I also dip toast in tea Shock

Lulooo · 27/08/2016 00:12

Well, to be fair, I wouldn't even have jaffa cakes with tea. I'd have hob nobs or malted milk. Jaffas are better eaten on their own.

FoxesOnSocks · 27/08/2016 05:55

They really should have been told to make fig rolls, imagine that; they weren't able to figure out which side the jelly went on a Jaffa think of the confusion how to get the fig in a fig roll would cause.

Am I right in thinking that filming for this series will have finished now?

They film it at weekends don't they as the contestants have normal jobs. Mary berry normally comes to the Chatsworth show which is always the first weekend in September. So I assume they must have finished filming or she wouldn't be able to come.

They do a good job of keeping the name of the winner from being leaked if I'm right.

Roussette · 27/08/2016 08:05

Yes filming has finished, winner is chosen etc. They film the series not a million miles away from me and owner of the huge house and grounds was interviewed. She has signed a secrecy thing as it's all over now.

She did say that she so so enjoys everything, all the filming, the cake eating (she puts on half a stone scoffing cake during every series) and what really tickled me was her saying she doesn't stop laughing for the whole six weeks and that Mel 'n Sue are absolutely hilarious, she loves it when it all starts an it sounds like she wanders around with the film crew watching and eating.

MiddleClassProblem · 27/08/2016 09:04

I wonder if they do it before it airs do social media can't get in the contestants heads. Comments positive or negative changing how they are on camera etc

CrotchetQuaverMinim · 27/08/2016 09:13

I know they all have to sign secrecy agreements, but it still amazing that they can keep the secrets - their whole families know as they all come to the final party, even the children, and it must be so tempting to let something slip, or even accidentally, with children just talking about their summer and something that gives it away comes out without them realising.

MiddleClassProblem · 27/08/2016 10:27

Yeah,Crotchet it is a wonder

SoupDragon · 27/08/2016 10:51

I remember Nadiya talking about it last year. She hid the trophy in a suitcase under a bed and was waiting for her children to tell someone. I think she was amazed they didn't slip up!

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 27/08/2016 12:10

DSis is going to An Extra Slice this weekend - I'm very jealous!

I sat there and knew (smugly) that they'd never get the criss-cross right on the Jaffa cakes. It's done with cold air. So the cake comes along and a machine puts a splodge of jelly on, then they go along a conveyor belt and at the the end they're tipped so they turn over onto a shorter conveyor belt of chocolate. They go along that, then tip over again (so they're the right way up) and there's a blast of freezing cold air to set the chocolate and make the pattern.

Lulooo · 27/08/2016 12:15

Just seen Lee's bake of Extra Slice and it looks quite shite. A mirror glaze cake without a mirror glaze and a surprise that just turns out to be a strawberry encased in thick chocolate? Pfft! Judging from what he's shown so far, I don't think he's anywhere near one of the 12 best amateur bakers in the country.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 27/08/2016 12:35

Raaah, you're mum's mince pies sound amazing. (Also are you from the NW? I never see the word mithered on here!)

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 27/08/2016 12:35

*your mum's

Raahh · 27/08/2016 13:43

Polka- they are lovely, melt in the mouth. Make a nice change from all pastry.

And yes, Grin I am from Manchester, always being mithered around here!Grin

RepentAtLeisure · 27/08/2016 14:29

I'm surprised some people think Selasi was robbed of star baker.

I rewatched it, and Jane's two cakes were at least as nice as his, plus he forgot an ingredient and was helped by another contestant which of course is fine, but he didn't credit her when they praised him which to me seemed very Male Entitlement 101...

JinkxMonsoon · 27/08/2016 15:00

Why is Selasi getting so much grief over not confessing that the cinnamon glaze wasn't his idea? If I was him, I wouldn't have said anything either. Not because I'd want to deny Candice (sp?) any praise, but because I wouldn't want the judges to know that I nearly fucked up Grin

PurpleDaisies · 27/08/2016 15:01

Also, we don't know how it's been edited. It's entirely possible his confession ended up not being shown.

ElspethFlashman · 27/08/2016 15:03

Yeah I'm not sure he wouldn't have just done that anyway tbh. And he got praise for the rest of it so it's not like "Candice saved Selasi" or anything. From what we saw, so far he's a better baker than her anyway.

Donatellalymanmoss · 27/08/2016 15:35

Well he thanked her for it that's the main thing. The bakers are always helping each other out, you see it every series, this is just a bit of fancy editing to make it more interesting viewing.

Oblomov16 · 27/08/2016 16:27

Really enjoyed episode 1. Forgotten how much I enjoyed this programme.

Oblomov16 · 27/08/2016 16:36

And enjoyed Jo Brand enormously.

MiddleClassProblem · 27/08/2016 16:49

It's not like he stole her custard Grin

SoupDragon · 27/08/2016 17:47

which to me seemed very Male Entitlement 101...

Seriously?!

StopLaughingDrRoss · 28/08/2016 22:56

Ah - my people!

Had to watch late due to being away (and iplayer not working!!) but I really liked Selasi and Candice. . I just wanted to hug her at the end when she thought she'd gone home (will admit to being a bit of a sucker for waterworks). And Selasi was very sweet to her - definitely my two current favourites. Liked Benjamina too - although she had a major wobble as well.. perhaps that's why Smile

I really didn't like Kate with her fake 'throwing flour, aren't I a cool mummy, here on my farm, hardy har!'... Argh, took against her straight away! And poor Lee seemed completely out of his depth.

I also dislike Jaffa Cakes - ugh, why WHY! - but do like a dunk, not Jaffa Cakes though for obvious reasons!

I absolutely love the gingerbread erections so very much so next week is going to be fabulous.. I may have to bake something!!
