Starting this one as I finished last one...

So, Daniela I think will win as it looks like it's been written/plotted that way since the beginning..

I don't think Daniela is either outstandingly good or bad - she's fine, she's okay.

That's why the mega enthusiasm of the judges is so weird.

The first time she appeared, Daniel and Kelly bigger her up so much, I thought - 'Does she know them?' - it was just like ridiculous.

But here she is in the final - quelle surprise!

Saw it coming from her first appearance and it had nothing to do with her design - and everything to do with what the judges were signalling in the voiceover.

'Hey viewers, Daniela is good, good good...'

Bit brainwashy without ever really explaining why she is better than the others.

I don't think she's bad - but there is not enough discernible difference to justify the bigging up that she gets.

Written in the stars eh?

The before & after looked like different filters on the camera as well. Brown or grey for before shots, clear or yellow for the after shots to lift everything & make it look sunny & bright. Plus extra lighting.

Nodowntime · 21/01/2017 00:14

Iklboo, yes, it was really strange, as if we weren't shown what the rooms actually looked like at the beginning of each episode, who were they kidding?Confused

Just got round to leafing through last Sunday Sunday Times, and there is a spread on Daniel Hopwood's doing up his flat (took him 12 years to get round to it). At the end there's a bit about GIDC, I've taken a picture, two things made me laugh, that he "adores KH", and that "the standard of contestants is higher than ever"Shock

Oh, and his flat looked really disappointing, very much modern hotel style, and plasticky Confused

Ha, and in his flat "an ambient glow is cast from numerous concealed LED strips"Grin

But, I think he didn't win because he didn't stretch himself more, especially with the colours he chose.

By that logic, how did Daniela 'stretch; herself with the colours she chose.- she painted two rooms white and stuck faux marble wallpaper and left raw plaster on the third. Not much stretching going on there. The most exciting thing she did was that ugly cabinet job for the TV with the black tape squares and writing a few words in felt tip on a couple of posters.

The only thing Oliver got criticised for was not putting some art on that empty wall above the sofa bed in the study and not dressing the bed. That was it. They loved his kitchen, Sophie's face absolutely lit up when she entered his rooms and the client was over the moon.

And he still lost?

I've never been one to jump on the 'he was robbed' bandwagon in these TV competitions but on this occasion it was so blatantly the wrong decision - my jaw dropped open when they said 'Daniela'. I still can't quite believe it to be honest. Her rooms were absolute unpractical, unliveable horrors. The kitchen looked like it was designed by Bet Lynch, the bedroom was a white box with a bed in it and a stapled floaty light, and the lounge - I have no words for that lounge - it was as bad as it gets.

Confused
hollyisalovelyname · 21/01/2017 01:46

I liked Daniella's bedroom- the black and white. I hated the living room and kitchen. Perhaps if they had turned on the fire it might have warmed up the room. I didn't like any of Oliver's rooms in the final but I do think he is a talented interior designer.
I liked his patterned dining room in the thatched cottage and really disliked Nicholas's two rooms in the semi final. Too much pine and the dining room was too dark and blue.
Wasn't the castle a beautiful place to live.
Was the Mumsnetter the lady who didn't like anything Richard suggested or the couple ?

NormaSmuff · 21/01/2017 07:10

no the mumsnetter was part of the couple

ppeatfruit · 21/01/2017 08:54

But holly you use admit Oliver's kitchen was 100% more practical and attractive then D's stupid fake marble walled , plastic\ glass doored cupboards. One bout of cooking a steak in there and you'd have to spend the rest of the week cleaning it. Grin

ppeatfruit · 21/01/2017 08:55

oh silly spell checker! You MUST admit Blush

LIZS · 21/01/2017 09:18

What was the room budget for the semis? I can't imagine that Laura Ashley fabric and wallpaper came in under £1000.

ppeatfruit · 21/01/2017 09:42

Fontella I agree, Oliver 'WOZ ROBBED' Grin

ElspethFlashman · 21/01/2017 09:44

£4K

hollyisalovelyname · 21/01/2017 11:08

Ppea
Neither kitchen was good.
Did the green chair block the exit or was that just a window?
I'd hate such a narrow kitchen and not a lot you could do with either kitchen.
I love Sophie's style usually but the floral skirt and Breton striped top were awful together.
Loved another combo she wore on the show.
And those earrings Shock

ppeatfruit · 21/01/2017 11:18

Yer those earrings!! or should we call them scissorings Grin Grin

Fontella · 21/01/2017 13:40

Here's an article in the Mail showing pictures of all the rooms - there are only 8 comments but every single one says 'Oliver Wuz Robbed'.

