Just wondered if anyone had started this. I did yesterday. It's slightly strange but yet makes me want to watch more.

OP posts:
DontFuckingSayIt · 16/04/2017 19:10

I'm afraid I also thought it was a bit daft. Trust me I understand depression and, to some extent, suicide, but I can't imagine anybody making such a song and dance about it. She clearly didn't doubt that everybody would be thrilled to listen to her ramblings.

MadMags · 16/04/2017 19:13

She's a teen, ffs!

I think we can all agree that teenagers are fans of a bit of drama.

FreeNiki · 16/04/2017 19:19

Not knowing there was a copy and knowing those tapes would potentially get them all in deep shit, not one of them destroyed the tapes. They actually passed them on including to someone they knew might rat them out: Clay.

It is just so unbelievable and full of holes.

MadMags · 16/04/2017 19:22

They all knew there was a copy in a safe place. Tony had them didn't he?

FreeNiki · 16/04/2017 20:09

So Hannah see another woman raped and she doesnt call the police?

FreeNiki · 16/04/2017 20:09

This gets worse.

NormaSmuff · 16/04/2017 20:28

dd and i have made a plan to watch it together

LostMyDotBrain · 16/04/2017 21:14

As for hannah killing herself over that?

She kills herself for multiple reasons, some far more serious than others. It's probably a good idea to engage your brain though before declaring what reasons are and aren't adequate to commit suicide.

50shadesOfMarasme · 16/04/2017 21:49

Norma - how old is your DD?
I would have liked to think that I'd watch it with mine, eventually, but the stuff toward the end... I'm not sure.

Niki - just finish the whole series and come back after.

FreeNiki · 16/04/2017 23:50

I dont get bit with the stop sign. Even if the girl had reported it there and then, no one could have got there in time to repair that to prevent the accident the same night very shortly after. And a repair probably would have been logged for the next day anyway hence it would still happen.

The death was no ones fault. Why did they think that was something to hide for that girl who knocked it down. She was to report it when she got home.

Having got to the end...I think its just daft

NormaSmuff · 17/04/2017 01:45

my dd is 17, 50 shades

Thingsgettingstranger · 17/04/2017 09:18

I watched it with both my teens (16 and 17). They liked it.

PossumInAPearTree · 17/04/2017 14:20

Am watching it with 16yo Dd.

Interestingly she just commented saying "what kind of idiot gets undressed with the curtains open". I pointed out we should be blaming the pervert stalker not someone in their own home. She grudgingly agreed but says Hannah is still an idiot.

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 17/04/2017 15:06

FreeNiki because not only is there a possibility that accident could have been prevented (no matter how small a possibility), or the fact that the stop sign was knocked down due to Sheri being careless, there's the blame too. Weren't there people suggesting Jeff was to blame? Drunk driving? The guy ended up dead and an old man ended up disabled all because Sheri was looking for a blinking phone charger while driving!

Sorry, but I agree that it's opinions like yours that cause a need for such things.

I found the suicide scene horrible too, although I actually liked Hannah and had a fondness for her (and a serious envy of her looks!).

I wasn't keen on Tony though. Yep, he'd been given a responsibility but he seemed so full of self importance and plain irritating. I was glad he told her parents at the end too, he almost became part of 'it' by not doing something that would have helped after, and possibly even have prevented the death of Alex.

overitalready · 17/04/2017 17:12

im on episode 3 & hasnt grabbed me yet..im waiting

FirstSeemItThenBeIt · 17/04/2017 17:25

At this point I can't see me sitting through 13 reasons. 4, 5, tops.

It reminds me of Dawson's Creek or My So-Called Life. Over-verbal solipsistic American teens.

And if it transpires that there's no solid reason for people not just saying 'oh you've only just got the tapes? Here's what she says' I'll be bloody annoyed. It just seems a crappy plot device to string the show out.

illegitimateMortificadospawn · 17/04/2017 17:31

Anyone else wonder what state the parents were in after sitting through the 13 (14?) sides of tape? I wouldn't like to guess at their state of mind.

There were lots of things that were silly - most particularly Clay dragging the whole thing out when all the other characters who had already listened said that they did it in an evening. Hmm That said, it made for compulsive viewing.

The second rape was even grimmer than the first one and hard to watch, but more truthful than most TV shows that use rape as a convenient plot point. I don't know whether that's a good thing or a bad thing. It did at least show how circumstances arise where a young woman can find herself in a compromising position & it was at least unequivocal in both cases that the rapes were non-consensual.

FreeNiki · 17/04/2017 23:23

Im not sure why Hannahs parents werent a reason on the tapes

They ignored her due to their money problems.

illegitimateMortificadospawn · 17/04/2017 23:49

Someone said upthread (or maybe on another 13 reasons one) that they couldn't understand why she committed suicide when she'd be leaving for college soon. However, one of the things she offered up to help save her parents' business was her college fund. I got the impression she was starting to feel that escape (to college) may not have been possible because of financial pressures on her family.

FreeNiki · 20/04/2017 00:37

ShoutOutToMyEx · 20/04/2017 10:47

I actually really agree with what Niki just posted. I'd be really concerned about a teen with suicidal ideation watching this.

FreeNiki · 20/04/2017 11:16

This reply has been deleted

Message withdrawn by MNHQ as it contained rather graphic details about suicide method. Not breaking Talk Guidelines, as such, but we received several reports about it and thought it prudent to take it down.

SumThucker · 20/04/2017 12:50

I agree with you Niki. My 12 year old is asking to watch it, because "everyone in my class has" Hmm

BlueKarou · 20/04/2017 13:06

I'm struggling through the series, only on ep 4 or 5, yet I remember tearing through the book when I read it. The reading was a long while ago, so I'm a bit hazy on the details. I'm trying to hold back judgement until I'm finished watching. I don't think the stuff with Hannah's parents was in the book (need to reread) so that's come as a bit of a surprise.

FreeNiki · 20/04/2017 14:36

It didnt ring true that she decides to try life again and deliberately storms off from the counsellor wanting him to follow and waiting. Because he didnt follow when she flounces she goes home and does it.

Right.
