My husband (who spent most of the show saying 'what happened in the last series?' and 'wasn't he in the thick of it?') reckons Thandie's husband is up to no good too. I had thought it more likely to be someone inside the police who knows how to plant evidence and the likely pressure to find a culprit.

stonecircle · 27/03/2017 12:31

Surely too obvious for it to be the husband?

hackmum · 27/03/2017 12:32

About Thandie's husband - the "husband of the lead detective is the killer" idea has been used in two very well-known police procedurals in the past few years. I won't say what they are in case anyone hasn't seen them, but some of you will know what I'm talking about. So I think it would be unlikely for Line of Duty to go down that route. I'm sure Mercurio has lots of twists and turns in store for us over the next few episodes.

buggerthebotox · 27/03/2017 13:00

I think Ifield knew that Thandie wasn't dead. He's a bloody forensic expert, ffs! I reckon there's more to him than a saw-happy killer. I reckon he came at her with the saw because he knew she was going to wake up. He's threatening her for some reason...no idea what, though.

Why did Ifield wear the balaclava? Mmm...too obvious for him to be Balaclava Man, so perhaps to disguise himself for some other reason? So that he wouldn't be recognised when buying the stuff at B and Q?

Why did he harvest Hana's print at the café? Maybe he thinks Hana herself is part of the plot, whatever that is. I think Hana is part of the plot too.

Farmer is not the perpetrator, though, is he? An easy scapegoat, though.

CoolCarrie · 27/03/2017 13:11

Think you are on to something there PP

TheHiphopopotamus · 27/03/2017 13:18

If he knew she was going to wake up, wouldn't he have tied her up in case she woke up when he was out? And would he have bothered getting all the power tools and plastic sheeting if he wasn't going to harm her in some way. Seems a tad elaborate just to threaten her.

Idbemonica1 · 27/03/2017 13:23

Loved the first 3 series and really enjoyed last night's episode, but as is usual for the end of the first episode of a new series I'm left wondering where on earth is this going?
Also, I'm sure that Kate's getting worse every time she goes undercover.

oldmum22 · 27/03/2017 14:14

Just watched it and jumped out of my skin at the ending. I think there might be a copycat balaclava man and out of the characters shown so far, Huntleys husband is first on my list. There is also a detective with a short beard and sideburns who informed SIO Huntley about Kate being in the office ,he looks dodgy as well . I could listen to Adrian Dunbarr reading the phone book to me for hours ...lovely accent

BakeOffBiscuits · 27/03/2017 14:22

I'm so glad I found this thread!

I was watching it with DH, he is a scary cat and turned over the channel when the man got his chain saw out, so I don't know she had woken up. I've just texted DH to tell him and he thinks I'm winding him upGrin

Anyway it was brilliant last night, though I did miss CaddyHmm

I think TN will persuade balaclava man to let her go somehow and will then be bribing him to do naughty stuff! I think she's the new Caddy! probably way off the mark

LaMigraine · 27/03/2017 14:47

Ifield wore the balaclava in the car park of the DIY store as he knew images of him would get picked up on CCTV and so the assumption would be that balaclava man was the one who went to the DIY store and bought a biohazard suit, chainsaw, etc. So I think he was planning to set balaclava man up as Thandie's killer. Maybe. Grin

hackmum · 27/03/2017 15:17

I'm pretty sure you're right, LaMigraine - a storyline used, incidentally, in the last series of Happy Valley.

Starting to wonder if there are any original plotlines when it comes to police procedurals.

buggerthebotox · 27/03/2017 16:06

Mmm...maybe Ifield did intend to kill Thandie. However wouldn't he have checked properly that she was dead? And, if he had intended to cut her up, wouldn't he have taken her somewhere else to do it?

Unless, of course, he would get first dibs at the crime scene anyway, in which case he could easily falsify the forensics?

I'm going to watch it again, just for the purposes of thus thread of course...........Wink

BringMeTea · 27/03/2017 16:08

Frankly I'm disappointed. Too Dexter and not credible in a way previous 3 were. Bah!

