Had a look but couldn't see another thread.

Anyone else watched any? Just seen the first episode and can't make my mind up. I'm ambivalent towards the monarchy but the production seems sumptuous. It's nice seeing all the 40's/50's fashions though.

I'm on episode 7, only started watching yesterday!!

The casting is AMAZING, even the little girl who plays a young Elizabeth is totally believable!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 07/11/2016 14:10

And Clare Foy only had a baby 4 months previously!

... Mountbatten is hardly English sounding!

It used to be Battenberg.

EverySongbirdSays · 07/11/2016 17:51

I want more now too.

Mountbatten was Emma Thompsons husband

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 07/11/2016 17:57

I missed the BJ reference- what was it?

diddl · 07/11/2016 17:57

Yes, Mountbatten is a translation of it.

I wonder how true the characterisations are.

Philip strikes me as silly & petulant!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 07/11/2016 18:03

They glossed over his philandering!

CongresswomanCaveMum · 07/11/2016 18:04

I think everything seen "in public" is accurate but as far as conversations go most of them will be "best guess".

I don't think that they had to get permission to make the series, but suspect that by the time they get round to series 6 there's a strong chance the main protagonists may no longer be with us.

SenecaFalls · 07/11/2016 19:18

If Edward had decided not to abdicate, then he would have given up on the idea of marrying Wallis. He would perhaps then married someone else and had children, one of whom would have succeeded him. And maybe also, by staying in Britain and being king during the war, his pro-Nazi leanings would have been significantly diminished.

What is known is that Bertie did not want to be king and took it on with great trepidation. There are also indications that Elizabeth was not too happy with the prospect of becoming queen, either.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 07/11/2016 19:26

Regarding royal permission or endorsement, someone upthread said that the production team specifically made the decision not to consult with the palace - they didn't want to be beholden to the official party line on things.

I'm paraphrasing and whoever said it upthread explained it a lot better than me!!

PoisonWitch · 07/11/2016 19:52

It's very good. The only bit that has made me Hmm so far was the bit when she is chewing out Churchill. She says "my age and gender". I'm pretty sure the word gender hadn't been invented at that time and was pretty niche academic speak until the 80s/90s. She would certainly have said sex.

sassymuffin · 07/11/2016 20:01

Just finished watching the series and absolutely loved it. I kept pausing and googling different people so probably took twice as long to watch as normal. Cant wait for the next series.

EverySongbirdSays · 07/11/2016 20:02

I think that they haven't glossed over Phil's philandering, I think they've dropped "the hint of it" for Season 2 - as I think the philandering at its height, was later.

I'm AMAZED they've brought "Porchy" into it and am wondering whether they will suggest a bit of Hows Your Father.....Andrew? in series 2

SenecaFalls · 07/11/2016 20:34

She would certainly have said sex.

I thought the very same thing. And also that I doubt that Churchill wore a wedding ring. I don't think it was the done thing for aristocratic men, especially during his day.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 07/11/2016 20:53

No it wasn't, they wore a signet ring.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 07/11/2016 20:53

Apparently, Churchill wore his signet ring on his ring finger...

SenecaFalls · 07/11/2016 21:01

Interesting article. But in The Crown, he wears a signet ring on his right hand and a wedding ring on his left.

raisedbyguineapigs · 07/11/2016 22:35

Philips biographer did an article in the Times confirming the name and the Clarence House thing. The family could have stayed Mountbatten until Dickie had the dinner party. Wasn't the RF Saxe Coburg Gotha until world war 1 as Victoria took Prince Albert's surname? So there was a precedent and I suppose it would be fair enough that Philip would expect the same. I'm trying drag this out by watching a couple of episodes a night but everyone else is binge watching and is reviewing the whole thing Angry

SenecaFalls · 07/11/2016 22:51

The Mountbatten thing is especially interesting because, in essence, it was Philip's mother's name. She was Princess Alice of Battenberg. Philip's name was actually Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg, the Danish royal house that became kings of Greece. So Philip had a hissy fit about his own children having their mother's name, when he had essentially done the same.

SenecaFalls · 07/11/2016 23:01

Philip could have taken the Windsor name. His mother was born in Windsor Castle so there is that connection. Why should a queen regnant have her royal house extinguished because she marries? More recently, for example, Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden's husband Prince Daniel has taken her name and become a Bernadotte.