Looking at those pics, I disagree with Daniel about dressing the bed. With that incredibly strong wallpaper, and then all the velvet curtains - it could easily have been too much. There's a photo in the article, taken from a different angle looking back towards the door and you can get a better effect of the wallpaper etc. Maybe not white bedding - maybe a darker shade would have made it look more sumptuous, but I can kind of see what he was trying to do - with the very colourful patterned walls etc - to pull it back with plain bedding.

For those saying they liked Daniela's bedroom, I think these photos illustrate what I mean. It's a white room, with white bedside shelves, two white shaded lamps and a white floaty light. Where''s the design in that? There's no design in it. And that living room of hers (shudder). Shock

I think these pictures only confirm for me, why I prefer Oliver's work, and I'm sorry others disagree, but I think he did a fantastic job with that kitchen, given the size and shape of it. It looks bright, airy, finished, practical and more importantly - useable!

ZaZathecat · 21/01/2017 14:27

Just had a look at the pictures, Fontella, and it reminded me how awful Daniela's kitchen looked to me - especially the pic that showed the rose gold mirrored base unit next to the old washing machine!
In the end though, I guess the contestant who gets the most work in the future will be the one whose designs we the public liked, not necessarily the winner or even a finalist.

C8H10N4O2 · 21/01/2017 14:32

Even in those pictures Daniella's living room looks like a public toilet with some cheap effects added. Having tried the 'tape' patterning myself in the distant past I found it rapidly became tatty and tacky - big mistake.

The bedroom looked a bit spartan and unfinished and just cold. I'm mystified as to how she won when other contestants have been heavily penalised for not finishing properly.

I've quite like some of the rooms she has done in the series but I agree the general standard seems more 'changing rooms' this year and she was not the best of the bunch. Oliver's style is not mine but was much more considerate of the fact that someone has to live in the rooms after they have been photographed.

NormaSmuff · 21/01/2017 14:52

daniella got a first class degree in textiles and fashion.
they were probably swayed by that

ChippyMinton · 21/01/2017 15:05

Sophie acknowledges the scissor earings on her instagram - made from mirrored perspex, which is why her earlobes haven't fallen off.

Nodowntime · 21/01/2017 15:06

Sophie was often wearing outrageous (humorous) earrings in the previous series! It's one of her trademarks, along with colourful tights and dresses.

I bet it wouldn't be Daniella who won if Sophie was the judge this year...why even invite her as a guest judge when obviously her opinion didn't count?Confused

If there is a backlash towards Daniella(don't use Twitter/Instagram etc), I do feel sorry for her, after all, she didn't proclaim herself the winner, the backlash should be towards the judges!

Fontella · 21/01/2017 15:19

That's true. They are the ones who chose her. Although I disagree with their decision, it's nothing personal against Daniela - I liked her! It was just those bloody awful rooms. To be honest I wasn't that impressed with her designs all the way through.

But I suppose taste is subjective and we can't all like the same thing. On this occasion I wasn't just on a different page to the judges, I was in a different library!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 21/01/2017 15:55

Looking at that link, I don't think I found the right tiles - Oliver's seem to have a rippled effect. I wonder if there is anywhere that tells you where to buy the stuff they used?

Cocolepew · 21/01/2017 16:59

Maybe tweet him or ask on his instagram page?

hollyisalovelyname · 21/01/2017 18:17

I really disliked Daniella's drawing room in the castle apartment- that white monstrosity of a 'fireplace'- in a castle!!!!

littlemissneela · 21/01/2017 18:38

Cocolepew

I have messaged him on Instagram. He has seen the message, but not replied wails
