I go to work and this is what happens: the previous thread fills up when I have pertinent things to say! ShockWink

Hope nobody minds, I've taken the opportunity to start a new one before the Offspring demand food and the likes...

One of the masterful strikes of strategic genius of the new regime is the division and envy between everybody and everybody: men vs women, women in different roles vs other women, high ranking vs low ranking.
No solidarity is allowed - even the partnered Handmaids were half companion and have guard. Never knowing who might be an Eye and who to trust must be soul destroying.

I think Serena is quite a tragic figure - in the book and in the TV series. She must feel so betrayed by the ideals she fought for and that she is now kind of forced to uphold because otherwise what would her life be?? Admitting that she supporting a world view that while giving her some kind of social status by dint of her husband's role, considers her without value as she cannot have children would render everything she stands for invalid, and herself by extension.

The author who wrote a book about women being able to electrocute men by touch thereby causing a power change over (sorry, I cannot remember either name Blush) was talking on Radio Scotland today. She said the idea for her book came from when she wondered why so many mechanisms in society seem to go back to the fact that 'more men can throw a woman across a room than the other way around'. It's a depressing thought that physical strength underpins so much.

Very sobering. This could be many people, places in our world today Sad

Superpretzel · 09/07/2017 21:51

This programme has been so thoughtfully made - it's hard to watch but so important.

MrsPussinBoots · 09/07/2017 21:51

This makes it all so much more real. To see what the "escapees" have to do ...
not enjoying it this week.

Orlantina · 09/07/2017 21:59

This is so close to nowadays.

And people fleeing certain countries wouldn't be allowed into the US if they didn't have relatives there.

That was heartbreaking.

MelanieCheeks · 09/07/2017 22:02

It was the " god hates fags" graffiti that did it for me.

Tinkhasflown · 09/07/2017 22:02

It was hard to watch tonight. I felt stressed the whole way through.

Queenie yes I believe that was a rescued Handmaid.

Orlantina · 09/07/2017 22:05

The Guardians.....

Given that NRA video last week, you can see where the Guardians might come from.

Jijhebtseksmetezels · 09/07/2017 22:12

That was so good. I love how they're fleshing it all out. Is there going to be a second series because I can see how it could lead to a whole load of storylines.

mollymcmuffin · 09/07/2017 22:12

This makes it all so much more real. To see what the "escapees" have to do

What were they doing? I didn't get that bit

Orlantina · 09/07/2017 22:14

What were they doing

Trusting people. Being wary all the time. That fear of being caught when you're so close. Having to sell everything valuable to you just to escape.

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow1 · 09/07/2017 22:15

I don't think the unnamed woman was a rescued handmaid. they said that they pulled her out of a church hall where fertile women were being gathered up.

Orlantina · 09/07/2017 22:17

I was thinking of the Berlin wall during that episode. And also the resistance in WW2.

When a German commander in charge of Czechoslovakia was killed, a whole village (Lidice) was wiped off the map. All the women and children were sent to a concentration camp - except for some children who were given to SS officers families. The men were all executed. The whole village was then razed to the ground. Just as a reprisal.

Batteriesallgone · 09/07/2017 22:22

I thought she was rescued from a Red Centre - Handmaid training camp.

7Days · 09/07/2017 22:22

She was I Think, there was a flash if a red ear tag similar to Offreds. Maybe not assigned yet, still in 'training' if still in the school.
What was the music at the end? Mazzy Star?

TheweewitchRoz · 09/07/2017 22:31

Tough watch but another gripping episode.

NCforIS · 09/07/2017 22:32

I didn't see who got in the boat. Did the gay guy and the nun make it out too?

SomethingOnce · 09/07/2017 22:40

I was worried last week, or the week before, that the adaptation was going to disappoint after a promising start. Today's was brilliant, just brilliant.

Very much enjoying this thread, too. Keep up the good work Smile

PossumInAPearTree · 09/07/2017 22:46

This episode is very different to the book isn't it? I don't remember this resistance story in the book?

PacificDogwod · 09/07/2017 23:01

The fractured time line between 'before' and 'now' is really brining the heartbreak of the situation to the fore for me.

I am finding myself hoping that we will not see in as much detail what happens to June and Luke's daughter... Sad

How old is Hannah meant to be now?

TheNumberfaker · 09/07/2017 23:11

Just finished watching on +1.
Harrowing stuff.

TheNumberfaker · 09/07/2017 23:11

It's 3 years later now.

noblegiraffe · 09/07/2017 23:13

If you go to the Checkpoint Charlie Museum in Berlin they have exhibits of various ways that people tried to cross the border. I remember a car with an altered space in it for hiding people, and that people bought kits to build hot air balloons. This episode made that all seem more real.

And let's not forget the various ways that refugees try to make it into the UK/Europe. Those boats on the Mediterranean. Frozen in the back of lorries. Hiding in the wheel wells of aeroplanes.

Orlantina · 09/07/2017 23:16

3 years...

Does that mean OfRed already has another baby by another commander?

3 years under that regime.
