Gendry's biceps must be even more pumped after all that rowing.

Just watched trailers again. House Mormont sidil reminded me of poor old Jorah. Hope Sam Tarly can find a cure in one of those books.

ZedWoman · 16/05/2017 21:57

He's actually not that bad in the books.

He's worse! He arranged the murder of Jon Arryn with Lysa. He pushes Lysa out the moon door and frames Marillion for it. He provides Lyn Corbray with 'boys' in order to buy his favour. He sets Jeyne Poole up as a whore and Sells her to Roose Bolton as 'Arya'.

Oh, and it was Lothor Brune who saved Sansa from Marillion.

Littlefinger is the non-magical villain of the story.

expatinscotland · 16/05/2017 22:00

Jon was pretty gross, though, Lyssa was right in that he didn't want her, he wanted her father's swords, he used her. Littlefinger told Lothor to protect Sansa. And he's not worse than any of the others. Lyssa was fucking crazy and tried to kill her niece. Marmillion was a rapist.

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 16/05/2017 22:03

Oh I adore Littlefinger; great character.

Lysa was fucking mental and he was absolutely right to push her out the moon door.

fortyfourfeasts · 16/05/2017 22:15

Place marking! We recently starting re watching and are up to series 2, ep 3, or 4. Love how you see things differently when you don't have to concentrate on who's who!
I'm worried that Sansa may succumb to Littlefinger's plotting and start to play a darker game of her own. If there is a remaining Stark reunion, I can't see it being very harmonious - they've all been through so much, I can foresee power struggles!

twattymctwatterson · 16/05/2017 22:51

I've found my people! Currently just beginning reread no 3 in preparation for S7. Unfortunately I've already spoiled the entire series by reading leaks on Reddit 🙈

ZedWoman · 17/05/2017 06:44

I don't disagree that Lysa was utterly crazy. However, I still think Littlefinger is an utterly vile character - books and show. Plus, I don't think Harry the Arse is any great catch for Sansa. How many bastard children does he already have?

The Ghost of High Heart's prophesies in the book have all been pretty damn accurate. The maid slaying a giant in a snow castle may just refer to Sansa beheading Sweetrobin's doll in her snow Winterfell, but there can't be any coincidence in the fact that Baelish's house sigil is the Titan of Braavos.

She's still got that hairnet...

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 17/05/2017 10:14

there can't be any coincidence in the fact that Baelish's house sigil is the Titan of Braavos.

Littlefinger's house sigil is a mockingbird; he made it up himself.

iklboo · 17/05/2017 11:57

I want to see more Olenna Tyrell (Diana Rigg) and Lyanna Mormont. Kick ass ladies.

ZedWoman · 17/05/2017 13:18

Littlefinger's house sigil is a mockingbird; he made it up himself.

Littlefinger's personal sigil is the mockingbird. The Baelish house sigil is the face of the Titan of Braavos. Baelish shows Sansa the shield with the family sigil in his family's keep on the Fingers.

Whether it's of any significance or not (Checkov's gun springs to mind) I still think Sansa is going to be the one to bring Littlefinger down and I can't wait to see it happen.

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 17/05/2017 16:29

Littlefinger's personal sigil is the mockingbird. The Baelish house sigil is the face of the Titan of Braavos.

I've just looked it up. The titan of Braavos was The Barlish house's former sigil. The mockingbird is their current house sigil; not Littlefinger's personal one.

ZedWoman · 17/05/2017 17:28

Well, it seems even the book experts at Westeros.org cannot agree on the House Baelish official sigil. Much has been read into a single line in the book 'I prefer my mockingbird'.

asoiaf.westeros.org/index.php?/topic/100116-what-is-house-baelish-sigil/

It's all splitting hairs to be honest. Littlefinger is strongly associated with the Titan/savage giant and there are many references to this with respect to Sansa in the book.

Of course, it could mean that she will be the one to kill Un-Gregor, but I highly doubt it!

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 17/05/2017 17:36

Yeah, it doesn't really matter. I think it's definitely plausible that she could be Littlefinger's downfall.

I think she'll gain in power as she grows more and more in confidence, but hopefully won't lose what makes her her; she's my favourite character and I'd hate to see her change negatively.

ZedWoman · 17/05/2017 17:49

she's my favourite character and I'd hate to see her change negatively.

