CAUTION - HERE BE DRAGONS (PROBABLY) AND SPOILERS

THIS THREAD IS FOR DISCUSSION OF SEASON 7, EPISODE 6 "BEYOND THE WALL"

Come and discuss the fifth episode in the penultimate series, airing August 21ST at 2am UK time! Don't read the thread if you want to avoid finding out what happens in Season 7 but also Seasons 1-6. This is the penultimate episode this series!!

Please avoid discussing leaks and production details for Seasons 7 and 8 but speculate away on what we have learnt from the new episodes and what it might mean for the rest of the Season and the ultimate winner(s) of the Game of Thrones. There is a spoiler thread running here if you want to talk about production leaks and insider information as well

As a little warm up for later, HBO have just released a little teaser for tonight's episode here

That was tense, but sadly, I read the predictions thread where one poster had admitted to reading the leaked script so Viscerion''s fate was not a surprise to me.

I still think that Arya is playing along and doing exactly what LF is expecting her to do because she knows, that he knows that she is spying on him. She didn't try to keep her faces a secret from Sanaa and she gave her the knife so I wonder what she expects Sansa to do next?

Loved the Hound''s dialogue with Tormund.

Trills · 21/08/2017 22:14

It's not like the wildfire napalm stuff, where the recipe has been lost to the ages and they had to "find" stores of it (and maybe Qyburn back-engineered the recipe?), it's just a machine.

LilaoftheGreenwood · 21/08/2017 22:15

EsmeesBees YES I came on to say exactly this, Jon is a Targaryen and he's technically dead.

MaryPoppinsPenguins · 21/08/2017 22:15

Why couldn't they have just killed someone just outside the gate of the wall... and let him turn. Why did they have to trek all that way? Hmm

Trills · 21/08/2017 22:25

1 - who would they kill?
2 - you don't automatically become a wight if you die North of the Wall, you've gotta get bit

KentMum2008 · 21/08/2017 22:26

Esmes technically Benjen is dead. Or undead so I guess he doesn't really need anything to survive. He wouldn't need to eat or sleep presumably. He was speared by a WW and left for dead until the Children found him and put a dragonglass danger through his heart to stop him turning into a Wight.

I did wonder how he manages to 'flame on' his fire swingy thingy. It went out when he got to Jon and then when he put Jon on the horse he lit it again, with a 'schting' noise, like Berics sword.

MarvellousMonsters · 21/08/2017 22:28

Trills, I didn't think you had to be bitten, isn't that why Wildings burn their dead?

But yes, how do you choose the person to kill? Eeny meeny miny mo....?

KentMum2008 · 21/08/2017 22:29

Do you have to get bitten? I thought you just had to be killed by one of them? It's so confusing!

MaryPoppinsPenguins · 21/08/2017 22:30

Someone old, already near deaths door... a prisoner... a volunteer?? Point being, there's no way they all expected to come back alive. Just seems a safer option Confused

yumyumpoppycat · 21/08/2017 22:31

Hmmm one ice dragon, one fire dragon and one water dragon ? Was that a prophecy or did I dream it (shit would that make me a soothsayer if it comes true)

Trills · 21/08/2017 22:35

OK maybe "bit" is too narrow, but it's infection rules rather than "any death makes a wight" rules.

MaryPoppinsPenguins · 21/08/2017 22:38

I thought anyone who dies beyond the wall will turn?

yumyumpoppycat · 21/08/2017 22:39

Mango it's super handy that all the undead good guys (except Jon) can make fire weapons so easily. I was watching today thinking oh no Beric put out the fire they needed that for fighting wights! doh. I think they did cover that handy skill in an earlier episode but it slipped my mind.

yumyumpoppycat · 21/08/2017 22:43

I though the white walkers just woke them if they were in the area, it does seem a bit vague though. There have been occasional rogue wights in previous seasons - are they ones that have woken and are marching towards the NK?

