CAUTION - HERE BE DRAGONS (PROBABLY) AND SPOILERS

THIS THREAD IS FOR DISCUSSION OF SEASON 7, EPISODE 6 "BEYOND THE WALL"

Come and discuss the fifth episode in the penultimate series, airing August 21ST at 2am UK time! Don't read the thread if you want to avoid finding out what happens in Season 7 but also Seasons 1-6. This is the penultimate episode this series!!

Please avoid discussing leaks and production details for Seasons 7 and 8 but speculate away on what we have learnt from the new episodes and what it might mean for the rest of the Season and the ultimate winner(s) of the Game of Thrones. There is a spoiler thread running here if you want to talk about production leaks and insider information as well

As a little warm up for later, HBO have just released a little teaser for tonight's episode here

I feel like the pacing of this series is all over the place, and it just feels ridiculously rushed. Like they've been terribly self indulgent over the last 6 seasons and have suddenly thought "oh shit, we have all these plot threads to tie up as well as deal with the big bad we've mostly been ignoring until the last season". It's spoiling it a bit for me overall Sad. And I really don't like the whole Jon/Dany relationship they're working up to. Again it just feels too fast and therefore unrealistic. I could have maybe bought into it more if it had been given time to develop.

On the plus side, the dragons have been incredible and I think Jamie is close to realising quite how evil Cersei is and finally deciding he's had enough. Euron has also been a great new villain - the ship battle was great. Definitely shipping Brienne with Tormund!

SarfEast1cated · 22/08/2017 11:11

I don't see how stabbing a Wight actually kills them, they have no internal organs to damage do they? Something that shatters their skeleton (like a hammer) would be better no?
I have been giving this too much thought.

AryaUnderfootNowPrefersSansa · 22/08/2017 11:12

I just watched Preston Jacobs' episode watch on YouTube. I normally find his reviews quite irritating but he has pointed out some massive inconsistencies in editing and how the show now fails to follow even its own established show-canon.

It's a shame as the episode was visually really stunning and obviously well choreographed. From a narrative point of view, it just fell utterly flat - as has the whole season.

AryaUnderfootNowPrefersSansa · 22/08/2017 11:15

SarfEast stabbing a Wight should not kill them. Only fire should. This was shown in season 1 when Jon killed the Wight that attacked Jeor Mormont. The hacked off hand/arm was still able to move.

SarfEast1cated · 22/08/2017 11:18

But being on fire didn't stop the polar bear though did it? I couldn't work out why they were stabbing the wights with their swords in the battle last night.

TheHiphopopotamus · 22/08/2017 11:23

I also wondered why, having gone to Dragonstone to mine a load of Dragonglass, knowing that that would kill the white walkers, they apparently set off into the heart of white walker territory without any.

I realise that the intention was capture one rather than kill it, but did nobody think ahead?

AryaUnderfootNowPrefersSansa · 22/08/2017 11:25

Some of them were using dragonglass daggers which in showiverse kills wights. Stabbing them with a normal sword or hitting with Gendry's pointless hammer shouldn't stop them. The Hound proved that by not stopping the 'dumb cutn' with a rock.

The whole fight made little sense. There is no way on earth those 10 men could have held off the wights for so long.

Trills · 22/08/2017 11:28

Cutting them into bits will slow them down even if it doesn't kill them.

TheHiphopopotamus · 22/08/2017 11:29

Ah, I hadn't noticed that Arya

If I was them though, I'd have had an obsidian plated suit of armour, with matching hat and all the weapons would have been made of it as well Grin

LetBartletBeBartlet · 22/08/2017 11:39

Why didn't they just send Dany and Jon on the back of a dragon to go North of the wall and swoop down to pick up a Wight to bring it back?

honeyroar · 22/08/2017 11:44

Jon and Dany might not get together if they find out who he is.

MarvellousMonsters · 22/08/2017 11:46

I do wonder if Dany will see Jon as a threat once she finds out he has a better claim to the throne than her. Obvs it'll happen after they've shagged, just to escalate the incest awkwardness to the highest level.

AryaUnderfootNowPrefersSansa · 22/08/2017 11:53

Incest awkwardness will be nothing to her - her parents were brother and sister. He might not like it very much. His claim to the throne being better than hers might be a problem if she ends up losing any more dragons. Let's face it, her birthright and dragons are about her only assets as far as the people of Westeros are concerned.

LetBart because then there's be no opportunity to show a budding Bromance between Tormund and the Hound and a chance to show off Beric's flaming sword and because there'd be no excuse for not showing Ghost due to CGI costs.

aayla · 22/08/2017 12:02

I think Arya will cause some friction if Jon and Dany get together.
If she can't handle Big Sis sleeping in her parent's bedroom, then she won't be happy at the thought of sharing her favourite brother.

Trills · 22/08/2017 12:07

It'd be stupid NOT to sleep in that bedroom.

It's built to be the warmest - something about natural hot springs - Winterfell is built where it is for a reason.

MarvellousMonsters · 22/08/2017 12:23

Yes Arya, we established up-thread that Dany won't care about the incest issue, but Jon might. That's why the reveal will happen after the shinannegins, so that Jon has maximum potential guilts.

Random thought as I was hanging out the washing just now: How do the Targaryens differentiate between other Aunts/Uncles when their Mother/Father are also technically their Aunt/Uncle. I'm over thinking, I know, but...

aayla · 22/08/2017 12:26

Do Dany and Cersei mirror each other as a plot device?

Mustang27 · 22/08/2017 12:28

Sorry place marking to read back and comment later. They have a friggin dragon people!!! Jon you deserve a slap you fanny.

honeyroar · 22/08/2017 12:33

Jon managed to shake off his guilt and shag Ygritte and break his Black Watch vows... So I don't think he's going to be that worried. think he will be more shaken up to find out he's not a Stark and Ned wasn't his dad. And Dany may well be shaken up that he's her rival with a better claim.

aayla · 22/08/2017 12:34

I read somewhere the fan theory that Bran was the Nightking, which I didn't like.
Now that the Nightking has a dragon that theory seems a bit more realistic, as presumably the Nightking will now ride on the dragon. I still don't see how the theory could work, but it would mean that Bran could fly.

SaucyJack · 22/08/2017 12:35

I like the sound of Cleganebowl.

Not really enjoying the relegation of Sandor to comedy sidekick status. He's a worser man than that.

It's all a bit too Hollywood now. I kinda miss the GRRM days where bad things actually happened, and major good guys died.

Although obvious I don't want anyone left in it to die!

ElenaGreco123 · 22/08/2017 12:41

Just to clear up the confusion. They didn't wear hats, because they are Geordies.

Thoros apparently carries around wildfire for his sword (as you would), but if he did why did they set all the wights on fire instead of messing around with one sword?!

I am confused by what kills wights now, off to Google.

ElenaGreco123 · 22/08/2017 12:47

The should read: why didn't they set all the wights on fire instead of messing around with one sword?!

AryaUnderfootNowPrefersSansa · 22/08/2017 12:48

I'm sure in the books Sam tries to stab a Wight with his dragonglass dagger but it shatters. That's after he melted the White walker with it though.

Showiverse has different rules from bookiverse though.

One moment that did make me smile was the Hound trying to shake the remains of the wight's face off his hand.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 22/08/2017 12:53

Ah, he obviously carries the wildfire in his hat.
