Really late in here but Selsai annoyed me because of the 'I'm so laid back' shite. (I take exception to anything self proclaimed) - yes I got wound up at laid backness Grin - but there he appears to be a decent baker (not my fav though). I like Benjamina. Also Rav, and the other people whose names I don't recall more.

Off the check Trills's link to get names.

TheNorthWestPawsage · 24/08/2016 22:26

Had to watch on catch up as I was out earlier. I actually like Candice (but not wild about the lipstick). My favs so far are Selasi - a natural talent I think and Benjamina. The young student guy is trying too hard with his gin, kitsch and matcha tea flavours. The right person went and I was surprised Val (ex head teacher?) was so disorganised!

Unicornsarelovely · 24/08/2016 22:28

Watched it with my sister so forgot the whole live blog chat thing!

We liked Benjamina, Selasi, Andrew, Tom,Michael and Jane.

We did not like Candice, although she improved - the lipstick is horrible. We really did not like Swallow woman as she sounded like our old RE teacher who would be all sweet and lovely when other people were around, and then pinch really hard if she was annoyedShock. Kind of umbridge.

Also her throwing the flour round her kitchen irritated me, as the DCs have been baking today and I've just had to clean it up, don't give them more ideas about throwing flour.

I like structural biscuits (DHs baking speciality) so that will be one to watch next week. His gingerbread Death Star made £40 at the last school fete...

Dozer · 24/08/2016 22:29

Selasi will lose his swagger at some point, bake off seems to do that to people!

AnnieNoMouse · 24/08/2016 22:33

Star baker lady reminded me of Hayley from Coronation St.
I thought the blue cake would have been perfect for a Frozen party.

FoxesOnSocks · 24/08/2016 22:38

I would laugh if he went batshit about something like a sugar paste rose.

dementedma · 24/08/2016 22:40

I don't think Selasi had a swagger. He was nice to all the others

squoosh · 24/08/2016 22:41

I liked the raspberry moussey part of Selasi's cake. It just needed more height.

JinkxMonsoon · 24/08/2016 22:53

Ooh, did anyone read Holly Bell's blog/FAQ about Bake Off? She mentioned that she is most definitely not friends with everyone from her "year" (2011), and some people were a lot nicer in the edit than IRL.

I love a bit of dirt Grin

Actually, Holly must surely be a Mumsnetter. Hi Holly Wine

There's the link.

squoosh · 24/08/2016 22:57

Holly wasn't one of my faves............

MrsWooster · 24/08/2016 23:05

Pound to a penny that Kate is at the wind up: "I like the taste of cox" AND "I love the swallows" (may be exaggerating slightly but I'm pretty sure those were both her).
We are watching you, lady!

MiddleClassProblem · 24/08/2016 23:13

I don't remember Holly Blush

ManagersDilemma · 24/08/2016 23:25

I went to university with Andrew. He is a lovely person and very humble, despite being extremely clever. I honestly can't remember anyone ever disliking him or having a bad word to say about him. I haven't watched this programme before (!) but can't wait to see how he gets on.

NoelHeadbands · 24/08/2016 23:26

Late to the party tonight, but caught up now.

So far, I think highly of Selasi...

Highly...Selasi...geddit? See what I did there?

Actually, I'm not sure about him, I just said that to make that joke. Too early for me to say.

Agree with the poster who said that they cross stuff off their 'to do' lists on the back of this programme- I never ever want to eat mirror cake and neither do my teeth.

MadisonAvenue · 24/08/2016 23:29

Really liked Andrew, Jane, Rav and Benjamina. Didn't like Candice (that lipstick!!) and Selasi.

NapQueen · 24/08/2016 23:40

Kate has pampas grass and a marvellous glass bowl. Deffo.

I didn't mind Candice especially after the orange quip.

Salasi I like, I don't feel he is smug yet. Benjamina is also my favourite and my favourite cake this week was her drizzle cake.

shits pants as I admit I'm just not a fan of Mel and Sue's jokes. Interviewing fine. Patter not fine.

JinkxMonsoon · 24/08/2016 23:45

Also looking forward to the Monkseal write up. Love them nearly as much as the show itself.

Was it just me, I'm sure it probably was, that was totally distracted by the purple work areas, do they normally have purple, I thought they had pink with the blue and then green or cream. More importantly why on earth did I find that so distracting?

dailymaillazyjournos · 25/08/2016 00:09

Had to watch on catch up. Sooooo good it's back. I was surprised how much so many of them struggled and had to re-do stuff. Wonder if it was nerves with it being the first one.

The Matcha tea cake looked the contents of a particularly gruesome nappy while it was still in the bowl. And not much more aesthetic at completion. And a cake that tastes of grass sounds grim.

The round orange cake reminded me of Zippy from Rainbow's head. Something about it not meeting up all the way round, reminded me of Zippy with his gob open.

Blue cake = grim. But lucky for her it tasted good.

Andrew's cake looked amazing bless him. Really hope he does better in the first two rounds next week. He seems a sweetheart. I liked Benjamina and Dev and didn't pick up a smug vibe from Selasi. Just think he might be genuinely really really laid back. Didn't mind Candace either apart from her dodgy taste in lipstick. But Ioved her reply to Sue when she asked her where she got the orange juice from Smile. Felt sorry for poor Lee but am not sure how he got onto the show as he really seemed so far behind the others in ability and knowledge. Here's to next week. Sounds a good un.

Igneococcus · 25/08/2016 06:48

Green tea ice cream is one of my favourite ice cream flavours so I expected the matcha cakre to be nice but that looked like way too much matcha for it to work.
Rav, Selasi, Benjamina and Andrew are favourites in our house at the moment.
Also don't care for jaffa cakes either, I'm also not a Brit, I wonder if there is a big Jaffa cake divide between countries.

user7755 · 25/08/2016 06:54

Why don't they have a freezer each?

Favourites so far Benjamina. Selasi, Rav.

Did anyone else get deep penetration for innuendo bingo?

Roussette · 25/08/2016 06:57

On pondering.... I've realised to myself that Candice's lipstick is like Queen of Hearts fancy dress (helena bonham carter/alice in wonderland type thing). Let's hope she doesn't wear it every episode, I find it distracting Grin

FoxesOnSocks · 25/08/2016 07:00

I don't think Selasi is smug either. I just found the 'I'm so laid back me' thing irritating (it's like when someone declares 'I'm mad me!!'). Which is why it would make me giggle if he lost it over a sugar paste rose (or a butterfly). Though he is good from the look of it. Lots of them appear not to be though.

I've never actually managed to see the first few episodes of bake off but is the lack of brilliance normal? Is it first appearance nerves?

I've watched the first few episodes of the Irish Bake Off a few times and the level of talent was so poor I gave up not that I can bake

I'm hoping the standard in this one hadn't dropped!!

MiddleClassProblem · 25/08/2016 07:06

It always starts a bit like this but unusual to see so many people restarting things in one ep. You often have someone horrendous in round one that nerves or skill go to pot and they cock up each round to an extremely obvious degree but no one was that awful.

The freezer thing pisses me off! I don't understand why they haven't learnt from the melty ice cream incident but maybe they think it adds to the drama
