Opinions?

Only just caught up. I loved it - every bit of it!! (Well not the ads but I was watching a recording so that helped.)

Felt Pru was better than Mary, less 'nice old lady' (to Paul's straight taking / cutting comments). Because of this Pru seems (to me) more professional and honest - liked the way she was interested in the different way people were doing things rather than doubting. Also felt she softened Paul's cough too - which can only be good.

I love Sandi anyway - always have. Don't particularly know Noel, jusr his persona which I wasn't sure would work, but liked him.

Also felt the overall talent was high - seemed to have slipped slightly on the BBC (still were talented bakers but not many in the starting group). Plus I liked them all - helps a lot!!

shaggedthruahedgebackwards · 03/09/2017 18:01

I really enjoyed the first episode too and Jo Brand's Extra Slice show had me laughing just as much as usual.

Although I really liked Mel & Sue, I did feel like the format had got a bit tired on BBC and so far it appears that the move to C4 and change in presenters has actually given the show a freshness it needed.

I didn't watch it live (I rarely watch anything that isn't BBC live) so I was able to FF thru the ads. I was worried it would seem too rushed in a shorter show so I was really pleased to see they'd extended the length of the show to account for the ads.

TizzyDongue · 03/09/2017 18:07

Oh shaggedthruahedgebackwards that reminds me - one negative thing I felt was (and this was comment on in the first pages by those in real time) they rushed through the judging - especially the first bake. Though this will probably improve when there's fewer contestants.

ppeatfruit · 04/09/2017 08:48

I' m wondering if channel 4 is deliberately repeating it and repeating it to try and avoid having everyone recording it to skip the ads!! They are handy to get up (use up some calories!!) and get a cuppa or feed the pets etc.

GBBO back on tomorrow night Grin who's watching?

TizzyDongue · 04/09/2017 19:01

I will. Hoping I will actualy manage it tomorrow too

SapphireStrange · 05/09/2017 12:43

Apparently Sewing Bee will be back next year. I follow Jade on Facebook and she's posted that it's definitely back next year

SERIOUSLY?!?!? I was convinced it had been canned. I'm so pleased. I love the Sew Off.

Bake Off – it's OK. I'll keep watching. It's mainly the contestants who make it enjoyable, and so far they seem like the usual bunch of mostly likeable, with the odd very funny/interesting/endearing one.

I can't get very excited about Prue but she's not awful. Noel is very much like the work-experience kid but I agree with those saying he'll relax and will warm up. Sandi is fine. I've never liked Hollywood, so plus ca change. I miss Mel and Sue madly though. They're so warm and naturally funny.

ppeatfruit · 05/09/2017 12:53

Sapphire I reckon Sandie and Noel will 'warm up' There isn't much time in the earliest eps. to film all the chat etc.

Although I liked Mary , Pru is soo much better, more relaxed, friendlier, funnier and brighter: she was brilliant on Extra Slice.

I never thought I'd say this but I reckon it's better than the Beeb's version so far and I'm looking forward to the rest of it. (Apart from the ads of course).

I liked the "Vera Duckworth* type older lady but I reckon the woman who did the champagne bucket will win. She didn't smile much, maybe it was nerves, but all her bakes were spot on.

yawning801 · 05/09/2017 19:45

15 minutes to go! Currently getting marshmallows out to make hot chocolate...!

I think Prue is better than Mary Berry and I think Noel Fielding waa an excellent choice. I like Sandi Toksvig but don't think she's settled in yet. She can be very funny but hasn't added much to the programme so far. Some great baking though! The biscuit boardgame was a fiendish challenge.

ppeatfruit · 06/09/2017 09:46

Yes I liked nearly all the bakes tonight. Loved the more traditional flavours in the filled biscuits!

Not sure about the little 'comedy set ups' with Noel and Sandie though , she comes across as a bit highbrow for them.

LisaMed1 · 06/09/2017 19:27

I only watched the GBBO on BBC for the last series. I found it a bit meh and I felt Mary Berry could be one of those 'ladies on the committee' types that have a keen eye for the 'right sort' and 'our sort' and 'not our sort'. I've had a lot of fails with her recipes.

