Anyone else watching this catch-up on a Castaway/10,000 years BC/The Island type show set in remote Scotland.

Partially broadcast a year or two ago, C4 stopped showing it before the group of 23 started to fall apart.

Shocking stuff, with overt sexism, bullying, aggression and violence.

Enlightening just how quickly how the 'emotionally intelligent' generation disintegrates and revert to basic role models.

Most of the women have walked out already due to bullying and sexism by various, Tobys, Ollys, Robs and Sams led by a bitter plumber.

Stark reminder how far humans haven't travelled and how quickly we can go back.

On again tonight.

just pressed play on ep 1. Confused

specialsubject · 09/08/2017 11:34

Just watched part 2. Will there be anyone left?

Apart from the large number of dickhead millenials ( bounty was much better) I think it is also that survival situations mean that modern ideas about democracy and sharing just aren't practical.

abigailgabble · 09/08/2017 12:27

watched first two (i'm Very Busy ok). is quite chilling. i would be starting to feel very unsafe if i were among the remaining women.

futuristic1 · 09/08/2017 13:57

It is chilling, isn't it?

There's a level of basic respect for other people (of any sex) that's missing.

There are a few particularly nasty seeming guys who are obviously able to manipulate the group very effectively.
They don't seem to have a solid moral base to fall back on and these are privileged people (in real life) who've had good educations.

A few older women might have helped.
The two older men have been effectively evicted and live in the woods.

The younger women can seem passive and haven't responded in a united fashion to the lack of respect being shown to them.

The boys are generally contemptible and not people you'd want near you in the zombie apocalypse

Tues ep was much better than Mondays, Monday was just the Anton show.

Tues ep seemed a horrible environment for the women. It reminded me of frontier house, a show about going back to pioneer days, the women were shocked by the limited scope of the Pioneer woman's life, Eden seems to have regressed to this era. That plumber was the worst.

Anjelica77 · 09/08/2017 16:09

I've been watching too and am shocked by how things are playing out and it is very scary indeed. I remember thinking in the first series shown last year how much it seemed that male cooperation was linked to their personal relationships and access to women. Those with the least connection to a woman seemed the most likely to be selfish and uncooperative.

It reminded me of a university seminar I once had where we discussed the origins of marriage and monogamy. The lecturer said marriage and monogamy was key to civilised society as without it women in general gravitate to the men with the most resources leaving the majority of men without a mate which in turn leads to the breakdown of the basic rules and morals that guide society. I was never sure I agreed but after watching this perhaps he was right!

The other thing that got me was Rachel and Olly I can understand her liking him and going a bit loopy over him (been there, done that) but I don't understand how he could be so physically affectionate and intimate with her for that period of time without having any romantic feelings for her especially knowing how she felt about him.

futuristic1 · 09/08/2017 16:39

@Angelica77 - it's grim to think we're all only a few months and a lack of a relationship away from abject drudgery.

I thought it was a bit rum of Olly claiming he did his best to fend off Rachel when we saw him beckoning her over into his sleeping space for a 'cuddle'!

But going on some of the comments made by former participants, there seems to be quite a disconnect in terms of putting a name to their behaviours

www.vice.com/en_uk/article/xwwqjn/the-complicated-truth-about-the-sexism-on-channel-4s-eden

Chef Stephen admits he 100% crossed the line but maintains he wasn't sexist.... umm...

The carpenter was on the money describing Oli as a user. He did not try and fend her off, he was using her.

Shitalopram · 09/08/2017 16:45

I'm watching too. Some of the expressions on the women's faces in episode 2 reminded me very much of those in the last series I tuned in for... the Handmaid's Tale. Documentary and not fiction, but still gave me chills.

futuristic1 · 09/08/2017 17:01

@Shitalopram - yep - you can't help feeling there's a big lesson here.

That's the sort of society we've come from and we could go back to it in the blink of a long-term power cut.