She is my absolute favourite character in the books. Her chapters are really well written and full of a girlish sensuality which is a credit to GRRM's ability to write outside his own skin.

On my first read of the books I bought into the idea that she was just annoying and superficial. On a careful re-read I can see that there are some really clever and subtle literary tricks which hint at the direction her story will take. In particular, it's fascinating to see how Sansa's chapters are often juxtaposed against Arya's and they have strikingly similar experiences along parallel paths. I think the two of them will be a formidable pair when they can get past the sibling squabbling.

Most importantly, I want Sansa to stop being the 'prize princess' who is only good for a political marriage to some 'deserving' noble for someone else's gains. She has shown a potential to be an influencer of others based on her social intelligence and empathy - unlike Littlefinger who can only manipulate based on financial greed or lust.

I don't like the direction they have taken with her in the show. Whilst I can understand it from a dramatic perspective (her book chapters in AFFC are quite slow) it feels way too much like squashing a square peg into a round hole.

Then again, she is not the only book character that they've made an utter mess of in the show.

ZedWoman · 17/05/2017 17:50

Oh dear....... I sound like such a book nerd (shrinks off quietly to go and join Westeros.org)

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 17/05/2017 17:52

I've loved Sansa from the moment I read her first chapter, and I adore her on he show too.

I like the direction the show has taken with her; I've really enjoyed it. I like her book storyline too, though.

I don't think they've made a mess of her character at all. In fact, I can't think of anyone I'm unhappy with (apart from Asha being called Yara!).

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 17/05/2017 17:53

Since you linked that site, I think you may have lost me the next several hours Grin

OlennasWimple · 17/05/2017 18:00

I like Sansa too, and I love that Sophie Turner has grown as an actress over the seasons - producers must take such a gamble casting children, this one definitely paid off (see also Maisie Williams)

Littlefinger is probably the least morally ambiguous character on the show (now that Ramsey is gone, anyway). Everything he does is to the benefit of Littlefinger. He will literally kill anyone who stands in the way of what he wants - Catelyn was probably the only one who he really cared for, and she is long gone.

ZedWoman · 17/05/2017 18:09

They made a mess of Asha Greyjoy.

I don't like their interpretation of Ellaria Sand - they should have just cast someone as Darkstar.

Show Tormund is a caricature Neanderthal. His book character has so much more depth. I almost shed a tear when I read the book bit about him killing his own son when he returned as a Wight.

Show Jaime's redemption arc has been pretty much non-existent. No clearing of the Riverlands/Harrenhal, no burning of the letter from Cersei and no smashing Red Ronnet Connington in the mouth before that wonderful line "her name is Brienne".

Paffle · 17/05/2017 18:16

Think I'm going to have to reread the books. But that means abandoning Rand, Mat and Perrin 5/14ths of the way through The Wheel of Time. Fantasy literature dilemma!

ZedWoman · 17/05/2017 18:21

I read the books shortly after the start of season 1 and must have speed read them half-asleep. I missed so many of the clues and 'Easter eggs' that jumped out on a re-read.

I started re-reading last December and I am surprised how different so many of the book character are from their show counterparts.

Tyrion is so much less pleasant in the books, the Hound is so much younger and more volatile, Cersei is way more batshit crazy and Jon Snow is far more calculating. Varys is still an enigma to me - book and show.

TitilatedOcelot · 17/05/2017 18:42

Paffle - didn't Robert Jordan die before finishing Wheel of Time? Really hoping ASOIAF doesn't go the same way!

Logolphin · 17/05/2017 19:23

Don't abandon Rand Mat and Perrin!

Gallavich · 17/05/2017 19:24

Don't give up on the wheel of time! It's too good

MyCatsHateMLMtoo · 17/05/2017 19:45

Can I join the discussion. I have read the books, watched the series to date and am now working my way through the CD spoken word versions. Book 1, in two separate parts is almost 34 hours and book 2 (also in two separate parts) is just over 37 hours Shock. I listen in the car driving to and from work and can't wait to get into car Grin. On Friday I have a six hour drive and am actually looking forward to the invariable M6 traffic jam that'll extend it longer.

Anyway, my pennyworth is that all factions will have to unite against the whitewalkers in series 7/8. There are several strong women characters so I'd like one of those to win (but not Cercei).