I enjoy the C4 version. Watched with DH and we both felt better for watching it and more relaxed. I suspect that Prue has a streak of 'doesn't give a shit' that will make it fun. When Noel and Sandy have got into the swing of things I think they will be a lot of fun.

Gindingaling · 06/09/2017 19:30

I was loving this till it became obvious the star baker is anything but an amateur.

I think its over for me.

LemonRedwood · 06/09/2017 20:10

Of course he's an amateur. He's not a professional baker, therefore he is an amateur. Amateur doesn't mean shit.

Argeles · 06/09/2017 20:19

I was an avid viewer of GBBO on BBC, and wasn't sure I'd watch it on C4, but it's so much better!

Whilst I always loved it, I absolutely cannot stand Mel, and she used to make me cringe. Mary has had an excellent career and is very knowledgeable and talented, but I find her quite standoffish and I don't really get the love for her that so many people have. I've never been very fond of Paul, but I really used to like Sue.

When I heard who was going to on the C4 version, I was so annoyed, as I've always liked Sandi, but have never been able to stand Noel or Prue - and then of course there's Paul who I'm not fond of.

I decided to give it a go, as I only liked 1 out of 4 of the original cast, so the odds hadn't actually changed for me, despite the change in cast.

Straightaway I loved Sandi, and really liked Prue's energy and rapport with contestants and cast, and I warmed to her very quickly. I think she is miles better than Mary. I even prefer Paul now, as with Prue, as I think their energies are better suited, and I also think she'd tell him to fuck off if he got too up himself. It no longer seems like a mother and son type relationship, which I couldn't stand before. As for Noel, I can't bear any of his 'comedies,' or when he has been on comedy panel shows, but I like him on GBBO, and I even laughed at some of the things he said.

Sandi was hilarious last night when she was eating the chocolate and the contestant said it was like chocolate and sex. Sandi replied straightaway that she definitely didn't get sex from it, as she was looking at him! She then said something about the chocolate being delicious and that maybe she could 'turn' for him. I've probably re-told that in a really shit way, but it was so funny, and I had to pause it and rewind, hear it again, pause and laugh more, then I moved on with the show.

No Mel, I certainly don't miss you with your unfunny accents and 'humour' and stupid face pulling.

chipscheeseandcurrysauce · 06/09/2017 20:58

I prefer the new series, it needed refreshing.

I don't mind the ad breaks, Noel and Sandi are decent presenters, I like Prue and I'm glad the sexual innuendos have stopped.

MarshaBrady · 06/09/2017 22:09

I like it, the second one felt more natural than the first for the presenters.

Like Prue and Sandi and Paul is as he was which I think is good. Wasn't keen on Noel, but better with the second one, so he's ok too.

Some great show stoppers in there - really well done

beepbeeprichie · 07/09/2017 08:11

As far as I know the star baker isn't a professional at all. That was just the Daily Fail shit stirring. He just bakes and decorated cakes for family and friends. You wouldn't call that a professional I don't think. It's not his business.

nicolasturgeonGRTRtheresamay · 07/09/2017 13:59

The standard is pretty low this year. The star baker is the only one that seems to be able to produce anything that doesn't look totally novice.

I do like the Liverpool woman though.

The Russian I was surprised when she said she was married, i thought she was really young.

The Scottish guy looks nice, but everytime he moves or speaks he's camper than Christmas lol.

ppeatfruit · 07/09/2017 14:21

nicolas Did you see the illusion cakes in the first episode? I thought that most of them were the opposite of "a pretty low standard''. They were amazing. Hmm

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 07/09/2017 14:23

Pretty low standard? We're only 2 weeks in. The illusion cakes were incredible!

ppeatfruit · 07/09/2017 14:29

Great minds Dame Grin

nicolasturgeonGRTRtheresamay · 07/09/2017 14:30

Humm I don't agree, the champagne bucket was nice enough but more molding skills than baking. Most people seemed amazed by the watermelon but it was just red dye with some carving and painted fondant.

The glass house one would have been good, but it fell apart. I just think the execution is failing so many of them.

Most board games they had were just really basic.

TizzyDongue · 07/09/2017 14:40

What's the standard though? If it's the initial weeks of the last few years it's way above that.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 07/09/2017 14:41

It's not 'just red dye' though , is it? It's red dye AND getting the cake to taste nice AND finishing on time AND doing it all on telly.
