Who builds libraries any more? They close them down usually.

absolutelynotfabulous · 01/03/2017 19:21

I'm guessing that Paula knew Ellen would put her on the spot and had actually prepared the presentation in advance.

The80sweregreat · 01/03/2017 19:23

Maybe ellens hubby and paula are in it together?

Goldenbear · 01/03/2017 19:36

I found it quite gripping but my husband who is an Architect was getting frustrated with some technical inaccuracies. He said the same about libraries as the above poster. He works for a design led Architects but we only know two Architects with the amazing homes - the Directors!

Bestthingever · 01/03/2017 20:05

Goldenbears I always wanted to marry an architect when I was little because my df had a lot of friends who were architects and they all had fab houses! However they all had their own practices so I guess that's why.

CoffeeCoffeeAndLotsOfIt · 01/03/2017 20:11

Just re-watched it again today. Think I enjoyed it more the second time :)

Doobigetta · 01/03/2017 22:24

I really enjoyed this, and I can't believe anyone is on team Paula- she's awful! I can't see anything wrong with Ellen except that she failed to set her boundaries in the first place.

HakeLively · 01/03/2017 22:47

It did escalate pretty quickly with the tension building between Ellen and Paula. The actress who plays Paula totally reminds me of a young Emma Thompson...don't know why...she's very good, I wonder if she's done quite a bit of theatre.

RainbowJack it reminded me of that Hermione Norris drama too.

leccybill · 01/03/2017 23:03

Another one totally fangirling over Vicky McClure here. She was incredible in This is England (scenes with her father and the post natal depression storyline) and in everything since. One of Britain's finest actresses.

Team Ellen here- Paula is far too smug. She reminds me of Rachel in This Life - remember when she was walloped at the wedding?!

ArriettyClock1 · 01/03/2017 23:44

I think life is imitating art somewhat as Vicky McClure is a far better actor than Morven Christie.

diddl · 02/03/2017 08:21

Can't decide if MC is a bad actress or always playing irritating women!

absolutelynotfabulous · 02/03/2017 11:50

I didn't like her in A Word either and annoying in this too so maybe a one-trick pony? Vicky McClure is completely oyt-acting her.

Saw her in a,production called Touch about women during WW2.

This is England is fab (but a hard watch).

The80sweregreat · 02/03/2017 13:47

Paula must have a daughter as she said she took her to another library and she said 'shhh' ( when she did the presentation).
seeing the spoiler after the credits, seems to be another woman on the scene!

ElenaGreco123 · 02/03/2017 17:54

The daughter was sitting in the car when Paula and family were arguing. It looked rather sinister on film, but who never argues in the car?!

OhTinky · 02/03/2017 19:46

Lots of hot husbands! And I liked a lot of the clothing too and the cute cobbled street Ellen lives on.
I liked that there wasn't a whole dramatic waters breaking in middle of meeting/screaming labour scenes. Reminds me of some Sophie Hannah novels. Will deffo be tuning in to next episode!

Figgygal · 02/03/2017 19:50

I watched it I thought I Ella was really annoying total control freAk I couldn't see exactly what Paula was doing wrong just trying to do her job and trying to be friendly.

Dougray Scott will have something to do with his wife or will get with Paula and find out she killed her.

carabos · 02/03/2017 21:02

I think the director woman was summoning Ellen to the site because she was concerned about Ellen's work, not Paula's. Ellen has no way of knowing that now and that's going to send her in the wrong direction vis a vis Paula. The director's death is somehow going to be positive for Ellen in the short term, but not ultimately.

Groovee · 03/03/2017 06:22

I quite enjoyed it. Be interesting to see how things develop.

Arcadia · 03/03/2017 09:08

Does anyone know why she was sitting in her car eating pizza at the time that she received the call from boss lady?

Optimist1 · 03/03/2017 09:26

She'd been out driving pretty aimlessly, Arcadia, telling the baby that this is mummy's office and so on. I got the impression she just needed to have some thinking time (and then got a bit peckish, hence the pizza).

Arcadia · 03/03/2017 09:33

Oh ok!

I think boss lady called her because someone had put the idea in her head that husband was having an affair with someone at work.

The80sweregreat · 03/03/2017 11:16

ds was watching it and i caught the ending again- Ellen was doing work from home and she mumbled something to herself about ' she is having to go and do something monumental' in other words really mess it all up. not long later the boss, kay, dies!
made me think!

allchattedout · 03/03/2017 11:26

The husband seemed staggeringly young for a psychiatrist though

Agree. The actor is 33. The couple met when he was treating her, so he would have had to be qualified for quite a long time. According to the internet, qualifying as a psychiatrist takes a further 6 years after foundation training. The youngest he could be to be fully qualified is 31. In which case he must have been a trainee when he met her. Might have been better if they cast an older actor to play him.

GMOOH · 03/03/2017 14:15

Enjoyed it, found it very creepy. Absolutely no idea what to think about Kay's death - suicide? Murder? A set up? If the latter two then who?

noradurst · 03/03/2017 17:23

I really enjoyed it - bonkers but very fun and thrilling.

I am definitely Team Paula for the moment! Started to warm to Ellen when she started to cackle away to her baby though - I dread to think what that says about me.

I think the problem with liking Ellen that much is Morven Christie isn't as good an actress as Vicky McClure. She started to annoy me too on S3 of Line of Duty, but she seems to be relishing playing villainous, so it's fun to watch her grappling at Ellen's bump and undermining her. Also, Morven Christie played Ellen as so tight lipped and smug in the beginning (ditto Dougray Scott being so creepy and touchy-feely) that I sort of hoped Paula would win.

I did think that it was slightly hampered - at least in the plausibility/feeling-for-Ellen stakes - by being just an hour, because it all happened so quickly and Ellen seemed to be overreacting and snapping at every last thing. Being gaslit like that though is my worst nightmare. Also, it doesn't help that Morven Christie looks super young to be such a high-ranking architect with such a good career, so her husband being a qualified psychiatrist who also treated her seemed a little ????

My bold prediction right now is similar to above: I reckon Ellen's husband is the villain. He knows she feels threatened by Paula so he's been playing them off one another - how did she get his number? - by telling Ellen to 'accept' her and creating more conflict between Paula and Ellen because he knows she'll do something to annoy Ellen. He doesn't want Ellen to be a career woman and hopes to scare her away from ever going back to work and being a meek housewife. He was suspiciously nowhere to be seen when Kay died, and he even has the Norma Bates style psychiatrist mother! IMO, he's already a villain by sleeping with a vulnerable patient (isn't that illegal?) after her mother died.

I'm hoping Paula is the villain though, so she can unleash her full Fatal Attraction craziness. Paula is creepy anyway, and so is her husband.