Puffpaw · 21/08/2017 22:49

I think qyburn will be important, he was able to create s zombie, so may have other ways of killing them. I also don't think we have seen the last if the wildfire. I think Jon will kill bran.
What do the white walkers want and are they all bad? What about the ww babies?

MaryPoppinsPenguins · 21/08/2017 22:54

Yes, what do they want??

ChevalierTialys · 21/08/2017 23:03

Disclaimer Havent read the thread!

This season has been very emotional, I've cried at literally every episode. Is anyone else finding this? It's rather irritating as DP mocks me every time.

Episode 1 - cried at the Hound digging the graves of the farmer and his daughter, because he did care. Also at Dany finally arriving in Westeros, because FINALLY!

Episode 2 - cried when Nymeria rejected Arya, and when Theon bitched out and did not try to save Yara/Asha. Also got emotional seeing all Dany's supporters together and Aryas reunion with hot pie.

Episode 3 - cried when Tyrion and Jon met again. And when Sansa was so happy at Brans return (short-lived because Bran was so unresponsive and has turned into RoboBran). Also very excited about ice finally meeting fire and the instant sparks there.

Episode 4 - the most crying so far because Sansa and Arya reunited. Siblings - the antagonism, the love. There's no other bond like it. And then because Dany was fighting Jaimes army and I wanted her to win but didn't want Jaime to die and Bronn shot one of the dragons and I'm hoping Bronn will die now and Tyrion was there and could see Jaime but Jaime didn't know he was there and Tyrion was scared Jaime would die because Siblings and oh god the conflicting emotions!

Episode 5 - cried when Tyrion and Jamie saw each other again - such emotion-laden relationships in this series, so much backstory!

Just finished watching episode 6 and I cried when Viserion was killed, and when Jon and Dany spoke on the ship because Emilia Clarke did a good job playing a nother trying to control her grief. And then cried again when I realised (and pointed out to DP) they'd left a dead Dragon north of the wall and in the next scene the night king turned Viserion.

My prediction is that with control of a dragon, the night king is going to bring down the Wall.

tiredbuthappyworkingmum · 21/08/2017 23:05

Remember the series trailer that had Cersei breathing out icy air? Does that signify a Night King & Lannister connection?

ChevalierTialys · 21/08/2017 23:05

I loved every bit of the Hounds dialogue in this episode, but his conversation with Tormund was the absolute best. That knocked the chicken thing off of the top spot (of quotes by the Hound) in my opinion

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 21/08/2017 23:06

Wondering how the heck the characters' plots all get tied up in 8 more episodes - maybe they all get killed off at the end like the end of Blackadder Goes Forth.

ChevalierTialys · 21/08/2017 23:12

I just said to DH 'what are we actually gonna do when it's over?'

Walking dead is back on in october

McTufty · 21/08/2017 23:13

Is the next series only 8 episodes?

RJnomore1 · 21/08/2017 23:15

Ok having a thought - if dragons are only controlled by targaryens are undead dragons only controllable by undead targaryens?

Does that explain the weird connection between Jon and NK? Let's be honest we must all have noticed the chemistry...

Speaking of which I did smirk at the "you're the fastest" moment between Jondry

I hate the second last episodes.

honeyroar · 21/08/2017 23:16

Personally I'm erring towards wanting to be on the night king's side (if it wasn't so cold!). He doesn't faff about, no bend the knee crap, no dragon killing spear chucker (does it himself with one shot), no three eyed raven, crank a dead dragon out of a lake...

A lot of that episode annoyed me. It was all a bit rushed and out of context (time wise).

And the Ayria plot had better be a red herring. If she can't outsmart Littlefinger after all that training then head Faceless man (forgot his name) had better come and kick her arse. (Will he anyway? She ran off with some faces).

RJnomore1 · 21/08/2017 23:19

Ooh

Out there thought (may be the merlot sorry)

Could the rise of the NK be linked to a threat from the possibly unstable dany? Did her three dragons hatching hasten winter and could he actually be trying to control the damage from her and her dragons?