These 'millenials' who've had the most educational input of any generation are the ones you'de least expect to regress but hey ho - I don't think they displayed much 'awareness' of their actions

Just caught up with episode one and two. My heart was RACING towards the end of ep 2 with pure rage. When the plumber was shouting down the woman trying to explain about putting the cesspit away from open water, MY GOD, it was infuriating.

Just saw this quote in the Vice article linked to above, from one of the women:

"Nobody in there was sexist. That's just been made up"

Unless I was inadvertently slipped some glue while I watched that episode, there were most certainly sexist people in there.

I felt sick to my stomach when the men were having sordid chats about the women's tits who they wanted to fuck and the women KEPT SAYING STOP and "this so going too far" and they just carried on. It was vile and a form of sexual/psychological abuse. Sickening.

WellErrr · 09/08/2017 20:04

I'm finding this incredibly disturbing.

Loungingbutnotforlong · 09/08/2017 20:34

It's gripping and horrifying. By the end of episode 2 it is not a hugely safe place for the women- the 'banter' and 'jokes'- comments about sex and breast size all contributing to a very aggressive and intimidating atmosphere. I am surprised though that not one books- maybe Anton or the carpenter stood up to the younger Neanderthal types. Of course women shouldn't need other decent men to step in and 'save' them, but it was clear that the younger men were not listening or getting the message from the women that they had crossed the line.
I would love to see one of these programmes that does not have the people fighting for survival and scraps, but gives them at least the basics so we could see a true community dynamic develop (hopefully).
Between this and the handmaiden tale, tv has had some salutary lessons about the vulnerability of women to the male pack mentality

Loungingbutnotforlong · 09/08/2017 20:36

In fact the plumbers idea about people doing the work they were most able/ capable of would be perfectly sensible but for the fact that he clearly valued everything he was able to do as more important, and anything someone physically less able would accomplish as 'less than'.

fourquenelles · 09/08/2017 21:01

He comes across as a poisonous little toad*. I thought I was going to get a glimmer of decency when he said that it would take him just a week to get the garden under control. I was holding my breath waiting for him to take that job on but...no. So much easier to criticise and walk away than put his money where his mouth is.

I do agree that the women are coming across as very passive but how much is editing*? I don't trust TV. I am very cynical about how thngs are manipulated for "ratings".

Themostannoyingperson · 09/08/2017 21:53

I just caught this last night and was desperate to see a thread on it. The men were outrageous but I didn't' see the women do much but be on the defensive.
I didn't see earlier episodes but perhaps if a few on the women were hunters or carpenters it might have helped the dynamic.

cushioncovers · 09/08/2017 22:24

Going to watch it on catch up. But I'm not surprised it's distended into bullying competitiveness. I've always believed humans are only civilised because we have a structured society. Sad

cushioncovers · 09/08/2017 22:30

Wow this is uncomfortable to watch

Nellyphants · 09/08/2017 22:37

I thought the women were very passive but probably down to editing. Also wondered the point of their 'fighting' back. The men were determined to quash & silence the women. The plumber was a poisonous toad. The bit comparing breast size was truly disturbing

MineKraftCheese · 09/08/2017 22:39

Oli and that young student type with curly hair (sorry don't know his name, the one winding up Anton) are compete bullies.

MineKraftCheese · 09/08/2017 22:43

It seems like they have emotionally bullied Anton to the point of sending him crazy so they can vote him off. Can't believe they denied the conspiracy about winding him up to make him punch someone.

I feel like I'm watching a man being gaslit

Themostannoyingperson · 09/08/2017 22:48

Rob? What a dick.
Sorry but the women are buying into the bullying shit.
Brilliant Anton! Burn it all.

MineKraftCheese · 09/08/2017 22:49

Misogynistic women are misogynistic men's greatest weapon.

The Anton and Raph bromance was very ~feels

cushioncovers · 09/08/2017 22:50

Ooh they are dismantling the house that will piss off the group. Ollie is a real shit stirrer. Can't believe they are already deciding what they want from Anton and Ralph's house when they are still in it.

cushioncovers · 09/08/2017 22:51

Can't believe they denied the conspiracy about winding him up to make him punch someone

Me neither
