The Crown on Netflix

Had a look but couldn't see another thread.

Anyone else watched any? Just seen the first episode and can't make my mind up. I'm ambivalent towards the monarchy but the production seems sumptuous. It's nice seeing all the 40's/50's fashions though.

Apparently it was the most expense series Netflix have yet to make! I will def be watching it.
Netflix has some awesome series.
House of cards - like OMG !

TheHiphopopotamus · 05/11/2016 14:58

Ah, ok thanks. I knew it was something like that. Now you've mentioned it, it does ring a bell.

I love Clare Foy as the Queen. She always excellent in whatever she's in.

DH and I loved the first two episodes we watched last night - we bought some Thorntons today for tonight's binge!

Really impressed with Matt Smith. They seem to be auggesting that Philip's habit of saying stoopid stuff is basically his attempts at deflecting attention away from elizabeth whenever she felt uncomfortable and out of her depth. That really shows an interesting side of his character - that the buffoonery is really all an act!

I'm a bit upset they didnt cover the war years tho.

southeastdweller · 05/11/2016 15:42

I've only watched one episode so far but will watch more tonight. Please can someone tell me what episodes the Christmas scenes are in?

EverySongbirdSays · 05/11/2016 15:53

It was Episode 2 wasn't it? Or three let me think

1.Something Splash

  1. Hyde Park Corner
3.Windsor 4.Act of God

Yes, Hyde Park Corner

SenecaFalls · 05/11/2016 16:11

I have found myself thinking "couldn't they have got someone British to play Churchill" though. That might sound a bit pompous but I'd have felt the same if they'd had an American play any other main role.

Oh, come on now. We Americans didn't have a problem with a British actor playing Abraham Lincoln. Besides Churchill was half-American. Smile

raisedbyguineapigs · 05/11/2016 16:16

I've only seen ClareFoy in Wolf Hall before this. She was very good. I keep thinking of her head in that basket Shock but she seemed like a right laugh on Graham Norton.

BillStickersIsInnocent · 05/11/2016 16:20

She was awesome as Anne Boleyn.

Someone asked upthread whether the palace were involved at all - apparently not. 2.5 years of research but no official contact whatsoever.

EverySongbirdSays · 05/11/2016 16:20

I guess, Lincoln is one of the American ICONS like Churchill is ours.

Are you sure though?

Are you sure there weren't loads of actors muttering

WELL, I'D HAVE LIKED TO HAVE PLAYED LINCOLN IN A SPIELBERG FILM BUT NO FUCKER ASKED ME, GIVEN IT TO SOME FUCKING LIMEY"

Grin
BillStickersIsInnocent · 05/11/2016 16:23

Meg re swear words there's a cunt in a limerick very early in first episode.

EverySongbirdSays · 05/11/2016 16:24

Claire Foy also brilliant in Little Dorrit

She was in The Night Watch too

TheHiphopopotamus · 05/11/2016 16:25

I don't mind John Lithgow as Churchill. Makes a change from Robert Hardy tbh, who seems to have cornered the market in playing Churchill in the same way Simon Callow has with Dickens.

We might watch this tonight. Noticed it has a 15 rating - any views on whether it is ok for a ten year old? I usually pre-watch but haven't had time.

EverySongbirdSays · 05/11/2016 16:28

Bill

YES!

And the fact that I've only just twigged that now illustrates my problem that all swears pass me by.

All Netflix tends to have swears because it can, I don't even know if the new Gilmore Girls will have swears, the old one emphatically did not but was intentinally a "Family Show"

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 05/11/2016 16:29

Haven't read the thread as don't want any spoilers but MIL emailed to say she has watched it and loves it, thinks it's "the new Downtown".

I'm looking forward to it!

EverySongbirdSays · 05/11/2016 16:30

Catherine as pointed out the word Cunt comes about 5 minutes in.

SenecaFalls · 05/11/2016 16:57

Ha, no doubt. But we do have somewhat of a tradition of British actors playing famous Americans. The most recent, I think, is David Oyelowo as Martin Luther King.

And then there's Alan Rickman as Ronald Reagan, James Cromwell as George Bush (the first), Anthony Hopkins as Richard Nixon, Anthony Hopkins as John Qhincy Adams, Michael Gambon as Lyndon Johnson, and so on.

raisedbyguineapigs · 05/11/2016 17:12

Apparently they refused Palace involvement because they didn't want to be influenced by the Royal PR machine, so wanted to be completely independent. I'm itching to see it! I might insist tonight after Strictly Grin

EverySongbirdSays · 05/11/2016 17:19

whispers

Could it be because British actors have more gravitas?

whistles

Also, I thought James Cromwell was Aussie, because of Babe Grin

EverySongbirdSays · 05/11/2016 17:22

I remember seeing on the Golden Globes a US actor, can't remember which, following Hugh Laurie's acceptance speech and saying

"American actors can't even accept an award as well as a British actor can, man" Grin I wish I could remember the full thing.

SenecaFalls · 05/11/2016 17:24

Oops, I was wrong about James Cromwell. He's American. And he played Prince Philip in The Queen.

MegCleary · 05/11/2016 17:39

Thanks for the info it doesn't sound suitable, I'm going to start it myself tonight and see what i think.

FormerlyCatherineDeB · 05/11/2016 20:10

Right we have made it past the first five mins which went unnoticed thanks to lego, anything else to worry about?

raisedbyguineapigs · 05/11/2016 21:25

Well I managed to sneak the first episode in! It's incredibly compelling, isn't it? for Gods sake George vi died 64 years ago, but the actor just filled me with dread every time he came on screen. I wanted to shout 'Don't smoke!' He was brilliant and tragic at the same time.
The acting all round is top notch. I'm surprised at the route they seem to be taking Philip. I knew Elizabeth adored him and fought to marry him against all opposition, but they have really done the contrast well between him and her. I love the politics bit. It's what I wanted 'Victoria' to be.

Oscha · 05/11/2016 21:46

I'm on the last episode. I've loved it!
