Had a look but couldn't see another thread.

Anyone else watched any? Just seen the first episode and can't make my mind up. I'm ambivalent towards the monarchy but the production seems sumptuous. It's nice seeing all the 40's/50's fashions though.

I've watched episodes 1-5 since yesterday. It's compelling viewing, great acting and beautifully filmed. Now unsure whether to watch the remaining five episodes over the next couple of days and then be lost when I've finshed them, or save them to be savoured over a week or so. GrinGrin

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 05/11/2016 22:10

DMum and I watched the first 2 episodes this afternoon. Extremely impressed with production values and CF's cut glass accent! I have no idea what she sounds like in real life though!

can't wait to watch more.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 05/11/2016 22:12

I did want to see a bit more of the wedding though.

I'm loving John Lithgow as Churchill. And Mrs C is Fanny from Sense & Sensibility is she not? Brilliant cast.

raisedbyguineapigs · 05/11/2016 22:13

The only reason I'm not binge watching is because my DH has refused to watch a programme about the RF, no matter the reviews and then moaned about being stuck in another room while i watched the first episode Grin Im kind of glad because it feels like something I would want to savour over a few weeks

SenecaFalls · 05/11/2016 22:22

I just watched the first two episodes. Agree that the production values are very high and the acting excellent. What a treat especially to see Harriet Walter; she is one of my all time favorites.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 05/11/2016 22:28

Harriet Walter, that's her.

Yoksha · 05/11/2016 23:11

This is a-ma-zing.! Brilliant. Compelling.

blowmybarnacles · 05/11/2016 23:44

It has to be, without doubt, one of my most favorite watches this year.

I'm googling as I watch information about people, had no idea Peter Townsend was an Equerry. The history, the fashion, I'm just loving it. The production values are out of this world, and I'm appreciating every moment. Fantastic acting....I could go on!

I'm getting why there was big gap between Anne, Charles and Edward who came later.

EverySongbirdSays · 06/11/2016 00:52

I am LOVING this too

I feel so sorry for Prince Phil and I really see now what sacrifices he made

I'm watching Episode 7 and I so feel for The Queen bullied around by men forcing her to do things their way, not telling her stuff and the fact that she was the heir but wasn't given the education a male heir would have been.

raisedbyguineapigs · 06/11/2016 09:08

barnacles Have you fought the good fight and airbrushed Andrew out of history?Grin

I agree re Philip. I think this is going to be a pr triumph for him (the real one) The Queens one act of defiance was marrying him and he gave up so much to marry her. It's a proper love story. His early life is apparently fascinating. I might look it up.

TheHiphopopotamus · 06/11/2016 09:19

Still on Ep 2. I can't believe that they didn't prepare Elizabeth more for her fathers death or prep her as to what would happen when it did.

Fabulous cast though. Warming to MS as Philip a bit more too.

Loving this - currently half way through episode 3 and had to pop in to say that Matt Smith is mesmerising as Prince Phillip.

raisedbyguineapigs · 06/11/2016 10:21

I love Matt Smith anyway as an actor, but I blushed at the bit in episode 1 when he was talking to Elizabeth before their wedding and then he kissed her Blush. Him and Clare Got play off each other so well.

raisedbyguineapigs · 06/11/2016 10:22

Clare Foy!!!!

blodynmawr · 06/11/2016 12:11

Great series. Have got to ep 3.
I have read various royal biographies since the Kings Speech first piqued my interest and the historical accuracy is great. Not surprising given who is acting and producing. Agree that Matt Smith and Claire Foy are good but Dame Eileen as Queen Mary is my favourite. Each scene she appears in is totally hers and she so trumps Dame Maggie when it comes to playing formidable old matriarchs.
Trying to decide whether to binge watch the rest of the series today or spread them out over the week to savour each one!

southeastdweller · 06/11/2016 12:45

I've watched the first four and will get through the rest next week. It's very easily the best TV show I've seen so far this year, along with Happy Valley.

I wonder if there'll be any hints about Philip's alleged philandering?

PikachuSayBoo · 06/11/2016 13:05

When they quote from letters from the abdicated king to wallis simpson are those letters he actually wrote word for word? Calling the royal family a tawdry rabble, etc? Or are they making it up?

TheHiphopopotamus · 06/11/2016 13:09

Dame Eileen as Queen Mary is my favourite

I agree, but all the female cast have been excellent so far, especially the woman who plays Mrs Churchill & the one playing the Queen Mother , although it took me a while to work out who she was as I always imagine the Queen mum with a brummie accent (thanks Spitting Image! Confused)

SenecaFalls · 06/11/2016 13:26

Philip's life story is very interesting. So his is mother's, Princess Alice, who was a remarkable woman. She was honored after her death as one of the Righteous Among the Nations at Yad Vashem in Israel for hiding a Jewish family from the Nazis during the war.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 06/11/2016 14:57

Watching it now, will report back afterwards!

daisiesinherfootsteps · 06/11/2016 15:00

On episode 8 already after binge watching. Excellent show, beautiful to watch and fascinating how the characters are portrayed.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 06/11/2016 15:09

Blimey, everyone's in it!

blodynmawr · 06/11/2016 15:43

Pikachu some of the script is word for word accurate based on the biographies I've read that quoted the Duke of Windsor letters e.g. referring to the Queen, the Queen Mother and Queen Mary as 'ice veined bitches'.

PikachuSayBoo · 06/11/2016 16:02

Thanks blodyn. I did wonder if the letters had being kept and were a matter of public knowledge.

daisiesinherfootsteps · 06/11/2016 16:02

Spoiler alert. (If it can be called that in an accurate historical drama?) southeastdweller definite hints of philandering by halfway into episode 9...
