Because we can't wait until next year for season 3. Highbrow discussion of Jamie's knees, hair and anything else Outlander

Done a great job so far so I’m going to trust them.
Thinking about the carriage ride isn’t that where she met the deviant preacher? I wonder if they are going to cut out that sub plot. They could do away with the whole wearing a crocodile head and tripping in the jungle bit too then (good!)

JuneFromBethesda · 11/10/2017 19:26

Already pissed off waiting for ep6, and it's only wednesday

Me too Sad

SenecaFalls · 11/10/2017 19:28

Which caracter did the guy cast for Bonnet play?

Jimmy the footman.

GreatWhites · 11/10/2017 19:32

I could never get the point of his sister Margaret either. Kept thinking her and Jamie were going to turn out to have been together at some point.

LonelyOversharer · 11/10/2017 20:01

Oh god, that was such a shit and pointless sub plot. I hope they've just lopped all that bit out!

pixieg1rl · 11/10/2017 21:03

AKA Roger on the doorstep in Boston really reminded me of a Womble.**

susurration · 12/10/2017 00:30

I'm a bit bemused at Maria Doyle Kennedy being Jocasta. Not how I picture her at all. I've always thought of her as more like a taller Helen Mirren, or perhaps Maggie Smith 10 years ago.

quirkychick · 12/10/2017 07:03

I thought of Jocasta like a younger Vanessa Redgrave, quite spiky Grin.

I think she meets the deviant preacher in the apothecary buying herbs (currently re-reading) but quite a bit of plot could be cut out.

Those criticising DG for her time lines and geography, at the end of Written in my Own Heart's Blood, I think, there's an author's note where she admits she's pretty crap at geography and keeping track of character's ages. I think you just have to take it at face value and follow the plot, but not analyse too much.

SeveredPixieBits · 12/10/2017 09:11

Yy to Vanessa Redgrave. I've been wracking my brains as to who would match up to the Jocasta in my mind and she is the closest so far.
That said, Maria Doyle Kennedy was unrecognizable and brilliant as Katherine of Aragon so I reckon she will be able to pull this off beautifully.

quirkychick · 12/10/2017 10:33

Dp and I saw Vanessa Redgrave speak at a literary event a year or so ago, very sharp but quite... erm difficult independent of thought! Fantastic actress, though, and very interesting what she said about the acting process and making lines your own.

Maria Doyle Kennedy was excellent as Katherine of Aragon, I agree. I'm sure she'll be great.

Lessstressedhemum · 12/10/2017 10:39

I don't know the man who will play Bonnet at all, but Maria Doyle Kennedy is brilliant. Not quite how I pictured \Jocasta but I'm sure she will do a great job. As long as she can do a Scottish accent.

See, I didn't mind the minister subplot. I think it's another identity thing. He isn't who he seems to be, either. And Margaret has no identity any more, that's why she is a perfect conduit for the tribal spirits.

All these subplots are tied up with identity struggles so they just kind of reinforce Jamie and Claire's own journeys to find themselves again in each other. OOOH, aren't I deep this morningGrin

quirkychick · 12/10/2017 11:01

I also thought the subplot with Margaret was to highlight the lasting damage of Culloden on those left behind. Hadn't her sweetheart been one of the men shot by Lord Melton's men?

Lessstressed I do like idea of identities, Jamie and Claire end up with lots of names: Jamie Roy, Alexander Malcolm, Dr Randall, Mrs Fraser... trying to find out who they are.

Lessstressedhemum · 12/10/2017 11:09

Aye, I think so, quirky. Margaret's story highlights the whole aftermath of Culloden and the damage done to everyone. The Highlands were cleared and the people stripped of their identity. The Highlands were left an empty shell, just like Margaret and the way of life and the culture never really recovered. So, as well as being a character in her own right, she is a kind of metaphor for what happened in Scotland after the Rising.

quirkychick · 12/10/2017 11:16

Lessstressed you've said it much more eloquently than me.

LonelyOversharer · 12/10/2017 17:37

Wow, I can see it now you've said it lessstressed but the whole speaking in tongues and Margaret talking to Claire in Bree's voice was a bit woo for me. Plus all the biting the cockerel (was it a cockerel or a goat? Luckily can't remember) and drinking its blood like she was having a nice cup of tea was a bit weird frankly! And makes me wonder how Claire gets constantly mixed up in all the nonsense.

I wonder if DG meant it to be a metaphor, or if it was a happy accident!

I suppose they (mad reverand and Margaret) must be in it, as it's when Mr Willoughby saves the day and escapes. There'd be no point having him in it if they don't finish his plot line off. Hoping there is no dodgy foot sex, surely theres not enough time for all of that guff.

The guy playing Bonnet is a bit of a beautiful boy, they'll have to rough him up a bit.

AKAmyself · 12/10/2017 17:55

I had forgotten the whole crazy subplot! Don't think I'm going to enjoy the latter part of the season apart from all the shagging

ToniMumsnet · 12/10/2017 19:52

Yes, we have the murder at the Governers welcome party to look forward to. With Jamie dressed as a French dandy and putting on an accent.

snozzlemaid · 12/10/2017 20:05

God I’ve forgotten so much of the stories from the later books. Can’t remember much of what you’re all talking about.

SeveredPixieBits · 12/10/2017 21:58

Once Jamie and Claire have had a catch up and a decent shag I'm basically just waiting for series 4. The rest of 3 is bloody nonsense. Although actually I am looking forward to meeting Wee Ian. And seeing grown up Fergus.

LonelyOversharer · 12/10/2017 22:22

Actually the more I think about Voyager, the more batshit it seems. Repeat over and over: I trust the screenwriters!

quirkychick · 13/10/2017 07:08

Lonely they actually have a cargo of batshit on the boat at one point, do you think DG is making an ironic point? I hope a lot of the craziness on the boats translates onto the screen better than it does on the page. Sometimes lots of action can be hard to follow in print but is easier to watch, especially if they streamline it, which the screenwriters seem to do.

AKAmyself · 13/10/2017 07:08

This! I fear season 3 peaked with the Hellwater episode... been listening to a Hard Rain gonna fall on my commute and shedding a little tear for Jamie. That's totally normal yes?

AKAmyself · 13/10/2017 07:09

quirky I love your optimism:) also telling myself that it will b v hot on those boats and Jamie will have to be shirtless a lot #poldarkmoments

quirkychick · 13/10/2017 07:17

#poldarkmoments Grin

I might have to go back to reading the Poldark books, which I was reading before I switched to the Outlander books. I've been watching Black Sails and all that boat nonsense works well on screen, they've used the same boats too, I believe.

mateysmum · 13/10/2017 07:57

I've just finished reading Voyager and I agree that all that voodooy/chicken head stuff is weird and I don't think it fundamentally adds anything to the story. The whole Geillis black magic and woo is enough for me.
Why for once, can't Claire just stay in the safe place Jamie has left her in?
About to start on book 4. Can't wait.