PossumInAPearTree · 27/03/2017 16:09

Cutting a body up in the privacy of your own home has got to be safer than taking a body somewhere and doing it. Less likely to be seen. He can spend time doing a thorough clean afterwards. Plus if it went according to plan his flat would never be searched because they'd never suspect him.

I think ambling about in a balaclava and then swapping to a baseball cap in b&q car park and then going in the store is risky.

Ciaovenora · 27/03/2017 16:41

The season three trailer posted long before the episode last night clearly shows Thandie makes it out alive.

www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p04t7wgb

TheHiphopopotamus · 27/03/2017 16:48

Yeah, but is that red herring ciao?

I don't trust 'em. I bloody hope TN makes it out alive though, I think she's brilliant. She was amazing in Westworld.

Ciaovenora · 27/03/2017 17:01

Unless the plan is to jump the shark completely the trailer clearly shows Thanide being interviewed by AC 12 in a future episode, on that basis I am confident shes alive and well. Not so sure about Tim.

Tim is not the killer, sure hes super dodgy its not clear what hes up too, why was Thandies husband not available when the abduction was being committed why did he follow her to Tim's house.

buggerthebotox · 27/03/2017 17:42

I don't understand the husband visiting Tim's house either. If he'd taken the phone to her, which I assume he had, why did he not just give it to her at Tim's door? She was ringing for ages..

Did she leave her phone at home to avoid triangulation? I thought the scene where the husband found the phone, then asked the kids what the problem with mum was, was a bit clunky...kind of deliberate. Why didn't he just say "I'm popping out to take mum her phone" or some such?

And why, if Tim knew it was Thandie at the door, did he let her in if he hadn't a reason to?

Doesn't make sense.

I'm wondering if Thandie is protecting the husband?

QueenieGoldstein · 27/03/2017 18:01

Unless the AC12 interview is a flashback to a previous case. TN's boss keeps making a big thing of trusting her etc etc. Makes me think there was a corruption charge previously that she dodged.

EachandEveryone · 27/03/2017 18:32

Did Adrian Dunbar have a drink problem or am I getting mixed up with Prine Suspect/The Fall/Cracker?

Ciaovenora · 27/03/2017 18:32

It would be absurd to kill off a main character arc in the first episode for the third time, if they have indeed done a flashback to a interview in the past the show will have lost all credibility!

Sadly, I think the first episode left much to be desired, the story arcs they have created are simply not credible same could be said for the acting, am hoping its rectified in future episodes.

ktel1 · 27/03/2017 18:34

Steve seems reluctant to pursue this.

He stated early on that he didn't think there was a case to answer

Later when he was talking to the girl who was supposedly raped by the suspect he didn't press when there was obvious doubt.

I wonder if his professional ambition will compromise his integrity in some way during the case.

Ciaovenora · 27/03/2017 18:36

Ted has marriage problems!

He also likes to order a steak on the odd occasion he gets out.

Kate and Steve squabbling while looking to Ted for validation was strange to watch. Did they forget last year all ready.

EmilyDickinson · 27/03/2017 18:40

I think that Ted Hastings (the Adrian Dunbar character) has some kind of financial problem which I think he has kept quiet as in theory he'd be bribable because of it, but, being Ted he's incorruptible. He's also unhappily married (did he and his wife separate last series?) but determined to be loyal to his marriage vows. He's very clear on what's right and wrong. No shades of grey for Ted.

buggerthebotox · 27/03/2017 18:53

emily I'm not so sure about Ted's being uncorruptible...I hope he's not.

But there were a couple of times in the previous series that left me wondering about him. He has financial difficulties (or had) which he is keeping hidden, he was preyed on by dodgy Gill last series and wasn't tempted in the end, and he's a Mason which probably leaves him vulnerable to loyalty to a possible corrupt fellow Mason (such as the George Costigan character in the last series).

Steve and Kate both have history of dodginess too. Steve was manipulated by Denton, and Kate was seeing Akers' husband in a previous series.

That's what's so good-the characters are all multi-faceted, so more interesting because of it.
