I don't think it's that implausible that sharon got back quickly. She was in Italy, not Borneo. Loads of cheap airlines fly at unsociable hours.

Also, weren't Louise and Denny sleeping at Ian's that night so would have been there in the Kiddy cupboard

I didn't think of the losing z friend aspect. It changes the dynamic doesn't it? Carmel is the best friend and mother and now has to play MiL too essentially.
