The trailer looks good but I've not seen the first series, will it be easy to watch without having seen it?

OP posts:
EllaHen · 27/07/2017 22:59

Am I the only one who would have jumped into Miranda's arms at the beach? That did make me laugh. Which was out of keeping for the rest of the episode.

Nicole Kidman was good.

I spent most of the episode complaining to dh about how all the men were cunts. Apart from the Dad, so he better not turn out to be the murderer.

Mrscaindingle · 27/07/2017 23:01

Don't think I'll be bothering with this and I had high hopes too, the male police seem just like they've stepped off the set in Life on Mars. And I am also getting sick of all the rape and gruesome murders of women on TV. I didn't really care about the teenage daughter and her parents were just unbelievable, her dad taking dessert into her room after she'd shagged her sleazy much older boyfriend who they had just met for the first time? Hmm

Clawdy · 27/07/2017 23:06

The actor playing the obnoxious teenager is Jane Campion's daughter. Jane C said she felt it was a brave decision for her to cast her own daughter. Hmm.......Hmm

Jijhebtseksmetezels · 27/07/2017 23:08

Yeah the tone is so uneven. And the cliched "feminist" conversation made them all look like twats.

And as the idea that your dad, no matter how liberal, would be ok with seeing your naked boyfriend's tushie on your bed just after you've introduced them! Like that would ever happen!

The daughter is not likeable. It's all a bit weird. The first series was so much better.

Cedilla · 27/07/2017 23:18

I gave up on the first series after about three eps but I'm trying again with this one.

I spent the whole of this first episode thinking I'd seen the repellent tosspot boyfriend somewhere before, but couldn't remember where. I just googled and he was the annoying banker brother in 'Follow the Money' just in case anyone else shares my addiction to BBC4 Scandi drama

dollypoodle · 27/07/2017 23:36

I wouldn't have recognised him from Follow the Money! Cedilla, glad you noticed.
His character was a bit pathetic in that, and really horrible in this.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 27/07/2017 23:44

I'm onto episode 2...

Graphista · 28/07/2017 00:31

Signing in. Not watched yet will watch on iplayer.

I saw and absolutely LOVED first series (and In the cut and the piano LOVE Jane campion too) I think her stuff DOES demand more from the viewer.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 28/07/2017 00:36

Just finished episode 2, I'm hooked.

InigoTaran · 28/07/2017 01:01

This is going to be a tricky thread with everyone watching episodes at different times!

AnyFucker · 28/07/2017 07:33

Does ep 2 get better ?

I don't mind my viewing a bit provocative but the young men sat round in the cafe with lap tops reviewing prostitutes made me feel sick

And the references to anal sex and inevitable young female nudity seemed shoehorned in for no reason I could see

AnyFucker · 28/07/2017 07:34

I loved Follow the money but didn't recognise the guy

NormaSmuff · 28/07/2017 07:36

going to watch this on iplayer after enjoying series 1, just checking in here for now.

Kinraddie · 28/07/2017 09:42

It was all quite unpleasant really; not many likeable characters and if that was my 17 year old daughter carrying on like that...!

TheHiphopopotamus · 28/07/2017 11:01

Yes, just watched episode 2 and it's much better.

AnyFucker · 28/07/2017 11:06

Will give it a go then

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 28/07/2017 16:47

I actually think the anal sex reference was relevent,it tied in with the general theme of the programme which is grim. I like the fact the characters are flawed and not instantly likeable.

I didn't like NK's mouth, I found it distracting as I mentioned earlier ,I think they've given her a gap in her teeth.

I didn't like the focus on the tall police woman ,but of course that also ties in with the general thinking that to be beautiful you have to be petite and porny and anything other than that your seen as a threat so something to ridicule.

buggerthebotox · 28/07/2017 17:05

This is so weird I can't keep up. It all seems to be on iPlayer at once. I'm on Episode 3. Or is it 4? Confused.

The misogyny is utterly grim.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 28/07/2017 17:51

Oh is it all on iPlayer now? I could only find 2 episodes yesterday.

AnyFucker · 28/07/2017 17:52

Ahhhh, lovely Brienne of Tarth

Have watched eps 2+3 and settling into it now. Robin always looks like she has a slightly nasty taste in her mputh. Mind you, she is surrounded by twats mainly.

AnyFucker · 28/07/2017 17:52

Whole series is on I player

InigoTaran · 28/07/2017 19:49

So...is it worth investing in, those of you who have watched a few episodes?

Inkanta · 28/07/2017 20:54

Why is the full series up on i Player!??

I don't get that Confused

TheHiphopopotamus · 28/07/2017 21:15

I think it's because they feel like they have to compete with companies such as Netflix or even Sky. Not sure why they would feel like that though, seeing as the BBC's subscription fee is compulsory.

Anyhow, I've just finished watching it all and overall, it wasn't quite as good as the first series. I think it could've done with another couple of episodes too. Won't spoiler it on this thread though.

buggerthebotox · 28/07/2017 21:35

I'll probably watch it all now, but "enjoy" isn't the word I'd use for the experience.

It's a bit too relentlessly grim for my taste.
