Exactly, patriarchy and misogeny as alive and well there. So the women are not capable of looking after themselves, that they need a man to do it for them Hmm. Polygamy is a set up, that it benefits men, and allows them to dominate women, I cannot think of many advantages for the women, except on tap child care, and they constantly have company.

The lady that was pregnant, was deeply unhappy, as was the other one with glasses. I think the addition of the two wives and their families will tip them over the edge. Oh yes Marina, I can see her leaving quite soon, when the other two wives and their families move in, in fact she said she may leave.

The men are just having their cake and eating it, and they have the women just where they want them.

The couple in the monogamous relationship are so NOT on the same page. I liked the wife - she had some uumph. There's going to be a hell of a lot of teen sexual tension going through those tightly clasped hands though.

^^ this

teainbed · 31/03/2017 14:42

Are they 'allowed' to leave? I mean I know everyone is allowed but do you get shunned by your community, do you get to take your kids if you were to leave? I hope there is some sort of refuge or charity that can support women like this.

lazymum99 · 31/03/2017 15:40

On a practical note, where does the money to finance this community come from. They've got nice houses, medical insurance by the looks of it, nice clothes. Last week he worked on the land. Im not sure what work Abel did.
PPs who refer to the women getting lone parent benefits. This is the USA there are no benefits like here.
Are the kids home schooled? Surely they would get teased terribly at school.
The women look seriously unhappy or slightly deranged. Abel himself has to constantly deal with the jealousy etc. Who on earth could be bothered with this set up. I'm not a man but please tell me all this shit can't be worth the constant supply of sex.
Also, they all look similar. Last week I wasn't always sure who was who. There is obviously some inter breeding going on! If you and your brothers father about 20 kids each.......

MamOfTwo · 31/03/2017 16:01

Caught this last night - thought it was a one-off. So does the programme focus on a different family each week? I need to know how the five wives thing works out (I'm guessing - not well).

expatinscotland · 31/03/2017 16:50

'This is the USA there are no benefits like here.'

Yes, there are, and depending on the state, some are more generous than others. These people work the system, they get their community designated as a 'place of worship'/church which have charity status and therefore eek out of paying property taxes and lots of other tax normal families pay. They work cash in hand a lot, too. Sometimes the girls age 16+ are sent out to work as au pairs/nannies outside the community for $7/hour or so cash in hand. The kids usually got to a school in the community so they go alongside all the other poly kids.

lazymum99 · 31/03/2017 18:28

I just read your previous posts Expat. I had no idea the US had such a benefit system. We are led to believe that you are left to starve there.

lazymum99 · 31/03/2017 18:29

I'd like to know what they are doing constantly their phones/tablets.

Hopefully contacting an organisation that can help them leave.

expatinscotland · 31/03/2017 18:42

'I just read your previous posts Expat. I had no idea the US had such a benefit system. We are led to believe that you are left to starve there.'

It varies a lot by state, but plenty of states are quite generous, and there are in-work benefits like food cards. The second wife works so will complete taxes as a lone parent since she has her own apartment, they tweak the system like that. The big thing is they make the community a 'place of worship/church' and so get out of paying a whole lot of taxes normal people pay. They are fucking fiddlers in addition to brainwashing perverts.

purplecoathanger · 31/03/2017 18:47

Angry
expatinscotland · 31/03/2017 18:57

Well, they are! It's well-known, too. They have their own banks, even. There are a number of programmes in the US about people leaving such communities.

Toddlerteaplease · 31/03/2017 20:33

Just catching up with last nights now. Resisting the urge to throw the IPad across the room. Can't that twat Abel se how unhappy his wives are. What an awful man.

lalaland1985 · 01/04/2017 14:41

It's right royally fucked up. Joseph Smith, the founder of the Mormon church had 14 wives!

The mainstream Mormon church does not practice polygamy because it became illegal in the state of Utah. They do however believe they will become gods themselves and have multiple wives in the next life.

A man whose wife passes away can marry another woman in the Mormon temple. They both believe that in the next life the man will still be married to his first wife and also his second. A female whose husband passes away can not get married again in the Mormon temple as she cannot be married to more than one man in the next life.

mrsBeverleygoldberg · 03/04/2017 14:08

Just finished the second episode. Marrying his brother's wives to give them financial stability and a understandable place in their society is what I thought it meant. But, they're expecting they'll have dcs with him! That is so wrong. Women are treated as a sex/baby production line. Awful.

Pemba · 04/04/2017 05:44

Just watched ep. 2 and agree that both Beth and Marina seemed deeply unhappy. How could Marina not know what she was getting into though? - as wife no 3 she doesn't really have so much right to be the jealous one. Beth seems angry and depressed, she had little patience with the kids. I don't think their family setup will survive, especially if Abel's brother's widows are brought into the mix.

Agree that Abel is a knob - why do they all want him so much? - Enoch (was it?) last week seemed nicer (but he had a weird nose!).

Why don't the young people (especially females) just leave and get a job in the city, and find themselves a monogamous partner from the normal LDS church (or elsewhere)? They seem quite personable and intelligent, so should cope in the real world. Are they all that brainwashed?

Nodowntime · 06/04/2017 14:54

It was fascinating tv! I have some theories about the wives' motives (apart from religious) in wanting to share their husband...no time to write at length for now...but did some interesting googling.

This is about this community, it says Enoch is going to marry Lydia!

MamOfTwo · 06/04/2017 21:08

Anyone watching? Can't believe it looks like Abel is going to marry Jim's wives!

expatinscotland · 06/04/2017 21:09

Abel's a fucking creep.

expatinscotland · 06/04/2017 21:10

These gals are deluded and brainwashed.

MamOfTwo · 06/04/2017 21:12

Completely agree. I would like to see a follow-up programme with 'escapees' of this lifestyle.

expatinscotland · 06/04/2017 21:14

No concern for these women at all, they're just possessions, like it or lump it.

kelashan · 06/04/2017 21:14

Fuck that Abel is a creep! Does anyone think he's going to go through with marrying the other two??

Friolero · 06/04/2017 21:14

Jim's wives don't sound too keen, I hope they decide not to marry Abel. Can't he see how sad Beth and Marina are?
