But 'soapy and sensationalist' is what gets us reading.
Let's face it, just reading the facts is boring.
The made up dialogue is 'everything'

EverySongbirdSays · 17/06/2016 20:57

The books DO go on a bit I entirely agree

BUT if you're a mad fan of the show and just want more, it makes no sense not to read the book because there's so much more there

OP posts:
WeDoNotSow · 17/06/2016 20:57

And words are wind

NeedACleverNN · 17/06/2016 21:01

I read the first book but I just couldn't get into the second.

If you were to look up mansplaining in the dictionary you would see the pictures of these books

AliceInHinterland · 17/06/2016 21:03

I read to get ahead of the show but that's not possible any more - we are all in the same frustrating boat of not knowing where this is all heading (and living in fear of a rubbish ending).
Some show lovers did not want to spoil the show though - understandable I suppose?

AliceInHinterland · 17/06/2016 21:04

Interesting comment Need - care to elaborate?

EverySongbirdSays · 17/06/2016 21:05

I am quite militant that the book is the superior medium. One of the kids said that once about Harry Potter and I nearly collapsed

Noo
Not while 50 shades is in print

But, seriously, I do completely disagree

SolomanDaisy · 17/06/2016 21:10

I see the books and the show as related, but not really the same any more. I read the books before I saw any of the show and thought the show couldn't be as good. But it is, it's just different.

EverySongbirdSays · 17/06/2016 21:10

Yeah, not to "gang up" but I don't really understand how/what it's mansplaining

The scary thing is TWO women wrote 50 shades, given that of itself its a Twilight fan fiction.

OP posts:
WeDoNotSow · 17/06/2016 21:20

I know Every

I also tend to find books the superior medium in pretty much all cases!

AintNobodyHereButUsKittens · 17/06/2016 21:21

My name is Kittens, and I honestly loved the Kingsmoot. I have a thing for the Iron Islands and their icky religion and am delighted to see them getting some screen time. Bran's chapters OTOH recieved some very perfunctory flick throughs.

I kind of get the mansplaining point - the bits where Cersei/Brienne goes on about how tough it is being a woman in a man's world are slightly overdone.

NeedACleverNN · 17/06/2016 21:26

It just seems to go on and on and on about the same thing without getting to the point.

For example

"The Starks gathered round the tree.
Now the trees are important to the Starks as they are part of their gods. Trees provide oxygen which could be why they chose the tree and on and on and on it goes until it finishes with, the Starks gathered round the tree to say the lannisters were visiting"

It was unnecessary. I love reading.
It is one of my favourite past times but those books were just not enjoyable to read

AliceInHinterland · 17/06/2016 21:27

I do remember feeling uncomfortable with some of the sections of the book and thinking that actually maybe this guy does not really get women, but it was ages ago so I couldn't quote anything. I know it's meant to be mediaeval but some stuff was definitely gratuitous.
Maybe I will re-read and come back with some really well thought out points!

Felascloak · 17/06/2016 21:27

need Grin Grin
I read all the ones published in 2004 but got mightily confused that everyone was related and had nicknames so I was never quite sure who was who (outside the narrators). Then there was a huge gap to the next book and I just couldn't be bothered to reread them to try to remember wtf was going on. The TV shows are better. At least most of them keep the same face. And there are fewer characters.
I might try to read them again.
Anyone else here read any other fantasy books? Generally I love them. Always happy to find fantasy fans.
I like historical fiction too but Philippa Gregory is not my favourite. Especially not the recent ones. I don't really like the supernatural aspects. Might try Conn Iggulden.

AliceInHinterland · 17/06/2016 21:29

Oh Need I see what you mean - like he loves the sound of his own voice a bit too much? Yeah there is that. (she says, her own screen showing a bit too much pink this evening Blush)

NeedACleverNN · 17/06/2016 21:31

I read a lot of fantasy book

My new particular favourite is miss peregrines home for peculiar children by Ransom Biggs

boldlygoingsomewhere · 17/06/2016 21:31

I read a bit of fantasy - the other series which grabbed me and I would love to see adapted is Robin Hobb's Farseer/Fitz and the Fool.

EverySongbirdSays · 17/06/2016 21:35

(Hoping that somebody else makes the pedant remark so I don't have to)

The last 2 Gregory's have been extremely weak, like she's bored of source she should move on and do Victoria and children I always wonder why no-one has as there's so much stuff there.

The problem with skimming Bran is that you miss stuff like him appearing to Theon in a tree

OP posts:
Felascloak · 17/06/2016 21:37

Robin Hobb is my absolute favourite! I'm obsessed with the fitz. To the point I'm struggling to read the latest ones in case he dies. Not sure how they could do nighteyes on TV though Grin. Would be great to see the liveship traders on TV I think.

EverySongbirdSays · 17/06/2016 21:38

Oooo I really want to read that Need.

The trailer looks very exciting and I'm a book first type.

Also I have taken a dim view of the last 3 book to screen adaptations Burton has done.

Couple of odd points here.

  1. Man carves head of Night King out of watermelon, as I'm sure we all do when we have an odd moment. Actually, it's an astoundingly good end result.
  1. Digital Spy says HBO is already starting to cast series 7. There's not much more to it than that, though.
NeedACleverNN · 17/06/2016 21:48

I've almost finished book 3 of the peregrine books and they are amazing.

Different but amazing

The whole story is based on real photo graphs he has found

CaitAgusMadra · 17/06/2016 21:51

I'm mid re-read. Loved the first 2 (again) and flew through them. Slowed down for book 3. Now starting book 4 and I'm getting a bit bogged down. It's slightly depressing that I still have approx 2000 pages to go and Tyrion still won't have met Dany....grrrr

RJnomore1 · 17/06/2016 21:52

I'm here to take objection to not being a fan because I've not read the books

I will read the books after the to series ends. I didn't know about them before tv and I've been sucked right in. If I read them now I'll get all annoyed about bits they've missed and changed and stop enjoying both.

But yeah you're right books are the superior medium.
